Black is NT, needs to stay there and earn his stripes . He has the chance to be a really good player.

Who has Karl Dunbar coached up? Benton is a player...he showed it his rookie year.

They aren't even coaching these guys to properly stop the run anymore...it is just "stop the run on the way to passer."

 

I'm not dismissing the performances of individual players, but this is as much a schematic issue as it is a players' issue. The Eagles and Ravens provided the blueprint and our opponents are going to try to replicate that blueprint. And the fact that we couldn't fix something this problematic over the summer doesn't give me much hope moving forward.

 

Cameron Heyward (Dunbar has been around 3 of four Heywards First Team All Pros and 4 of his 5 All Pros total).



It isn't a Karl Dunbar problem though. It is a combination of schematics, incorrect usage of personnel and poor drafting that has led to this problem. Even someone like Jeff Stoutland, one of the best Offensive Line Coaches in all of Football, cannot work miracles if he isn't given at least something to work with.


Yahya Black and Derrick Harmon are actual pieces, for the first time in a very long time, that Dunbar can work with. Problem is neither Teryl Austin nor Mike Tomlin want to accept that Keeanu Benton isn't what they want him to be. Furthermore, solely relying on the aforementioned Heyward isn't ideal either; further compounded by the fact that Harmon isn't available at the moment.

 

What's more damning is that, coming out of Wisconsin, Benton was one of the better leverage IDLs coming out of the 2023 Draft. He was fine at it as a Rookie but for whatever reason has regressed even in that area. Disappointing doesn't even describe it either.


The 2023 Class is shaping up to be quite bad sans the likes of Herbig and Washington.... and I honestly would only say Washington has been the most consistent of any of his classmates. Peezy Jr is injured but he was more so up and down as he was in 2024 against New York. Now he is out with an injury and who knows how long that will take?!

 

Said schematics fall on the Coaches; namely Teryl Austin.


Remember that he is the one who openly stated that they don't view Black as a NT. That said, one player, by himself, isn't the end all cure all. However, at some point in time, the team is going to have to go a different direction. This simply cannot continue.

 

This. And I honestly think they coached it out of him.

 

Mark my words, if they want to continue jamming out the 425 as the base, then this squad isn't going to make the playoffs. They're going to be mentally drained by October and the wheels will fall off. There's too much $$$ invested in talent to continue to jam square pegs into round holes.
