Being from Iowa, I was able to see this kid play a few times. He will make an impact for us. I know some where concerned about his "jumping" over players but take the highlight reel for what it is...a highlight. Unless he is brain-dead he will be starting over the two backs on our roster. Having said that, if Dwyer comes in with his A game it could make things interesting. Until Redman proves me wrong he is a non-factor.

Will La'veon be the next workhorse RB of the NFL? Is there some Franco in him, only to get better with time?

    We can only hope

It sounds like he could be the next workhorse because Haley said he's a guy you could give it to "30 times a game". When is the last time we seen that?

This just gave me flashbacks to Tomlin's "We will run the wheels off Willie Parker"... which turned out to be fateful prediction.

Anywya, back in the present - I'm liking this draft so far. Surely it must Safety in the 4th, though - who's still there?

Well hopefully Haley gets to use him as a true rb and not just a receiving threat. I would like to have a safety also but I noticed Haley saying something like "we weren't drafting according to need but taking the best player available" so who knows if we will get one or not. But at least we got some insight in to their mindset though. Sounds like not much has changed really.

We always draft best player available, always have, always will. A lot of the other successful teams do as well, such as GB, NYG, NE, Baltimore, etc. If you draft based on need, you're going to end up reaching all the time. A lot of GM's have their boards set and they don't deviate much, especially in the early rounds. Doesn't mean they don't place priorities on certain positions while still sticking true to their plan though. If there's no good safety worth picking when we're on the clock, Colbert won't draft one no matter how bad we need it.

Bell is growing on me. He is a big back who plays more like he is 205 lbs. He isn't a plodder, and certainly has some striking similarities to Jonathan Dwyer. Let's just hope he has better conditioning.

After watching alot of tape this morning, there certainly are some qualities of Bell's game which could make him a "special" running back.

If we truly take the BPA, we may be drafting a QB in the 4th.:hmmm:

Like Dallas did with the 3rd round center at the end of the 1st round.

Maybe, maybe not. Bell might have been the top guy remaining on their board

He's a big sturdy kid and despite that runs smooth and picks his lanes. The ball is securely tucked even as he accelerates through an opening. He's young with little tread ware even after chalking up 3000+ yds of green. To me, in my limited knowledge, he's a "from the hips" runner, Franco style and again, to me, that's the type that gets better with time and pro instruction. He has decent speed when he clears and is surprisingly agile in close contact. That agility is what is strange to view when you watched him play in school.

IDK, you get the feeling if he had a decent line/lead in front you may really have something here. Something, for the years, Durable and effective and we of course we'll take that. Also, you can run him, rinse repeat, over and over and it doesn't matter if it's up the middle or around.

The question mark is does he have enough speed and power to handle the NFL?

After watching multiple highlights of Bell, one thing jumps out, this guy has a wicked stiff arm. He's just constantly knocking guys on their ass. I hope he continues to develop it. I have no doubt that the conditioning coaches are gonna make him faster and stronger. Look how much different Redman looks now opposed to when he first came in.

After watching a few more MSU games, I am still trying to figure out what made our front office and coaches think that this kid is a 2nd round running back. He's a solid, draftable player, but RBs with his combination of physical ability and skill are a dime a dozen. He looks to me like a 4th - 6th round prospect. Watch this game vs. Northwestern in 2012. He runs high (as you'd expect from a guy who is 6'1"+). He runs with the power of a 220 pounder, not a 240 pounder. Watch the goal line plays for an example of both his high running and lack of power for a big back. In pass protection he was about 50/50, with a couple of ugly whiffs. On a number of plays he tried to get to the edge and looked slower than the Northwestern LBs. On the plus side, he did show good vision on a number of inside plays, which netted him his only good plays in that game. I can see him being a successful one-cut runner in our new zone scheme, but you can get good one-cut zone runners anywhere during and after the draft. You don't need to burn a 2nd round pick to get one. I still think that this was a big time reach.

Yeah, I've read some good things about him and read some bad things about him. I wonder if Colbert really wanted this guy or if he gave Tomlin a gift, because Tomlin loves this kid. It still remains to be seen if Tomlin has an eye for talent or not.

We may never know what went into the decision process, and who "pounded the table" to get him drafted. The thing is, this will LOOK like a good pick almost immediately. He will probably start, and as long as our young and improving O line stays healthy, he will put up good numbers. I may even take him in the 3rd or 4th round of my fantasy drafts next year. However, I think that his success will be more due to the starting opportunity that he will be given, and the performance of our line. There are a lot of RBs who could be successful behind our line if it stays healthy.
