Not looking to the Falcons for a winning example, but at least Penix played on the Falcons last year. For Rodgers, this is a new team, new coaches, and he has no idea what the in-game experience is with the Steelers. The closest he's come is the two-minute drill against TB, and he didn't score one first down.

Stafford did not play in the preseason in his first year with the rams in 2021....

Yeah, because Stafford played in the same state as Penix is currently playing in so it equals out.

Problem is... Steelers look worse in weeks 12-18, than they do in week 1. It's the Cowher years in reverse. Cowher teams started out slow and kicked ass later on in the season.

September has been a good month for the mediocre 2020's Steelers.

Under Tomlin the Steelers are 0.500 in the first month of football.

I was referring more to recent years. Tomlin had some bad starts... 2013 Steelers started 0-4, but finished strong.

NFL.Com has been running an ad in their ticker for this game all week, so I am hoping this is their national game tonight, and we may get the NFL Network Broadcasters, and not the local boys in Carolina.

If we both are trying to get to the finish line, and neither one makes it, what difference does it make if we started slow, or fast??

So on average, September is not a losing month for MT. Sounds familiar for some reason. :hmm:

This idea that QB's and receivers have to establish some magical chemistry is a bit absurd. A good QB is a good QB no matter who he's throwing too, and a good WR gets open and catches balls regardless of who's throwing them. If this idea were really true you'd never see a backup come in a game a light it up like you've seen many times.
And even it is true, you can't do that in 2 series of downs. It's much more likely you establish it in practice, through repetition, than in a game.

I don't know about the magical chemistry but the QB and receiver definitely need to sync with timing and speed of their routes and cuts, how quickly the ball is thrown, etc. There is a reason why Roethlisberger/Brown were a deadly duo, but Brown never played as well under any other QB.

I'm sure they are doing plenty of this in practice.

Sure. But tough to simulate game speed against real opponents.

In NFL preseason games, the starters only ever play a few drives in each game (and maybe none at all in the last). That gives a QB and his targets (WRs, TEs, etc) just a few opportunities to see “game speed”.

I feel chemistry is developed with practice and a lot of reps. It’s not like the Steelers corners are jogging around practice and letting receivers run free.

Preseason is overrated. It’s just another three weeks for the sports media to sell viewership.

You're the one trying to shut down valid criticism of the team. Going on a decade without a playoff win.

They are getting as much game speed as they would be getting against backups in the Preseason. Notice throughout the Preseason when most of the teams have played starters, the opponent didn't.

I agree mostly, but I think it's a good way to see rookies against other rookies, 2nd, and 3rd string against each other to help pick who you may want to keep. Outside of that I totally agree.
