Jets are in the same QB purgatory. They're scrambling, tossing money at anything that resembles a QB. I'd hardly call the Jets signing Fields for $30 million an indicator Fields is worth $3 million, much less $30 million.

Fields does still have potential, but will it ever manifest into a capable passing QB? As others have noted, a running QB with sporadic throwing isn't ever going to compete with good teams in the playoffs. Is he better than Mason? Probably. I'd rather take a swing a Rodgers for a year or a rookie halfway through the season (after Mason holds down the fort playing his brand of mediocre football).

Would I have been upset if they had signed Fields? No, not really, but I don't see much upside with him either. He's shown he can run well, occasionally toss a rope downfield for a big gain, but he can't consistently throw well. MAYBE they'll have just the right OC to get more out of him in the passing game, but I am not holding my breath on that one.

Exactly. The Jets are in competition with the Browns for the worst-run organization in the league, so it makes little sense to judge Fields based on them overpaying him. This is an organization that once passed on a player because his rating on Madden was too low.

We don't know how much money they offered him. There were even reports that he wanted them to commit to him as their starter and they wouldn't do it.

The entire team collapsed during that five-game losing streak. That started with a loss to the Eagles, the top defense in the league. The Chiefs and Ravens also had outstanding defenses. They didn't have Pickens for the losses to the Eagles and Chiefs, then he somehow couldn't catch the ball in the loss to the Bengals. That left the Steelers without a legitimate NFL starter at receiver in those games.

Don't get me wrong. Wilson played poorly, too, but he faced circumstances in those games Fields did not have to handle in those first six games.

    correct

and this Fields turning things around is a bunch of bunk. he is 2nd rate - that is all. he does not suck but he is nothing special.

we are a 2nd tier team - will remain that. We ran into top teams the end of the Season last year and that reality sunk in finally for some of you here. and the Bunlges were HOT and HUNGRY. we were cooked.

    I knew it was coming

    This D is predictable (tomlin)
    this O is vanilla (tomlin)

the oline was young and banged up last year.

    and Pickens is brain dead.

Tomlin is going to coach until then and come out in a walker just to spite his haters.

Crap, so next playoff win is 2051? I am not sure I'll make it that long. Time to take a multi-vitamin and daily oxygen chamber visits.

Reported that he was offered a 2 year contract worth 30 million, no guaranteed money past the first year.

The amount is not as important as the fact they chose Fields and never considered bringing Wilson back.

LOL... I am assuming your scenario of the Steelers getting their next playoff win in 2051, has Mike Tomlin retiring in 2050. :)

Right now, I don't know if the Steelers will ever get another Payoff win with Mike Tomlin as their head coach. I still think it is a shame that we let Brian Flores out the door, and did not promote him to DC.

Yeah, original post had Tomlin hanging on until 2050, so yeah, that pretty much means 2051 is our year.
I am sure that bug eyes will manage a playoff win before then, probably playing the division winner in the worst division in history, winning with a 8-9 record.

Pat Freiermuth has faith in Mason so that’s good enough for me ;)

"As guys on the team, we have all the belief in Mason," Freiermuth said. "You know he made some big plays when he was here last, winning three straight games to make the playoffs. Whatever happens, happens, but we will see."

Also ....let's not leave out that Fields didn't win a game if the D gave up over 16 points. 90% of Qbs , and their backups can do that. Glad both are gone. Go Mason. LoL

Don't forget that Fields was handcuffed by Tomlin and he was not used to his strengths.. It's going to be a very bad look for Tomlin and the Steelers if Fields excels with the Jets(same thing for Kenny with the Browns)

I also don't take his time with the Bears seriously since the Bears had one of the worst head coaches of all time.

It so funny every Qb that doesn't do well here is handcuffed by Tomlin. LoL. Trubisky, and Pickett fans .....Tomlin handcuffed them, but somehow didn't handcuff Mason, and then Field, but not Wilson, or the backup. LoL

Bruce Arians has already said in the past that he was handcuffed when he was with the Steelers and couldn't open up the offense as he wanted when he was our OC.

Which QB did Tomlin manage to develop well with us?

If Tomlin hadn't handcuffed Fields and had played to his strengths and kept him as the starter for the entire season maybe we would have our answer at QB right now and for years to come, but we'll never know.

All OCs are handcuffed at times. That's why they try to become HCs. Fields will be an afterthought in 2 years. He sucks.

Not even true...the majority of OCs can run their offense as they want...For Fields, maybe but we will see in the next few years if you are right or not

Wrong. They all can run it up till a point....HCs always chime in. That's why they have headsets. Don't believe me.....watch wired up once in awhile, and listen to the HCs tell the OCs to change a call, or to run something different.

You are right about that but there are different levels of being handcuffed. As the Steelers very often start games too slow on offense in the Tomlin era(first quarter)....If you look at the Steelers in 2004 and 2005, they often had a fast start on offense before playing Cowherball for the rest of the game to protect the lead.

I was happy with mason the end of his last season here. So I'll say again, I'm fine with him being the starter.

There's not really a QB I'm seeing that I is a lot better. Except geno Smith.
