Hines was on NFL AM this morning and was talking about the recent 'unnamed' player calling out Woodley to the media. He said: "when you lose so much leadership in the locker room, that's when things present itself like that". He went on to say, "guys start finger-pointing, calling out other guys. That is not the Steeler way. We've always had a rule: We are a band of brothers. We've always collectively kept everything in house. ... But there was no finger-pointing and calling each other out. That's a total disarray, a locker room in disarray."

It's kind of amazing how much media attention an anonymous player can create by allegedly saying a player was out of shape last year.

I would almost argue that the problem is not that we've lost leaders. Every team does that. The problem is that we haven't gained any. I put a lot of this on the front office. I mean how can you expect guys to be leaders when coming out of college they have threatened women, failed drug tests at the combine WHICH IS THE EQUIVALENT OF FAILING ONE AT A JOB INTERVIEW, been charged with DUI, and had other off the field problems. Not only do we seem to be lacking leadership in the locker room we really seem to be lacking it at the top. I know that might not be a popular opinion to state but it's my opinion nonetheless. I need convincing otherwise and I wish someone could make me feel better.

What is Hines talking about? I love the guy, but he did in fact call Ben out, in the media, a few seasons ago.

Basically, He's just letting the front office know that it may have been in the best interest to let him go out on his own terms. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Quite.

I love Hines to bits, but this is just another case of him saying "you shouldn't have released me."

And it gets old, very quickly. Epecially as there was that other story that it might not even have been a player from the locker room. It's pure speculation on Hines' part.

I preferred him as a player than an analyst!

Just a couple of questions that just point out how crazy all this talk is.

    1. Is Hines still in the locker room? No. Than how does he know.

    2. Is the player who made the comment correct? Yes, Woodley was overweight this past year and even he knows it. If he didn't he wouldn't be out with a new trainer this offseason.

    3. Should the comment have been made in public? No, but what is done is done.

    4. Is the player who made the comment going to be in the locker room this year? We don't know, but it is possible it is Mendenhall or Wallace just trying to stir stuff up.

    5. Was their drama in our locker room last year? Yes. How do we know that? Wallace and Mendenhall show it. We have not talked about resigning either of these guys....why? Is it their talent? No. My guess is this teams FO knows that they were creating trouble in the locker room.

He did put his name to it though, maybe he's talking about the anonymous stuff, nothing can be resolved when you don't know who is saying it. I'm sure he and Ben had a talk about the issue but who's Woodley going to talk to?

Well...I still think Ward had 1 good year left in a supporting role. Not sure how much it would have changed things if any?

Second...this has to be a good thing. You know Woodley is not going to want to get called out like that ever again. You know he is going to be on a mission for next year...

They should ve kept Hines around if nothing more than to groom some of the younger guys. He said he wouldve taken the league minimum to stay.

Only mission Woodley is on is being fat and lazy. But I hope you are right.

All I can say is, Thank you for posting this link, Towel!
    Damn, I miss Hines.
I am one of those that think he still had a good year left in him.
Regardless, there is no arguing with the fact that he surpassed John Stallworth, and Lynn Swann, in the Steeler`s record books.
If that fact alone, doesn`t guarantee him a spot in the Hall of fame, the Fame is a joke!!!
Not to mention his toughness, and charisma.
I have seen that guy take hits that would leave most athletes gasping for air, on their backs, and get up.... GRINNING!!!
Hell yeah, he knew he was getting in the opponents` heads by doing that.
    Aside from all that..
No, he probably doesn`t know exactly what is going on in the Steeler locker room, since he`s been gone, and, MAYBE...
It`s not his place to speculate.
But, I for one, will give him the benefit of the doubt, and listen to what he has to say about a team that he felt enough love for, to retire, instead of wear another team`s colors!!!
IMHO, He is one of a dying breed, and I am seriously concerned, that our team may be the same.
It ain`t easy to get all these ego maniacs that get paid big money, to buy into a "team first" philosophy.
Especially the younger ones, if there are no older guys around to keep them in check.
I`m hopin we can hang onto the tradition we have always had, but the times they are a-changin... and it is very hard to be a rock in that river, and resist the change that is happening all around the league.
We are down to very few veteran leaders, and one of our best, HEATH, leads more by example, than words...
The younginz don`t always pick up on that.
    Anyhow, all serious B.S. aside,
It was great to see Hines bein Hines, and throwin a shout out to "The Walking Dead", and the Iron Man thing he`s doin,
but... WHAT THE HELL WAS HE WEARING AROUND HIS WRIST?!?
Took me back to days of "slammin bones down" on the table... LOL!:roflmao:
The whole interview... I just kept hearin... "smack, bang, smack", on the desk...
Noticed the guy to his left wearin the same kinda thing.
New fad, like the little rubber band kinda bracelets, that have been popular for whatever the "cause of the month" is the last few years?
Guess I`m an old fogey, and "outta the loop" nowadays...
    GO STEELERS!!!

Too difficult to speculate what Hines does or does not know about the Steelers locker room. Like Thigpen just said...why wasn't Hines already grooming this same group that is there now. Leaders have to want to lead. I don't agree with one player calling out another player, however, if it forces Woodley to be a player again than so be it. As for Steeler tradition, you are right, times they are a-changing. At the same time, all teams are going through the same pains but one still manages to be a Superbowl winner. We can do it to!

He retired 1 year ago and it's still the same team, if things were getting bad 2 years ago than there's a good chance things have gotten worse. You don't have to be in there to know. Get rid of Wallace and medenhall then I'm sure things will get quieter.

The issue that kicked all of this off was about Woodley... so getting rid of Mendenhall fixes it?

I'll say it again: the point of this outburst from Hines is a very, very thinly veiled rebuke to the Steelers for cutting him. He's basically saying they need a leader like him there. Even though if there are issues in the locker room, they would have been there while Hines was as well.

This off-season has already gone on too long!

I would say Hines Ward would be qualified to know what goes on
in locker rooms. he knows the Steelers lack leaders (coaches included).
Why do you think Colbert come right out after what Hines says?
Who is watching the WATCHERS here? LOL

Not just Mendy, Wallace too. Hines may be saying that someone needs to pick up the reins in the locker room. Step up, be an example, be a leader. Do things for the good of the team. Last offseason, too many positive influences left the team: Farrior, Hines, Aaron Smith.
