This guy gets it! He wants to see this team rise again. Everyone else is content with mediocrity... according to their comments?!

It don't change the fact their defense were their strongest unit of the chiefs last year....I mean their WR core was poor all season long

He lost me at, "...for close to three decades, they have dominated, thanks to defense.". Dominated what? Anyway, the only way a trade could turn things around is if we found a taker for Tomlin.

It really isn't a defensive league anymore, a good offense is the best defense you can have. TJ is a great player, a generational talent, but they haven't won anything with him because they've had no offense for nearly 5 years now, and it's unlikely to improve all that much while TJ still has a few years left in his prime. TJ could be the missing piece for a team that already has a good offense, and needs a great defensive player to help them get over the hump. The Steelers need a franchise QB more than TJ, and trading him for a couple 1st rounders would give them a much better chance of getting one. It would be great if Fields would pan out for them, or even Wilson short term, but I just don't see it happening

For those that think we should trade Watt, what do you think we would get in return?

I’m not against trading Watt, but it would have to be a rich package; which, therein lies the problem, I’m not sure we will get nearly what people think.

As an example, when JJ Watt hit 30, he started having injuries and his later years just weren’t the same. Non-QBs who are on the wrong side of 30 generally don’t garner huge trade returns.

This guy is saying we would get two number one picks. I don't see that. Maybe a high number one, but we might be headed there anyway.

    Trading Watt is mindless.

I see people disagree with this but I absolutely see your point. Watt will be 30 this season. He will decline as we all do. Big deal if we have TJ Watt for another 2-3 years and we win 9 games. Lets face it, we need a young good QB for future. Say we get one in the draft. TJ will be 33-34 before he learns the league. I love TJ and all he's done for us. Granted we have many wins because of him but he is not the future.

Yes they do but a lot of fans, even Chief fans know that if they didn't have that strong D last season the O would not have won it for them.

I'm not saying that you give him away for peanuts, I think there are a few teams out there that would give up two 1st round picks for him, but they better act on it soon while TJ still has that kind of value. The Steelers can have all the TJ's in the world, but they're never going to win anything until they get a franchise QB

I think the Steelers can still have a good enough defense without TJ, but they're never going to be contenders if they can't score points

For the current steelers team,I don't think the steelers can have a good defense without T.J,maybe in the future with different players and scheme(this is a big if it happen for the scheme but we can dream lol!)but yeah, can't win with a bottom 5 offense,no matter what!

I think some people are thinking about the Khalil Mack trade, but I think he was 26 or 27 at the time of that trade (where there were a couple first round picks involved). Watt is turning 30 in a couple months.

I think if you go back and look at trades involving first round picks, most involve marquee players who are in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year in the league.

I love Watt and still think he is one of the best. Having said that, I am not sure how many years he has left playing at that high of a level, which is why I don’t think we would get multiple firsts. The NFL isn’t like hockey where they have gaudy trades for “rental” stars who might play a few years for a team.

Everyone has a shelf life. James Harrison’s last double digit sack seasons were at 31 and 32 years old (when he had 10 and 10.5 sacks).

It would hurt the steelers in the short term but in the long run it could benefit the steelers

And again, this scenario is only if the steelers are stuck in the middle again after this year and they have no future at the QB position....It's been at least 5 years that the steelers are stuck in the middle and Watt will have 30 next season, so it would be unlikely that the steelers compete for a super bowl with him in the lineup if our offense is awful again, why not add assets to our team when you have the opportunity to do so

I don't disagree with your point, but Khalil Mack is no TJ. If they can't get two 1st rounders for TJ, I'm not trading him. I think TJ still has that kind of value, even at 29. I think there are a few teams out there that are in the win now mode that would give up two first rounders for him. But like I said, the Steelers need to act on it soon

The last time the steelers had a losing season was in 2003 and it was the best thing who could happen for the steelers since they had the chance to draft Roethlisberger in the 2004 draft

Look at Houston now after trading Watson. I would hate to do it, but if were not winning. We can just as easily not win without him. The NFL is an offensive league. It's crazy to spend money on defense when half of the good defensive plays now end up being penalized by the refs. I love old school defensive football, unfortunately that isn’t the game anymore. In addition at some point if your TJ you are gonna want to move on in hopes of being on a perennial playoff team.

IMO that is not the way to look at it. Do we want to be happy having a HOFer for a few more years so we can keep Tomlins record intact (maybe) or do we want to build a team that can say, maybe win a Playoff game?

Should the Steelers set the NFL on fire with TJ's help I'll re-visit this but I can see the advantage of using TJ to better us for the future. How many more years can he play at his current level and we'd really be screwed if some nagging injury takes over because his value will drop fast.

Then it would be crazy for another team to give up 1st round picks for a defensive player, no matter how good he is. Who needs a player who can consistently sack quarterbacks, right?

"old school defensive football" Not sure how old you are but the 70's Steelers would have sat in a penalty box borrowed from the NHL for all the penalties they would have committed under these help the offense rules. I could see Lambert and Blount going into NFL headquarters and kicking all their asses;)
