What if it is not the conditioning? (Or at least, not just the conditioning.)
Players are wearing lighter and smaller pads. That may help for the speed, but I would think it would make them more susceptible to deep bruises and sprains. I'd be interested to see if there is any correlation between injuries and changes the players have made in their protection.

Well next season every player has to wear knee and thigh pads. Idk what the details are, such as how thick the pads will have to be but i'm sure anything is better than nothing at all. Only time will tell. But i'm glad someone inside the organization is looking into it. I swear Woodley pulls a hamstring every other game.

Considering how mentally undisciplined our guys were this year, I have no trouble believing that they would let there conditioning programs lapse. With the CBA the way it is now, it's more on the players like the article said, is it really that hard to believe after what we saw on the field this year that these guys would be too lazy to keep up with their conditioning in the off season?

I think that is the whole key to our injuries. Conditioning not just with the team but outside the team facility. We seem for some reason be the team that starts to have injury problems first. Must be very frustrating to the Rooney's and the coaching staff. I they also need to look at what goes on in the practice sessions and see if they in fact productive.

The problem is most of these injuries don't have squat to do with conditioning (Spence,Colon,Miller,Brown,Ben,Ike,Harrison,Gilbert,Decastro,Johnson,Redman too name a few).

Yeah and I bet that our injuries that you might be able to link to conditioning are no more than any other team.

:this!: We have been saying this all year. Isn't it odd that this has to come from the front office, that we have to look into this. Agree on the mentally undisciplined goes hand and hand with undisciplined off season training and conditioning.

    :this!:
No amount of conditioning is going to prevent you from getting injured when a 350 lard ass rolls up on your ankle.

It still bears looking into. I'd like to see the injury statistics from before and after the new CBA. If you're not practicing in pads then there's going to be an issue on gameday.

I'm glad they are, but that doesn't change teh fact that a lot of our injuries aren't conditioning related. As far as pre and post cba goes I doubt we have a large enough sample size to make an accurate statistical analysis.

I'm glad Rooney is looking into it. I don't remember so many injuries ravaging this team like this before the Tomlin tenure......

All I know is Chett Fuhrman was not retained by Tomlin even though he was regarded as one of the best in the NFL...

Rooney also said we need more pressure on the QB and the turnovers will come. He knows what this team needs, I'm confident he will get us back on track.

I think thew owner of the team will have a little better idea of the injury reports then us, if he thinks its worth looking into then I'd say the amount of injuries we are sustaining is unusual.

I was always indifferent to Giemont. Could care less if he stays or goes. That is until I saw an advertisement for the Ab Coaster, complete with a glowing endorsement from our very own Garrett Giemont! No self-respecting strength coach would ever haul one of those gimmicks into his weight room, let alone program it into a routine. He's as good as gone now for all I care. Maybe that's why we suck in the trenches, all the years of poor core development are finally catching up with us.

Conditioning also improves speed, quickness, and balance, which might prevent some injuries, and maybe you could get out of the way of the lardass.

People, it is paramount that our OL are as strong as
anybody in the league. Do you feel that they are? It is paramount that
all our ball players are in the best shape that they can possibly be in.
Do you feel that they are? How about this for OL, Before we
take the field @ST Vincents I want all my OL to be able to bench press
250 LBs 35 times. If you can't I want to know why? This is a start.
I have other goals for other position players but this will come at another time.
Once again, If I am the Rooney's and I am paying you these outragious
salary's, I want some production. Is that a fair proposition?

and the conditioning could turn the lardass into a less of an lardass so he doesn't get pushed around as much,, get more muscle on than fat

He mentions as part of the program, not the entire program. Even pros have to be bored with doing the same exercises over and over again. If using a gimmick keeps them a little more engaged during exercises, or allows them to work out a little longer (in addition to all the other exercises they do), then it shouldn't be a reason to can the guy.

i miss the days when positions would get together and try to out work each other. thats why the 70's teams were good. they worked out against each other religously. we don't have that leader here. max was always known for being lazy and so was colon about working out and staying in shape and it went right down the line to the younger guys. i hope pouncey takes this over for this O-line and other positions follow.

heck bring in jerry rice and make these guys do his off-season workouts.

It does need to be looked into, and I'm glad they're finally doing it. Conditioning isn't just about cardio and heart rate. Being in top physical condition and flexible will help against rolling injuries as well. Heath finally tore his ACL, and I say finally because he gets rolled up on every single game. Every week I see him blocking some guy a few yards upfield when a pile lands on him from behind or the side. Every week I say, "Oh crap! It looked like he tore his ACL!" but he always gets up afterwards. At least until this year. I believe Heath's commitment to his body helped him. All the other injuries were either concussions or minor sprains from which he quickly recovered.

I think it's a waste of time. The only conclusion they will reach is it's football and injuries happen. Injuries happened in the past and injuries will continue to happen in the future. Injuries are inevitable in all sports. The injury risk is enhanced for football players because of the size and speed of the players, the bodies that fly around, and the collisions that take place.
