Just wanted to start it's own thread because this has got to be the most egregious non call of the game.

I see many saying it's not an illegal play, but it is unnecessary roughness, by definition a blind-side block.

    Rule 12 Section 2

    ARTICLE 7. BLINDSIDE BLOCK
It is a foul if a player initiates a block when his path is toward or parallel to his own end line and makes forcible contact to his opponent with his helmet, forearm, or shoulder.

Note: It is not a foul for a blindside block if the forcible contact occurs in “close-line play” prior to the ball leaving that area. The ball is not considered to have left that area if the player who takes the snap, either from a shotgun position or from under center, retreats in the pocket immediately or with a slight delay, and hands the ball to another player, or runs with the ball himself. This exception does not apply to any action other than a designed play. Any forcible contact in “close-line play” is still subject to the restrictions for crackback and peel back blocks.

    ARTICLE 8. UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS
    (g) unnecessarily running, diving into, cutting, or throwing the body against or on a player who (1) is out of the play or (2) should not have reasonably anticipated such contact by an opponent, before or after the ball is dead;

    There's even this note:

Note: When in question about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactics, the covering official(s) should always call unnecessary roughness.

I suspect we won't hear anything but maybe a fine from this though. They wouldn't want to have Allen without an offensive line starter in this next game.

My question is the league going to fine Conner McGovern?! I seriously doubt a suspension is coming at this point. Gonna have to wait and see what the league says to close out the week.

Regardless, it was a dirty play. Hope Porter Jr is okay.

It seriously looked like he was just wanted to knock Joey out. He lowered his helmet.

Pretty good strategy, take out about the only good defensive player we have left. Where was the "great" Highsmith, Minkah, or any of those other guys?

I'm not seeing any fines at all. Wouldn't they do it faster with a game in a few hours?

I can’t find any either which seems strange. It usually is midweek.

Well you know he's not getting suspended then. You'd think that if the fines are meant to discourage behaviors in games, they'd maybe put them out in time to discourage players from doing the same stuff?

Conner McGovern is the nephew of two of my friends. I was hoping he was ok when he left the game a play before he came back in and clocked Porter from behind.

I wasn't as much of a fan of McGovern after that play.

No fines for Buffalo or Steelers

No Buffalo Bills were fined by the NFL for game-related rules violations during Wild Card Weekend, but four other players were.

The biggest fine this week went to Houston Texans safety Jalen Pitre, who was docked $10,927. Other players who drew fines included Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker K.J. Britt ($5,592), Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph ($5,052), and Los Angeles Rams cornerback Tre Tomlinson ($4,444).

If McGovern had been a Steeler, Steeler hating Goodell would’ve gotten $50K from McGovern.

Hopefully plays like this will go towards the tush push, the brotherly shove, the ass grab or anything else Chris collinsworth wants to call it being outlawed

    When did it become legal

I still remember when it was illegal to aid the forward progress of the ball carrier

I remember about 1995 Walter Peyton was stopped short of the goal line and Refrigerator Perry picked him up and tossed him like a rag doll over the pile into the end zone

It was called back but I admired the effort

The rule was changed to allow it in 2005.

I don't get how that was not unnecessary roughness, forget about hitting helmet to helmet.

I was going to give you a hard time and note that since Payton retired in '87 and The Fridge in '94, that would've been impressive.

Then I realized that at your age "about" probably covers a lot more ground than most, and decided to make it an age joke instead .

I think you still can’t lift the runner and actually carry them. That’s what got me about the 4th down Allen dive.
IIRC he was on top of the pile and the RB lifted his legs up and then pushed him over the line. Specifically thought that part was illegal still.

So that should've been a penalty? What exactly would the refs call it? An illegal airborne assist? :lolol:

By definition and how the announcers were calling it, he pulled Allen over before pushing him. Absolutely a penalty, because while pushing is allowed, Pulling and is not. Moot point now, but you know it's those was he pulled or pushed judgement calls.

ARTICLE 4. ASSISTING THE RUNNER AND INTERLOCKING INTERFERENCE

    No offensive player may:

    1. pull a runner in any direction at any time;
    2. use interlocking interference, by grasping a teammate or by using his hands or arms to encircle the body of a teammate in an effort to block an opponent; or
    3. push or throw his body against a teammate to aid him in an attempt to obstruct an opponent or to recover a loose ball.

It's ridiculous and we have benefitted from it and it's weak and should be outlawed like it was previously. The rule still forbids pulling but you can push. Either win the man to man battle or not. The offense already has a ridiculous advantage and this rule should never have been changed in the first place.
