This was in the 70s. One of their running backs surpassed 1000 yards rushing, for the first time in Bunghole history. It was either Boobie Clark or Essex Johnson. Anyway, they stopped the game and gave him a plaque honoring the team’s first thousand yard season.
On the next play, he was tackled for a loss and came out of the game. He never got the yardage back, and ended the year with 993 yards or something like that.
Does anyone else remember that? Was it against the Steelers?
I wonder where that plaque is today……

This actually happened but it was Dave Hampton for the Falcons back in the early 70's. Hampton had 1,001 yards rushing for the season and the game was stopped and he was given a plaque on the field for being the first Falcon to ever run for 1,000 yards. Instead of taking him out of the game a toss sweep was called the next play and he lost 6 yards. They then punted and never got the ball back and Hampton finished with 995 yards. The next year he had 997 and then in 1975 Hampton gained 1,002 yards and then was officially the first Falcon to run for 1,000 yards.

I looked it up, Essex Johnson apparently went over 1000 three times during the last game of the year, and lost the yardage three times! Couldn’t find mention of stopping the game and giving him a plaque, so maybe I conflated that with the Falcons incident.

Pretty stupid of them giving him the plaque until the game was actually over

Yep. That’s why I considered it to be Brownlike. But it was the Falcons, and apparently the Bung Holes did not do anything that dumb.
Weird that the Steelers are the only team in the division with no Brown DNA. The Ratbirds are the real Browns, the Bung Holes were founded by Paul Brown after he was exiled, the present Browns are the expansion Browns. I hope that means that we don’t do stupid things as much as the others.
