This guy went from an abysmal grade with us to the best offensive guard this season so far. "Dotson holds an 85.3 grade from PFF, which has skyrocketed from his 65.4 grade last season." Hmm somebody more knowledgable than me has to explain this. That has to be an indictment of our OL coach, no? Stumbled on this and was amazed by that transformation.

Stop reading/listening to the trolls. PFF grades don't mean anything in the real world. The penalty magnet went to a different team and started playing well again maybe. Time will tell if it lasts.

Meh. PFF isn’t completely devoid of value. For every Watt v Garrett headscratcher, there are countless “yeah, ok, that one doesn’t sound wrong” comparisons.

It’s not the gold standard, but it’s generally useful.

Don’t you know? According to a few members of this board coaching has nothing to do with it.

I've found PFF errors on simple things like rush attempts, which is always on my mind when I'm reading their evaluations.

    I mean...

Placing Kevin Dotson at his natural spot at Right Guard was a good start to begin with. Hell, Duke Mayweather, one of the best Offensive Line Analysts today, had a solution about this way back in 2022 in a tweet below:

Now, is it easy to state all of this in hindsight?! Sure. However, remember that Kendrick Green came out of Illinois as a natural Left Guard. James Daniel's did have time as a Center too; further hitting this post home. However, what was shall remain so and there is nothing that can be done about it.

What must be done is that Tomlin and the entire Coaching Staff need to seriously self evaluate some of the decisions that they make. For example, having a 6'7 Tight End in Darnell Washington should be a great tool for short yardage downs or even the goal line situations that both Tomlin and Kahn were excited about. How about Calvin Austin the Third and utilizing his speed in different ways as opposed to a mere go route splitting the safeties?! At this point, why not allocate more route concepts for George Pickens (though this was done against Balitmore).

Overall, it is a combination of things as to why not just Kevin Dotson but other former Steelers are either having success or are performing better overall in other places. This also demonstrates that the talent being acquired isn't good at all. The talent that is being acquired however is not being properly utilized...

.... and that aspect befalls on coaching.

    PFF = Pretty F**king Fake.
Same sight that had T. Edmunds higher ranked than Minkah. LoL That should be enough....no....need more....TJ Watt behind anyone. Need more.
They were the 1st place I ever seen them give a higher ranking to a Qb that threw more ints, and fumbles in a game, and lost , but graded Him higher than the Qb that won, had more yards , no turnovers, more tds, and won......sorry.....I don't care what You think You know.....that is WRONG.
Again....PFF = Pretty F**king Fake. Matter of fact if I find Myself agreeing with them.....I automatically start to rethink what I was thinking .....they are that bad.

Underutilizing or improperly using the talent they have seems to be a pattern for the Steelers coaching staff. When we see promising young players regress and see some players progress after leaving the Steelers, it makes you wonder and gives cause for concern. The Steelers organization needs to do some serious soul searching and make some difficult decisions to try to get back to its winning ways meaning winning in the post season and not having non-losing regular seasons.

Interesting before I posted it I looked down the first page and didn't see it so I'm surprised there were two others. May God forgive me and may my soul be saved for such a transgression.

Debate if you will, but thing remains clear: While in Pgh Dotson remained a poor performer on the field. Fact 1. While in LA Dotson is performing well, fact 2. Now, we can debate if he is truly playing the best of any OG as PFF contends, but what is not open to real debate is whether he is playing well, because he is, and he wasn't in Pgh, for whatever reason. Coaching would be at the top of the possible causes.

The Steelers are not productive with the players on the roster, that is a real problem.

    Square peg round hole.

It is interesting of late, even Green was showing better than here in a very small sample size.

Overall though, I don’t think there are a lot of examples of players leaving here and performing better but I definitely think there is a correlation with the line. Weidl brought in guys he knows are good and preformed well before getting here and poof. Why?

If the Steelers would have kept Dotson as the backup guard, When Daniels went down at RG it would have been interesting to see if Dotson would have become the top of the league guard he is now.

Ramon Foster on his podcast believed some of the success Dotson was having this year had to do with the fact that he was playing RG for Los Angeles.

weidl always liked big body linemen and i can see that trend happening. but again MT likes guys that may not be good fit's for the system we are trying to run and for the system the o-line coach is trying to run and the system the OC is trying to run. we see it on defense as well with our DB's. man players mixed with zone players and trying to make them all work together. too much hodge podge. power RB with a finesse style of blocking scheme. nothing is consistant in MT's offenses or defenses and staffs. he like individuals more than fits.

how many players have we seen added at different times that we hear they liked him pre draft 2-3 years ago? now we have added him to the PS or active roster. well that's fine but we have changed personnel since that point and are now trying to fit them in with a different style. this has gone on for years under MT. pick a style and add the players that fit it. not every good college player fits what we do. or want to do. it creates what we are and have been seeing on the field. get a vision and adjust to it. one size doesn't fit all.
