Is it his ceiling or is it his floor is lower than expected?

Sh!t, I never thought of it like that. I know you weren't too high on him from the jump but maybe you're right. Cheers to hoping you're not.

Pickett is the kind of QB that needs a near-perfect team around him in order to excel. He's not the kind of QB that can elevate those around him. And that's a problem for this version of the Pittsburgh Steelers cause they are far from a perfect offense. They have some pieces, but just not enough.

When Kenny was asked at the end of last year about why he was so clutch in the final minutes of a game, he gave credit to Brian Flores. He said Flores would go over and over with him the tendencies of the opposing defense and Kenny said it made it a lot easier for him because everything Flores was showing him turned out to be true. I wonder how much the absence of Flores this year is hurting Kenny's play.

What's one thing that KFP is really good at? Nothing. He is average at best at certain things. He isn't that accurate, doesn't have a great arm, doesn't have a quick release, isn't a great runner, doesnt have great pocket presence, doesn't have a good long ball, doesn't reads defenses well. The only thing is that he went to Pitt and that made some fall in love with the story.

At this point, I’m just hoping Kenny can become Neil O’Donnell. O’Donnell had a strong supporting cast AND good coaching and helped lead the Steelers to the Super Bowl. We won’t talk about what happened once they got there.

That's the thing, Flores took it upon himself to coach up Kenny by going over the opposing defenses with him. That should have been the job of the offensive coaches but Kenny never mentioned any of them, he only mentioned Flores.

Which makes one ponder why a defensive coach is doing this and not the offensive coordinator or QB coach

    Hmm

No, I was just thinking of reasons for Pickett's decline this year and remembered him praising Flores for his film breakdown of the upcoming defense that he would be facing. Sure someone is doing that again this year but maybe not at the quality that Flores did last season.

Well I was told He was a way harder worker, and Studier than previous Qbs....so maybe He should slack off more. LOL. In all reality We were winning those games by rushing O, and a D, and the opposing DCs seen this, and now they are 1st ,and foremost trying to shut down our running game. You can see this, and forcing KFP to beat them. Which I thought He could do. I seem to be wrong so far.

    From a Trib article today

One pejorative the Steelers quarterback does not deserve is the backhanded compliment that he's just "a game manager."

Pickett might not be thought of a proverbial gunslinger – and it would be inaccurate to refer to him as that, anyway. But by one measure compiled by Next Gen Stats, Pickett certainly doesn't come across as safe or conservative.

Pickett has the highest "aggressiveness" rate of any NFL quarterback. Defined by the percentage of passing attempts a quarterback makes in which there is a defender within 1 yard or less of the receiver at the time of completion or incompletion (think, "into tight coverage"), Pickett's 25.8% aggressiveness rate dwarfs all but one other league QB. Aside from the Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love (25.3%), none of the other 32 qualifying passers has thrown more than 18.9% of his passes into such tight windows.

By comparison, Pickett's "AGG%" as a rookie last season was 15.4%. Perennial MVP candidates Jalen Hurts (11.3%), Patrick Mahomes (11.4%) and Lamar Jackson (11.9%) are in the bottom half of the list of AGG%.

Is it possible that the football people, players, ex-players & coaches that you reference just aren’t looking to burn bridges and perhaps looking for other opportunities within the league? Opportunity that wouldn’t be likely if they’re bashing the Steelers and their Staff?

if I’m looking for opportunity, I’m saying all the “right” things no matter what, in an effort to show I’m a company man.

These stats tell me the receivers aren't getting separation, Dionte Johnson is missed, Canada cannot design plays that get receivers open, and Pickett's accuracy and/or arm strength cannot throw receivers open consistently.

You're not wrong, but you also just described a young Tom Brady. Not saying KP will be Brady, just saying that him not being amazing at any one thing right now isn't a death sentence, but the odds aren't in his favour

Agree with all but the last statement. Wasn’t everybody talking last year about how some of Kenny’s strengths are accuracy and anticipation? Why has he regressed this year in those areas? And Kenny’s arm strength is often cited on here but that is not a problem. His arm strength is more than sufficient and while I wouldn’t say it’s great, I would characterize it as above average and more than good enough. I’ve seen him fire a few intermediate fast balls that demonstrate that and I’ve seen him throw the ball 60+ yards in the air with relative ease.

That might be true of current players but not of former players, coaches and analysts.

Tomlin is not the czar of football, people can and do criticize him. Even Ryan Clark has and he played for him.

Based on this chart from last year:
The receivers are not getting open on their own but when throwing to them in this situation, Kenny was throwing them open better than anyone in the league last year.
Ideally a QB would be in the top right of this chart, making lots of attempts to the open man, but throwing them open well when necessary. There is an expanded chart with a lower dropback threshold and Mitch was even further to the left than Kenny, so it is a characteristic of the scheme.

For that particular exercise Flores was teaching him how defenses would defend him during a 2 minute drill. So it makes sense that a defensive mind like Flores would be the best choice to go over that with him. I dont know if thats normal for a defensive coach to do that but it’s that kind of initiative they miss from Flores, he was wearing several hats.

I just had a thought. I think it makes perfect sense for a defensive coach to let the offense know what to look for from the defense they’re going up against the next game. After all, your DC and defensive assistants are the experts in that area. Conversely, the offensive coaches should be giving their input to the defensive guys on what an offense may be trying to do from a scheme and gameplanning perspective based on the tendencies they see from their defense. Makes perfect sense. I’m sure other teams do that as well. I can just imagine the Steelers opposition for the week calling in the local high school coach to tell the defense what they should be looking for from Matt Canada’s offense, lol. :smiley1::facepalm:
