If Pickett can’t see a crosser 10 yards infront of him with a clean pocket, he needs let go asap.

Call me crazy, but I thought the Steelers had righted their ship in the 2nd half and were about to take the game over IF they let Boz kick a 51 yard FG to go to only being down by one score 9-16 at the end of the 3rd QTR.

    3RD QTR.
    Steelers Scoring Drive 3 points
    Texans 3 and out Punt
    Steelers Scoring Drive 3 points
    Texans 3 and Out
Steelers Scoring Drive 3 points if Bozwell is allowed to kick the FG
    End of the 3rd QTR.

Tomlin talks about stacking scoring drives, how is this not stacking good drives?

Don't blame Canada for the 4th and 1 call, as Tomlin killed all the momentum the team had going for it in the 3rd QTR.

They certainly had something going. I agree, they should have kicked the field goal to get it to one score. Not getting it on fourth down destroyed the momentum. That was Tomlin's call.

Any play that is stupid and works, isn't stupid. IF this play did work this thread would be gone. But it didn't and, of course, it sucks. A lot of that going around. JMO>

Pocket was collapsing, maybe he could’ve hung in there but would’ve taken a shot or risked getting the ball stripped.

bad playcall to me, specially with a QB getting battered behind a porous o line.

I agree with those who say we should’ve kicked it. Makes the game 16-9 and puts all the pressure on the Houston offense.

Everything about that play is stupid:

    1. They should have kicked a FG - Tomlin is stupid
    2. Going shotgun on 4th and 1 - Canada is stupid (even more stupid cause Harris was kicking butt in that quarter)
    3. Not hitting open WRs - Pickett is stupid

Keep in mind that *all* of the above happened after a time out where they discussed what they should do and what play to call!!! OMFG! How stupid could they all be??

Unfortunately for us fans, that one plays shows how bad/stupid the team is from HC to OC to QB.

That play reminds me of how Seattle lost to NE in the superbowl having 1st and goal with a few seconds left and passing into traffic instead of running Beast Mode for an easy SB win.

That was basically Tomlin’s point, that it was bad because it failed. I disagree. It was bad regardless. Sometimes players bail out their coaches after bad decisions.

Tomlin also blamed the injuries to Moore and Freiermuth, saying they couldn’t go to a heavy package with them both out.

I don’t agree. While a FG would have cut the lead to 1 possession, it would have been a 3rd straight drive where we fell short of a TD. That’s deflating. When the pass to Pickens got us to 4th and short, I was all in on going for it, especially with the way we had been running the ball in the second half.

That was the other problem. Not only did they not run it, they removed the threat of the run by putting Pickett in the shotgun. Tomlin's excuse for that was that they couldn't go into a heavy package with Moore and Freiermuth injured. They didn't have the bodies to do it. That means they made the decision to go even though the line was inconsistent, the quarterback was struggling, and they couldn't use the formation they wanted to use due to injury. How does that not sound like a terrible idea to you?

Even if they couldn't go with a heavy package, they still could have put Pickett under center. You don't need a heavy package to run a quarterback sneak or to hand it off to Harris. At the very least, run some play-action to take advantage of the way they had run the ball better that half.

My play call was a QB sneak with a push ala the “brotherly shove” or running Najee inside and telling the line to put on their underoos if they want to win. We were running effectively. Was it a risk? Yes, but in my opinion coming away with 3 (or a missed FG) would have been almost as invigorating for the Texans as the 4th down stop. Sometimes you have to man up and go get it if you’re going to mount a serious comeback challenge. I don’t fault Tomlin for the gamble, but I definitely fault the coaching for the play call and forcing a rattled QB to make an all-or-nothing throw.

You are correct. Unfortunately, that is a BS excuse from Tomlin.

Muth hasn't been able to block at all since the chest injury week 1.

Dan Moore was replaced by Broderick Jones at LT. Jones is the guy that is the road grader as a run blocker. If there's one thing he can do right now, it is to fire off the line of scrimmage and move people. Tomlin also had his shiny, new TE Washington sitting on the bench. He is another guy that can block like an offensive lineman. Line Washington right on the shoulder of Jones, put Pickett under center, and run the ball over the two players they drafted to do exactly what that play called for. All this talk by the coach that has told us they want to dominate physically. Tomlin says they want to impose their will on defenses with the run game. Yet when the time came to do exactly what they have supposedly built this team to do, he comes up with a lame excuse as to why he can't do it.

Tomlin doesn't even lie well these days. He had the best run blocking players available to him on that play. The two players that were drafted to do the exact thing that was required at the time. They were the exact men for the job. Tomlin just elected to do something else that failed. He isn't man enough to admit that. He now just comes up with off-the-cuff comments that are simply excuses for not getting things done. He is looking very small and hollow at the podium these days.

Tomlin has had nothing but excuses that blame the players for the past 10 years, while he collects $12.5M per season. don't expect any different.

Agreed. Tomlin's excuse about not being able to go into a heavy package doesn't work, either. Why not put him under center with Harris, two tight ends and two receivers? Maybe try not telegraphing what is coming. Try it out as a change of pace.

Yes....I wouldn't have called that play, but if the Qb throws the ball to 2 open targets instead of panicking, and doing some kind of spin move its a big 1st down, but most don't want to admit this, and I can figure out why???

I agree, but the play needs to be called for what the QB is capable of doing right at that time, not what the QB would ideally be capable of.

Making sure we point out that it was a stupid decision to go for it and an even more stupid decision to run that play isn't failing to admit that Pickett played it poorly. I do think some here are missing the fact he couldn't step up and the pocket was not clean. Once again, he rushed the decision because he didn't trust the line. His eyes aren't where they are supposed to be for a variety of reasons. Some are his fault. Some are not.

I agree. I said I wouldn't have called it, but we can’t say in one sentence....our play calling is predictable, and in the next say.....well We can only run plays our Qb can do. JMO. Right now what our Qb is comfortable doing will lead to not being able to run very much. It's a chicken, and egg sort of thing. No????

If your quarterback is struggling and you've got an all-or-nothing fourth-and-one, that is even more reason not to run a predictable pass play from the shotgun. That he was struggling makes the decision even worse. Put him under center to make the defense have to honor the sneak or a run by Harris. If you are going to throw, make it play action. Argue chicken or the egg all you want, but the terrible play call came before the poorly-execute play.

Again. I wouldn't have called it, but You can't say We are predictable, and then run a 4th, and one with Najee. Some of the same people complaining about this....are the same people that complained about us running Najee at the goal line for a 2 point conversion, and said We should had thrown to the TEs, or has everyone forgotten that??? Again I have said more than 20 times I wouldn't have run the play, but to say nobody was open is incorrect, and to say We can only do plays that our Qb is comfortable with, and then saying We are too predictable is pretty funny. However You look at it.

Now go back and actually read what I wrote. I never wrote that they had to run it with Harris. I wrote that by formation, they telegraphed that it was a pass. If they had put Pickett under center, that forces the Texans to defend the sneak, a run by Harris, or a pass. I don't see anybody arguing that no one was open on that play, so please stop whacking away at that straw man. Once Tomlin made the stupid decision to go for it, the primary mistake was using a formation that made things too easy on the defense.

Also, writing that the quarterback doesn't trust the plays being called or the pass protection is not the same as saying they can only run plays he is comfortable with. Not allowing him to call audibles, however, is a big problem. It tells him they don't trust him, which is not a good message to send even when he is struggling. It also leads to running plays that are clearly busts from the start. That wasn't the issue on that particular play, though it is important to note that nobody was open initially. This was a rare case of Pickett actually having a decent amount of time, which allowed receivers to eventually come open. If that was supposed to be a quick throw, and it should have been if you are going to pass out of the shotgun on fourth-and-one, his decision to scramble makes more sense. It was still a mistake, but I can see why he might bail early if nobody was open at first glance. I say it is a mistake by Pickett because it looks like he had his eyes on the rush, which was part of why he didn't see a receiver working his way open.

    LoL.
What part of I wouldn't have run the play don't You understand???
What part of there were people open before He tried scrambling don't you get??? Also 1999 called, and said enough of using words like Strawman, and gaslighting to try and make arguments. LoL. Come now. You are a teacher. Surly You can do better then having to repeat old phrases.
Again You are arguing with yourself. I said I wouldn't have called it. More than one time I've said it.... I'm just saying people were open. Nothing more Nothing less. It's You who ....for some reasons are letting it bother You.
