The team has to balance building for the long term and for now. The consistent message about this year's draft is that there were three or four tackles who belonged among the top 15 or 20 picks in the draft. Everybody had Jones among those guys. The other consistent message is that Jones was the one who likely wouldn't make an immediate impact because he only had one full season as a starter in college. Gonzalez would have been the better pick, but I think they may have had to agree not to take him to get the Patriots to agree to the trade. If he's not the pick, Jones was easily the right call. That he didn't open the season as the starter does not change that. It is beyond foolish to call that a miss four games into his career.

Also, it's not like they gave up a huge haul of picks to move into the top 10. They gave up a fourth-round pick to move up three spots. Your take shows little understanding of the draft, team building, or what was expected of Jones even before the Steelers took him.

Complain about the Harris pick all you like, but he was the Steelers' best player on the field Sunday in Houston. That wasn't the mistake. Taking Freiermuth over Humphrey in the second round was a huge error. The passed on a much-needed anchor in the middle of the line, an All-Pro, for a good player who is limited by his poor blocking.

I understand your take. I just disagree. Disagreed on the Harris pick the night it happened. He is in Yr. 3 - not impressed. Rd 1 running backs should be super-stars. He is not. for a many reasons, of course - but not on this team, he is not. he is very talented and skilled - but I wanted OL that night. Ben NEEDED OL that night, that draft.

    Colbert whiffed.

fast forward to Jones - time will tell. I stated that Gonzo was there - I listed 2 other players in another thread - DL and ILB, that we desperately need and are still hurting in those spots and we take a guy that now every seems to say that they knew he was young and needed time? that is crap. a crap decision in my book. You say we gave up a 4th round pick - maybe that pick would have been a capable player elsewhere on this roster - we will never know. You show little understanding of what drafts mean here.

We are a mess in part due to lousy planning and drafting for ~ 10 years. Yes - they blew it too by passing on Humphrey. so many mistakes.

and no one is held accountable.

Did they fire the people running the concessions yet? That’s the type of change we can expect from Captain Cliche. At least the fans could get back to their seats before halfway through the 3rd quarter to watch our team attempt to make a comeback of “which they are not built for”.

No way ARII is eating Tomlin's salary because he wouldn't eat Canada's this year. We are stuck with him til it runs out.

It's getting hard to care at this point.
We've had the same glaring issues for years, yet nothing is done. Tomlin has been talking a good game for a very long time, but he doesn't back it up. it appears our ownership no longer has a clue, or maybe they just don't care Stability isn't a good thing on its own. There's nothing good about stability and consistency when those things don't result in achieving the goal. Part of being successful means making changes when it's required, not sticking with the same things and same people over and over.

We've become a bit of a laughing stock around the league. The Rooney name used to mean something. What the hell does it mean now? We have become a joke, not because we suck, but because we suck and we don't do what's necessary to fix it.

I didn't watch the game on Sunday and probably won't watch next weeks game either. I have no problem cheering for a losing team. I've been doing it my whole life as a Maple Leafs fan, but the team has to at least try to win. The Steelers ownership don't appear to be trying anymore.

Might be better to stand in line a whole quarter than watching the game. I've seen people leave at halftime and come back with 8 min to go in the 4th due to the lines

My son and I went to the Las Vegas game and at halftime I went to the beer line which was about 20 people deep and sent him to the food line that was about 80 deep. As I was paying for my beer he showed up with pizza and I said I can’t believe you already got food. He said this ain’t Heinz Field.

And it will be hard to hire a decent OC if Tomlin is a lame duck

Nice try in using my words against you, but in terms of value, a fourth rounder to move up in the first is a bargain. They ended up recouping that fourth-rounder by moving down in the third, which got them Herbig. Blowing that out of proportion is where you showed a lack of understanding of how the draft works and how teams build.

There were other options if they had just stayed at 17, but cornerback and offensive line were the most pressing issues. Also, the best values were clearly Gonzalez or Jones. I admit this is speculation, but I am certain that they had to agree to pass on Gonzalez to get the Patriots to trade with them. If they refuse, New England keeps the pick to take Gonzalez and the Jets likely take Jones, leaving the Steelers without either of the two truly elite corners and any of the four elite tackles. Yes, taking Jones was going to require some patience. I understand wanting an immediate impact, but they need to start putting more resources into the line. Jones was a step in that direction. The increased focus on the lines does seem to be a primary difference between Khan and Colbert.

That may have been Colbert's biggest failing in recent years. The problem with taking Harris wasn't the player, it was not having a strong enough line for him. It's a waste of his skill set. Passing on Humphrey really set them back. Actually, you can go back farther. They could have had Biadasz instead of McFarland. He isn't Humphrey, but he is the solid center they don't have right now. It goes back to the same flaw in philosophy, something you can definitely lay at Tomlin's feet as well as Colbert's.

I have no problem with fans being negative. Often, I'm negative. The Steelers deserve plenty of negative right now.

Once someone stops watching the games, as shaner said he has done, I stop taking them seriously as a fan.

Exactly. I was too young to truly appreciate the '70s. I really started watching more closely in the early '80s, so I understand what it is to follow the Steelers when they are bad. I've been angry, sad, frustrated, and disgusted. What I've never done is miss a game when I didn't have to. Not even once.

Never thought I would see another decade like Steelers had in the 80's... but it's starting to look that way. Actually, Steelers won playoff games in '84 and '89. So the 20's have been extra crap-tacular so far.

Tomlin will be ripped if he doesn't announce the firing of Matt Canada during the press conference, and he will deserve every bit of criticism he gets.

Nope, not permanently. Never said I was. But when something comes up on Sundays now, I'm not going to go out of my way to prioritize Steeler games anymore. I've been doing it my whole life. Next weekend is Thanksgiving. Once upon a time I would have watched the game no matter what. Now I'll spend the day with family instead.

I didn't think you were leaving the board, but if you aren't bothering to watch the games, I find it difficult to take your opinion of the game seriously. My daughter wears Steelers' tee shirts and sweatshirts. She has a Terrible Towel. She does not watch the games. She checks results here and there on social media. On some level, she cares how they do, but I wouldn't take her contributions to a discussion of the team seriously.

You can think whatever you want. I've been a regular poster on this site for as long as anyone. I've been to many Steelers games, both home and away. I have thousands of dollars in Steelers memorabilia. I'm as big a fan as anyone. i will never give up on the team, but if they can't be bothered to care right now, why should I? The reality is I still care, but once upon a time I would have chosen the Steelers over thanksgiving dinner with my family. That's not the case next week.

I don't care about losing, but at least try. Running the same dog **** coaches out there year after year isn't trying. Refusing to adapt when the current system isn't working isn't trying. They're accepting mediocrity.

Tomlin mouthed the words "Oh changes are going to happen" only because he knows it's the appropriate thing to say after such a debacle of this season. But as you say, what changes? The concession stand people will be fired? What about the OC who was hired primarily because he gave his son a scholarship to MD? How about him? Oh, that doesn't fit into his "old boy buddy, quid pro quo" world of the Steelers? I despise that this team operates in this way since Tomlin has been coach.

Bob, why doesn't someone in the press room ask Tomlin if Canada giving his son Dino a scholarship at Maryland, has anything to do with Tomlin not firing Canada... because that's the only conceivable reason why Canada still has a job in the NFL.

I didn't say you weren't a fan any more. I was careful not to say that. My daughter is a fan, too, but if you aren't watching the games, it makes it hard to take what you have to say about the team seriously. So does this claim that they don't care. It is lazy, made-up nonsense. Question their priorities. Question their decisions. Those things are fair. You can't possibly know if they care or not, but the most likely case is that they do, but they are making bad decisions, such as allowing loyalty to blind them to the need for change. That has been a failing of every generation of the Rooney family since the team was founded, though Dan Rooney was the best at overcoming it, and it is a failing of Tomlin.

Be angry and I'll respect it. Criticize them and I'll respect it. Stop watching? I respect that choice, too, but your thoughts about the team don't mean nearly as much if you choose it.
