I would agree. Lot of things happened they didn't expect. Big difference not knowing that You won't have Your starting Qb, and being able to prepare without one.

Tomlin is criticized a lot here (#firetomlin) but he did an incredible job that year. He should've been named coach of the year IMO.

I might join some other posters questioning if he's overrated, but that year he definitely earned his pay.

It was without a doubt his best coaching season and a reason that if he were canned tomorrow he'd have a new job somewhere else as a HC in the NFL by Independence day, warts and all.

When you go 8-8 with a QB room of Duck Hodges, Mason Rudolph and Paxton Lynch that is simply amazing. I thought last season he also had a good coaching year. They were 2-6, lost TJ Watt for several games, had Najee hobbled for the first half of the year, had a rookie QB and still finished with a winning record. That's pretty darn good.

Honestly I was really looking to moving on from Tomlin until the 2019 season changed My mind, last year reinforced it. I believe He's a better coach than some give Him credit for. That's 2 seasons I've seen that most head coaches would have had a under 500 season, and people would have given them excuses, but when Tomlin still wins , or stays above losing with the same stuff .....You got to hear how He sucks by some.

    Agreed

But isn’t the goal to win in the post season and get to the super bowl and win

It is a tough call on Tomlin. I sure can see both side of the coin.

    This.

Even as a Tomlin Supporter, the whole "No Losing Seasons" Schtick has run its course. Two aspects about his Coaching Performance can be true.

1.) No Coach has had as much consistency starting out their career like Mike Tomlin

2.) No Coach has been bumped out of the playoffs in such a fashion within the last several years like Mike Tomlin.

At some point in time, winning even one Playoff Game would help his record of non losing seasons have even more weight behind it. Becoming Divisional Champs with an AFC Championship Berth along with a Second Year QB?! That would be much better!! :drinks:

    Good post. I agree.

I don’t watch national media much at all anymore. Mostly Steelers podcasts and local sports radio in NYC.

Does his poor playoff stat in the last bunch of years get much play in the convos?

I know the never having a losing season does. Only two without Ben. A third might make me drop the Roethlisberger asterisk.

Yes of course.. again I point to our division, and the last time We went We faced the best Qb in the league....You know the Guy with 2 MVPS, and 2 SB wins already....against a Old OL, and a old Ben, and a rookie RB....with a rookie OC. Not exactly the team to face 1st. I guarantee nobody wants to face KC 1st in the playoffs. I don't want to face KC 1st now. LoL

That one I didn't expect to come close to winning. The one that really got under the skin of every Steeler fan I know was Jags in the Burgh. I was with a group of fellow fans that fateful day and I got so PO'd after the 1st qtr. I walked out.

we haven't won a playoff game since 2017. That's going on six years. I never said he sucks. He's a good coach that will always be that. A good coach. He's not a great coach. He's had the talent for years to not have a losing season. That's not enough anymore. The Steelers have higher standards than most teams in the NFL. If you're content with not winning a playoff game in six years that's great. He just doesn't seem to be able to get this team over the hump since he took over from Cowher. I don't think Cowher was a great coach either. Cowher didn't have a great QB to work with but part of that's on him. He should have tried to get the management of this team to get him a good QB. You can have as many winning seasons as you want but the goal is to win superbowls and win playoff games.

You can believe what You want....it's Your life. I'll ask again. Name Me 4 HCs right now better...., and before You say A. Reid.....what was His record in the playoffs against Tomlin before Pat Mahomes??? And nobody is asking Him to get rid of P. Mahomes, but by God it sure helps to have the for sure best QB in the league.....not 2nd best, or 3rd, but best.
Now go ahead, and answer the Question.

how about tomlin having Ben for his whole career? Not a bad way to be set up for success? I will say Andy Reid is better. Nick Siriani is going to be a very good head coach. Sean Payton is also a very good coach. Zac Taylor for the Bengals looks to have finally solved the issues in Cincinnati. Matt LeFluer I would rank higher at this point as well. Seam McVey is doing a great job. All of those coaches have proven they know how to coach an offense in the NFL. Maybe Tomlin has hurt himself with his hires of coordinators but that's on him. No playoff wins since 2017. How do you explain that? Look at the talent he's had to work with and you have to admit he's under performed. But if non losing seasons are you barometer of success then he's your guy. Tomlin is now 8 -9 in the postseason. A record much like Tony Dungy had. He's an average coach. Don't know why you're so upset because I never said he sucked. He's a GOOD coach. Anyway you're right it's my life.

I'm not upset My Friend. I promise....., but I find it funny Your choice of coaches....Andy Reid almost 20 years, and No SB wins before Mahomes.....Sean P.....that's funny also....1 SB, and had Brees his whole career.....S. McVey....won nothing until they sold the whole future for one win, and then went 5 - 12....LoL....what has Matt L won.....,, or Zak Taylor???? Hell Tomlin out coached Taylor even without Ben. Also .....even though I'm a huge...huge....huge Ben fan.....He has never been the best Qb in the league....He's been top 3, or 5, but never number 1....like Andy Reid has right now.
What do You think Tomlin would do with the very best Qb in the league??? We've seen what He's done with the 3rd- 5th.
You are saying Guys that Tomlin has beaten....even without Ben. Except for I have the Best Qb in the league A. Reid.....So....Make that make sense .
    Again ...
Not a HOF Coach out there that hasn't lost playoff games.
