Behind Pat Freiermuth, who is our number 2 TE? While Connor Heyward was great in this role and was an unexpected surprise the last half of the season, I don't know he is a number 2. It may be addressed in the draft, but I would consider bringing back Jesse James. He was consistent and showed potential. He may not be a number 1 TE in this league, but he could definitely fill a void of Freiermuth is injured for a game or needs a breather.

Maybe a 1 year deal for vet minimum with incentives. He is clearly headed downhill ever since he left here for the big payday with Detroit. He's been maybe 3rd stringer at CLE and CHI. Then with the bicep injury, I'd be really cautious with his ability to be an effective blocker. There are better options for TE depth. I'd re-sign a younger and healthier Gentry for a year than bring back JJ.

They should re-sign Gentry because they need a strong in-line blocker at tight end, but he can't replace Freiermuth as a No. 1 tight end. Maybe they draft one at 32. There are quite a few good ones in this draft.

Why shouldn’t the team consider Heyward as no. 2?

There have been a number of players who left in free agency and came back a few years later. I can't think of any who played as well during their 2nd stint as they did when we originally had them though.

It's easy to think back fondly at JJ's time with the Steelers, but that guy is gone. He's older now with more wear and tear on his body. You can't build a team based on nostalgia so Jessie James is a hard pass for me.

Gentry is not going anywhere, so there is really no reason to do anything until after the draft.

While I really like Heyward, I only have a slight concern about his height at 5'11". He definitely makes up for it with his ability to get open.

No 5th and 6th this year hurts for these sort of picks.

Maybe they use their 4th rd pick on one but I’d probably just bring Gentry back.

If they are really planning on ground and pound this year as their identity then maybe grab Macs guy in the 3rd. Extra lineman to help pave the way for the ground game that can also post up in the passing game.

darnell Washington with the first pick of the second round cures our ills there.

Little rich for my blood. I’m hoping to see the first three picks be some variation of DL, OL, CB, S.

Although If Jack Campbell is sitting there at 32 I think you have to do that.

And......? I am just saying there is no need to sign Gentry until after the draft.

The BPA player available in the mid rounds may be a TE A Steelers TE taken in rounds 3-5 would probably be an immediate upgrade over Gentry.

No offense to Gentry, but there are not many TEs in the league that are worse than him. Gentry can check the box that he is familiar with the current offense, but that is about it.

Right now, he is a free agent. Maybe there won't be much demand for him, but right now they are thin at the position.

There is some people on this board that would lose their mind, if they went LT at #17 and TE at #32.

I could be very happy with that. :) Could be one of the best offensive lines in football.

We already have a jack cambell in Holcomb. As it stands te is the biggest need heading into the draft. As much as this team runs 12 personnel we need another stud te.

I do find it funny that the Steelers have both the tallest (Gentry 6-8) and shortest (Heyward 6-0) tight ends in the NFL.

STD would lose his mind if that happened :lolol:, that would mean they passed on some good CBs.

William Gay was actually a better player when he returned to the Steelers.

I would pass on Jesse James returning, re-sign Gentry or get one in the draft the position is deep.
