Spillane might be as good as he can be which is fine as long as he is mostly used as a run stopper, in coverage he can still be exposed.

I can't deny he gets and gives everything he has talent wise with effort and making smart reads.

You can't help but hope for success for these high motor middle of the road talent kind of guys.

I could see him having a future in coaching. Most of the best coaches in almost any major sport are not former superstars but the guys that had to work and study to stay on the field, ice or court.

I like Spillane. It is hard not to root for the guy and he certainly knows what he his doing out there.

Unfortunately, it isn't just in the passing game that he hurts the Steelers. His lack of quickness also hurts them on runs to the outside. He just can't get there in pursuit. That is part of why the Ravens ran outside so much and had most of their success running the ball to the outside.

In Spillane's defense, all of our ILBs pass coverage skills suck.

A large percentage of players after a knee injury get back to playing at a high level. He has not. Maybe he is just soft? Worrying to much about injuring it again? But when he takes bad angles, gets swallowed up, stands there while he could have made a play, and gets burned in coverage their is more to the story then the injury. It's between the ears. He will take his fragile psyche to another team.

It's hard not to like a LB name Spillane. The only think better would be a LB named "Splatkowski" or "Sacovich" or something.

Spillane will be on this team and he is a guy you want to be on this team - Big heart with lots of football smarts, a blue-collar LB in his 4th season.
    Just not as a starter.

Your run stopping linebackers should lead the team in tackles if they are doing their job.

Spillane is a pretty smart player, but he is a between the tackles linebacker. Down hill.. ham and egger..

Not a guy you want out in space or in coverage...

1st off, our ILB'ers should not be covering WR's. they should be able to cover most TE's and RB's out of the backfield.

Robert is a great back-up--- but I don't think he is good enough to be our starter. Best look for a good ilb in draft or free agency. And Devin bush--- get him out of here.

Could be fear. Those bad angles are likely compensation to not stretch out too much. In the NFL, a half a second is too much. If he can't mentally just go all out and not worry about it, it's unlikely he will ever play again after a stint or two elsewhere.

But honestly....we don't have a ILB, or a SS that are starting that can cover most TEs.

i don't agree with that. i had put up a video from moats that showed how well spillane was playing the pass just being in the right spots. waller was held pretty much in check. these TE's get paid too. we are not going to stop these guys completely. we ask a lot from our LB'ers in certain defenses. you give in one scenario but take away in another by doing this. scheme is a big downfall of our LB'ers and DB's at times in the defense we run. we are so predicated on our front getting pressure that it makes the guys behind look worse than maybe they really are. just adding watt back to the pass rush has shown this. without him we really looked bad. with more pressure, everyone behind them looks better. two down linemen also put's a lot of pressure on the LB'ers in the run game. containment from the OLB'ers also makes the ILB'ers look slow to the ball. it's a give in one spot but take in another. the ILB'ers are in focus in both scenarios. we kind of tie their hands a lot with our defensive schemes. that's my opinion of it anyway.

That's the way it was suppose to be a great back-up. but for now he is our best middle linebacker, and it's not close. like it has been said, none are good in pass defense.

Spillane has always been great against the run, so it shouldn’t be a shock he would shine against a team like the Ravens.

He struggles big-time in pass coverage though. Against any team with a halfway decent QB he’s a major liability in any kind of cover situation.

    Again....name a ILB/MLB on this team that isn't, or a SS.

He's not great against the run. He diagnoses plays well and usually makes the tackle if the play comes right at him, but he is a liability in pursuit. The Ravens took advantage of that with the runs off tackle and outside.

STD, he is more of a liability in coverage than most.

I like Spillane. He's tough and intelligent. He makes great reads. He just isn't athletic enough.

Appears You haven't watched Bush. I'd take Spillane over Bush everyday. Yes Bush is more athletic.....so freaking what.
Edmunds is an athletic freak.....sure has helped Him. LoL. Give Me a Guy with heart....will..., and some knowledge of how to play over a athletic player that has only ,and always been reliant on their so called talent.
Lot of OLB that are way more physically talented than Watt....
    Doesn't make them better.

Draft this guy to replace Spillane, he's more athletic, and he would get to wear the same uniform colors :hehehe:.

I think the majority are looking forward to showing Bush his future job opportunities he feels so readily will be available to him.

I give him 2 years bouncing from team to team before he washes up and can't find a job.

That is a straw man argument. I never said I would prefer a player who only has athleticism. Athleticism alone doesn't make someone a good player, either. You need both the mental and physical aspects of the game. I would rather see Spillane out there over Bush, too, but that's a really low bar. Neither of them is a guy you want starting for you. Nothing you wrote counters the fact that Spillane isn't just a liability in coverage, he is a liability in run defense when teams attack the edges of the Steelers' defense. He just can't get out there in pursuit fast enough.

I had the pleasure of watching his career at Iowa. While he is athletic and a beast in the run game, I don't know that he can run with elite NFL tight ends or RBs one on one. Dropping into space and reacting is one thing but you'll find his coverage skills will come up as a weakness.
