I read on NFL.COM that Monte Kiffin wants to come back to the NFL. Now I know that Butler is Dick's successor but I was just curious of people's opinions about him. IF the Rooney's decided to go with an outside hire would you be opposed to them looking at Kiffin? Also didn't him and Tomlin work together at Tampa? I wonder if Tomlin would like to have him and might try and persuade the Rooney's to get him. Or let's just say for a second that Butler is not in the picture. Do you think then that the Rooney's would try and get him and would you be opposed to it? I'm just asking. It seems we always have threads like this so I figured I'd get in on all the "what if" action. Please don't hate me.

They aren't going to go outside. Butler is LeBeau's successor.

I agree. I wish we could get him for something though. He does know D. I'm sure he's gonna get a coordinator job though. Maybe if Gruden goes to Philly instead of coming to Knoxville to coach the vols that's where he will go. I personally don't think Gruden is coming to Knoxville and wouldn't be surprised if he went to Philly or San Diego. If Gruden went to SD and hired Kiffin then he'd be next to his son still so that could actually make sense I suppose. But I would like to have someone of Kiffin's caliber on our team for sure.

I want Keith Butler and it better be Butler because other wise it means he got screwed big time and that's not the Steelers style. But in the spirit of your "what if", how about Rex Ryan? Not sure he will still have a job after this season but who knows, apparently Woody Johnson loves him.

I agree and Buter has been sitting under Dick LeBeau. No doubt he has some Ideas of his own and no way he doesn't pick up on all of Dick's tricks

In Monte Kiffin's last two gigs as DC at University of Tennessee and DC at USC working for his son Lane, he hasn't produced top defenses. In fact, the defense at USC has been a big disappointment and the Trojans have very much underachieved. They went from being ranked #1 preseason to pretty much sucking hind tit. So, he hasn't exactly been building a stellar resume over the past 5 years. Not sure that is what you look for in a DC to head up the premier defense in the NFL. Monte's resignation may have been to get out before his son get's fired and he is fired by default.

I was going to say Monte hasnt coached up USCs defense since he has been there, even though he has many more top recruited players to choose from, unfortunately his son Lane isnt head coaching material, he's more of an offensive coordinator than he is a HC. Obviously Monte knows Lane is going to be fired so he is putting out his feelers now before the firing takes place: Monte is old and isnt up to the task anymore, when he left Tampa his defense was a mess and he was looking to bailout, thats why he went to college with his son, we sure dont need him here.........

Yeah, he has had a lot of big time recruits at USC. So when you give up almost 600 yards to AZ and lose 4 of your last 5 games while giving up 178 points, your job is not safe at a big time program like USC. His D gave up 730 yards and 62 points and 321 yards rushing to Barner from Oregon. These were all time records for USC going back over 120 years. Yes he came up with the Tampa 2 but he should have retired after he left TB in a shambles. And he has done nothing but suck since then. We don't need another geritol slugging AARP member who the game has passed by. If Tomlin even mentions Monte Kiffins name, Rooney should smack the dumbness right off his face.

never liked the guy ... maybe it is because they named him the creator of the Tampa 2 def when the reality of it is ( and you can research it ) that def came from Bud Carson and Chuck Nolls playbook and Dungy adopted it yet Kiffin gets the credit and has never been man enough to tell the truth about its origin ... ......

Dungy however is quite specific on where it came from and has given proper credit to such in the past

I wouldn't want him strictly because we'll be replacing somebody the same age who's sailing off into the sunset.

But also, we have our guy, Butler, who has trusted in the Rooney's loyalty in that they basically have promised him to be the heir-apparent to Lebeau. He's passed up other opportunities because he WANTS to be the DC in Pittsburgh, and THAT is the kind of guy I want helping lead our team!

I just told someone this the other day and they told me I was stupid and that I always try to give the Steelers credit for everything! I told them they could call me stupid all they want to but the fact is that Chuck Noll was really the creator of that system.

I didn't realize that Monte sucked so bad in college. I was talking to a guy at work today that's a big Vols fan and he said that he didn't think Monte was good in college but that he was in the NFL. I was just sorta thinking of his days when Tampa was pretty dominant. But from what I've heard on tv Lane Kiffin is safe at USC but they said Monte was DEFINITELY gonna get canned at USC. I don't keep up with college so I didn't know he was that bad there. I also wanna see what Butler can do I was just asking what people thought of him if the situation wasn't what it is.

I don't like Rex Ryan personally so I wouldn't want him either. Now that he's such a media magnet there's no telling what kinda drama he would have ginned up around here. lol. Actually this topic came up a few months ago about Rex and being our DC and I was saying then too that I just don't like the guy.
