True, but we also saw what happens when Edmunds goes down. He's not a superstar stud that everyone wanted, but the guy has turned into a reliable safety that does his job well and allows them to sub others in plus move Minka around for situational football.

This is what I keep waiting for. All this chatter about him be a possible replacement for Tomlin and I haven't seen Flores do anything this year.

I can't even find Flores on the sideline when the game is on. You think they would show some clips of him talking with the defense on the sideline when they are getting their asses handed to them. Is he even on the sideline?

Flores is in the booth with Canada and a few others

Austin is on the sideline handling (or not) your first part

That is as much about not having a viable backup as it is anything he does.

Worth a try, especially in situational conditions, like 3rd and 8 where they play pitch and catch.

I don't feel either of them are calling the defense.

It is very frustrating, the Defense that is.
Tomlin is a defensive minded coach as is much of his staff.
John Mitchell has a ton experience
Austin has been around and held some respect for being a good DB's coach
Jerry Olsavsky has been pretty solid (I liked him as a player and as coach)
    Karl Dunbar is another favorite.
Brian Flores has always been respected a coach (though I agree, not so much as a head coach)

So, there is a lot of Defensive minds on that sideline.

i have never liked olsavsky as a coach. player yes, he was a try hard guy but we haven't really had solid play or consistent play from that spot since he was handed the job.

The thing with Austin he knows Watt is out, the defense needs to blitz more on 3rd downs, they can't get off the field .

Oh this is why it is pitch and catch down the middle in the 8-10 yd range. Please Steelers activate
Robinson and play him this week, Bush and Spillane aren't cutting it.

Robinson looked terrible in pass coverage in preseason. He is a strong tackler, but he wouldn't be an improvement in pass coverage.

Maybe past 5 weeks the great Flores has been coaching him up in pass coverage.
We can't be much worse with him than we are with Bush or Spillane?

I don't know how to type the sound of crickets.

Flores turned Miami's defense around in the second half of last season and from what I have read he is a very good defensive coach.

What is impossible to know is how much input he is having or how much control he has if any at all.

The scheme is terrible NE and the Jets just played catch over the middle.

NE did it so well in the first half and just continued to do it in the second half with no adjustments that I could see from the Steelers.

Buffalo will be a huge challenge but Brady will shred this defense with slants and crossing routes. Brady might go off for 46 of 53 and whatever 6 or 7 times 46 is.

I still have hope not sure why but still hope they win every time the Steelers take the field.

At some point and it might just be a few weeks from now they need to go full out rebuild mode and find out who can play or has potential for next year.

For all of Tomlins so called defensive genius I really don t remember a third rd DB being coached up to be an all pro.

I don t put much stock in power rankings but 29 come on man that's embarrassing.

Anyone awake knows whos in control. And its not working. Austin and Flores are just there. Just like Dadgummit was.

But, but the injuries. Your still paid to make plays. The scheme is the issue as well as coaching. If someone goes down they have no adjustment. If you can't put pressure on the QB then how about some blitzing? How about not having this soft zone that I could make a catch in. The secondary looks confused. Besides Fitzpatrick and Sutton who stands out? There is the cricket sounds.

Bush and Spillane are brutal. Thank goodness we have Jack. How about giving Robinson some snaps? Can't hurt. But but he can't cover. Neither can Bush or Spillane

And again we have no answer at OLBer besides Watt and Highsmith.

And the D Line is not a bright spot either.

We will see when Watt comes back(which rumor has it that it won't be against Tampa) if things do change. But right now this defense which was supposed to be the strength of this team is a weakness.

That last part is true, but exactly what adjustment should they make to cover for Watt and most of the secondary being hurt?

They have tried adjustments to cover for Watt. They tried Leal out there. They tried playing Heyward wider. The problem there is the players. You were right in saying they don't have a viable outside linebacker behind Watt and Highsmith. That is front office, not scheme.

Jack has been strong against the run, but he was part of the problem in the pass defense last week. He wasn't dropping deep enough and the Jets kept taking advantage on those passes over the middle.
