At this point, the presumed starting quarterback for your Pittsburgh Steelers, Mitch Trubisky, has been outplayed by both Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph in the pre-season.

Just for balance, Jack, I don’t think any of the QBs have significantly outplayed the others.

I think you asked a non NFL watching citizen who didnt know the QBs at all, and asked them which one seemed the most professional, they would say Pickett.

Ike Taylor said after the game last night that it is going to be very difficult for Tomlin to start Trubisky over Pickett in week one against the Bengals.

Well he did start the game. Meaning better starters on both sides. Pickett was only in for one drive yesterday.

He also scrambled best from our horrible line. And pickett took a hot last night and I think that's why they yanked him..... and our line it's cap, so it's probably to go with the best scrambler.

Rudolph forces plays. It's not bad he goes for the long ball and sometimes gets int. Happened to a lot of the greats. But trubisky I haven't seen a play I felt would get picked.

Pretty sad that a guy who was the 2nd player drafted overall and 1st QB taken (ahead of Mahomes & Watson) in 2017 is now on his 3rd team in 5 years and struggling to win a starting job against a rookie and a lifelong backup.

I was hoping Mitch would show us something but at this point, I'm starting to agree that they might as well start Kenny. Not enough separating the 3, so just go with the guy you think will be your future franchise guy. Although I still have serious doubts that Pickett is that guy.

It’s been a close competition for sure. I guess my point is that it seems that Trubisky was pre-ordained to be the starter and in all likelihood will be at the start of the season. But IF that’s the case, was it really an open competition for the starting job?

Trubisky hasn’t played terribly, but he looks a little stiff compared to Pickett. He didn’t help himself last night. He seemed pre-occupied by the rush and ready to bail if his primary target was covered. Pickett, on the other hand, kept his eyes downfield, got rid of the ball quickly and delivered several big time throws, some of those with defenders in his grill.

We really need a running game. Our opponent stops the run we will have a hard time winning the game. Najee is a damn good running back if the O-line gives him a chance. Having the opposition worry about our run game will be a huge plus for whoever is under center.

Rudolph played against backups in the first game and guys who will be bagging groceries in a couple of weeks last night. Trubisky played against starters. Even with that, Rudolph did not outplay him against the Seahawks and he still had some glaring mistakes last night despite the pretty stat line.

Rudolph is the worst QB of this roster....Never he would been able to break a few sacks like Trubisky in the first 2 preseason game....Trubisky has avoided like 3 sacks yesterday and 1 sack vs Seattle. And Rudolph is way too safe as QB.I am sick and tired to watch him play.He attempts so few pass past the yellow line for the first down

The inconvenient truth is that the O line sucks. Regardless of your opinion of KP (I’m a big fan) against teams in the regular season, playing him would be akin to throwing him to the wolves. Trubiski will take a beating. IMHO, some time on the bench will help KP develop.

Yes I think it would be a bit unfair on KP to put him in too early behind this line. Mitch is good at avoiding pressure and seems to be able to manage the offence well enough. I think you have to roll with him and see what happens.

That said, if the offence struggles there will be tremendous pressure from the fan base to get Pickett in there.

I don't know if I agree that time on the bench helps him develop. As has been said, Pickett was the most NFL ready QB in this years draft. He had a ton of experience from college and the only way to make the jump to NFL speed, I believe, is by actually playing in it.

Also, he has the same jumping off point with regards to learning the playbook as Trubisky. The only thing the other two have on Pickett is reading defenses in game speed. Again, that has to be learned from in game experience. If he was more raw, I would agree but the way he has looked so far, I would like to see them start him.

    +1.

Rewatching the Trub drives from yesterday, I'm not so sure Trub is reading defenses any better than KP anyways... twice on the first drive, Trub should have thrown, but held on and had to escape the rush.

I think the combo of a gun shy QB and a horrific OL is real bad...

I’m just worried the O line will stunt his development. Let them figure it out at the beginning of the season. Then, give him opportunities when the time is right.

I think Pickett should start as well. Trubisky hasn’t been terrible by any stretch but as someone said above not enough separation from both of them I think for me to just wanna hand Trubisky the job since he has more experience. Pickett has looked better and we’ll see if he plays against Detroit next week but right now he has earned the starting job from what I have seen and if Tomlin starts him against the Bengals in week 1 I’d have no problem at all with it.

Pickett needs to start this week. If he wows, Trubisky starts vs. the Bengals, but Pickett comes in if the offense is stagnant.

The atrocious O line and run defense is why we will suck this year. However, Steelers are doing the right things but they need to stock on O line/D line next 2 drafts. I let Kenny settle in the back and start Turdsbisky. He is basically mason but he can run. I keep Mason for now as the backup because he knows the team. I don't agree with experts that Kenny has a low ceiling. He has already shown me he can thrive and grow some more.

2 of those 3 He had wide open target, but was watching the rush instead of throwing it, and had 2 take off. Go watch.

Problem with that is when will the time be right...Hypothetically if He was on the team last year would You wanted 2 start Him with that OL...no ....probably not....now this Year the OL is the same...maybe a bit better....what I'm getting at is....We can always find excuses not 2 start Him....if He's good He will succeed....if not people that love Him will say He started 2 early...like they do with every Qb they thought should be good that wasn't.
I have always believed...if You are good ....You will be good(terrible injury not withstanding). Look at Bradshaw, Troy Aikman, and Payton Manning just 2 name a few....they all took their lumps on terrible teams, but they were good ,and ended up proving it.
Let Pickett have the same opportunity.
