from reading that story it sounds like we are just not trusting who we have right now. same as when DL was here. year two should help but i'm still worried about the safety spot in this defense. davis should improve and stafford may help, but mitchell is going the other way soon. it may be very interesting what they do with hilton and allen and the safety spot. does anyone think those two could be viable players to move to that spot eventually?

Safety is my biggest worry too. Although if we can finally start to generate some good pressure up front again it could help the back end look a lot better.

pressure helps. coverage also helps pressure. instincts, reads, speed, range are all big helps from the safety spot. lots of work to do in camp with our youth. allen especially. i can't wait to see what we do with this kid.

That's the thing with Mitchell though Mac, for all the talk abut him breaking down film and being a smart guy, the way it translates on the field is that he reacts instead of diagnosing the play and attacking. Too often he is indecisive and covers up for it by attempting to make the big hit. When Troy was still on the team many blamed him for roaming all over and leaving Mitchell out to dry, but after Troy was cut Mitchell still gets caught trying to figure out who to cover and who is a threat and often times staring into the backfield when he is playing centerfield 20 yards up field away from the running back. He isn't the worst safety but I think they could stand to upgrade the position this next season for sure.

So true, but also even when he does diagnose and reacts he doesn't have the range or quickness to go sideline to sideline like a true centerfielder.

Some other interesting bits from the article, for those who see the headline and froth at the mouth...

    - Across the NFL, teams ran a man coverage only 34.9% of the time. No team ran man coverage more than 50% of their snaps.
    - One team came close at around 49% - Lebeau's Titans. (That Lebeau, stuck in his ways, never changes etc. etc.)
    - The league as a whole averages at 59& of snaps in zone coverage. Steelers lined up in zone around 75% of the time.

    And just for extra info:
    - The top 3 teams to run man coverage were the Titans, Chiefs and Cardinals. In terms of overall defense, they were 20th, 24th and 2nd respectively.
    - Top 3 teams to run zone were Panthers, Steelers and Bengals - 21st, 12th and 17th respectively in overall defense.

They should play zone coverage, it is very effective, where they need to tighten it up and play more man is in the redzone.

the ability to mix it up at a moments notice is where they want to be. DL ran it the most because he had the players to do it. we have to teach it and trust them.

i agree thorn and JAD about mitchell. i hope they work with some others at his spot this year in the preseason. davis, hilton, allen. stafford at SS with davis at FS could be a useful tool. i do agree range and diagnostics have never been his strong suite. with the rule changes, he will now have to watch those big hits or face suspension from the game and if so we will have to be ready to cover that.

Did they also happen to have a stat showing Brady's numbers vs zone? They might have destroyed the interweb. LOL!

    From NFL Analysis:

Brady is at his best when picking zone coverages apart.

It’s often said that good quarterbacks can beat you before the snap, and this is never more evident than when facing and diagnosing zone coverages. While Brady might not have an extremely strong arm to fit balls into tight windows in man coverage, he is still one of the best at finding holes in zone coverages. As a result, his completion percentage was just 57 percent in 2015 against coverage schemes relying more on man coverage (cover-1 and cover-2 man). However, he completed 66 percent of his passes on plays where the defense relied more on zone schemes (cover-2, cover-3, cover-4 and cover-6).

    And there is this analysis:

Football is really a simple game, can you beat the man that lines up across from you? Until your
Db's can show that they are able to cover receivers in a a man to man situation, we will continue to struggle.
