Would you give Pouncey a second contract?

I've been thinking about this a lot in the last couple of weeks. Pouncey has been called one of the better centers in the league, but I'm not 100% sure I see it. Does he get by on reputation alone?
With his injury history, the team can't afford to pay a player who misses such a significant amount of playing time. Another thing that has me questioning this is the fact that I think Valesco is doing a pretty good job in Pouncey's absence.
So, do you give him a second contract? If so, do you move him to Guard where some feel that he plays better?

I think if it comes to a bidding war the team lets him walk. But, will they get that far or will they extend him in the off season?

my opinion is while he may not be the best in the league he is top three. this oline sucks. keep him. we cant keep letting people go. especially on the oline. we need some continuity there. keep him and velasco. see if pounce is open to moving to guard, and if not see if velasco is. they are two of the three best on the roster with decastro.

Well the injury history is a problem however we cannot afford to let talented o lineman go and his recent injury was totally a bone headed move by another player and not a lack of durability issue but i guess that is debatable.

i'd see how he plays next year and if we have to, make an offer during the season. they just might have to change they're way of doing things to keep up. we have put ourselves behind the 8 ball on too many guys with big contracts that have us strapped and then the play goes south.

velasco plugs the middle and brings some nasty to the line. pouncey may have to see how he plays at guard. with Wallace, velasco, beachum, foster, embernate and DD as interior players, I don't know that I would spend a lot on him. he's got beat up knees and ankles. he can move though.

i agree. Velasco was a pretty good find. maybe Pouncey can move over to gaurd and go from there. if he shows hes healthy and can play there than i say offer him a contract. otherwise use that money somewhere else.

i do think Pouncey was very good in his rookie season at center, but it seems as though hes had a steady decline since.

Yes I would....This team is, and has been lacking Oline talent across the board....you don't let one of the few bright spots walk.

Adams, Pouncey, Decastro, Gilbert, Velasco, Beachum, Foster is a pretty solid base.

You don't get better by getting rid of the TOP of the roster...you get better by getting rid of the bottom.

Yes but make some of it incentive based if possible. Otherwise if that is no longer allowed then you need to keep good players and not let them go. Hopefully they can build around what they have and get better with experience. We need to find that stud LT in the next draft.

the thing that comes into play here though is injuries and how close we are in cap money that holds us up from adding on the O-line and other spots. I truly don't see him wanting to stay anyway. I think he'll be playing next to his brother in the sunshine and his back yard by 2015.

yes it's a solid base but nowhere near where they need to be. i'd keep one of adams and gilbert. the other would be gone after the season. i'd draft a good one and joe long would make the team next year, then one of adams or gilbert would be my RT.

new guy, long and beachum would man the left side. with embernate and wallace and the interior guys we have, we are pretty set with workable guys inside. embernate, beachum, foster, long could all play RT if needed.

Cameron erving, DD, pouncey, velasco, embernate/adams/gilbert would be a nice looking line next year. beachum, wallace, foster, long, and one of embernate/adams/gibert, whomever isn't starting or cut would be my 5th BU. we are not that far off right now.

picking up velasco was huge. getting Wallace, keeping long and embernate was a very good move. I think there is talent amongst these guys without breaking the bank.

Agree wholeheartly with this. We don't need all the help we can get as far as oline talent. Especially if he recovers from this injury.

Absolutely, he's our best lineman, we don't have the luxury of letting talent leave the line. His injuries have been outside the norm, can't pin them on him.

I've just got this nagging feeling that he's taking his talents to South Beach once his contract is up.

I was already leaning towards keeping him, and seeing if we could move him to guard, just from the title of the thread, before I read the initial post.
My question is, how old is Velasco?
does he have another 5+ good years left in him, to keep him with opur other young O-linemen?
Also, I`m not sure exactly how good he has been.
I don`t focus on the line, during the game, but I am impressed, that i haven`t heard/seen him making negative plays, when he came to a new team, and started that week.
    Must be doing something right.
    I heard he was a "journeymn/veteran" center.
Just not sure how long he`s been in the league/ how much mileage left on him?

velasco is 28 and was one of the best center (top ten )in the league almost every year , i'm surprised a lot of people didn't know him , and i was even more surprised when they cut him

Thanx, Freak... That makes it easy.
Keep Pouncey if he is willing to play for a reasonable amount of money, and move to guard.
I don`t think other teams are gonna throw crazy money at him, to pull him away from us.
He was supposed to be so great coming out of college, that I was thinking we found our next Webster/Dawson/Hartings type center.
Not sure he has lived up to that.
    Not that many could.
His injurys are not his fault, but they still put wear and tear on his legs...Making one wonder if he can ever stay durable.
It KILLS me, that his own teammates have been responsible for 2 of the worst ones, but that doesn`t matter.
    The damage is done.
Point being, I doubt if another team is gonna take a high dollar risk on him.
I think we can keep him for a reasonable contract, and he might be even better at guard, than center...
At the very least, if Velasco goes down, we have a damn good back up center in Pouncey...
Assuming we keep both, and let Velasco play center...
I don`t see why not, at this point.
He seems to be more than capable of doing the job...

I would give him a second contract they used a first round pick on him and he's the most talented O-lineman. They should re-sign Velasco and maybe move Pouncey to guard.

Extending Pouncey will depend on how well he recovers from injury and how much money he believes he is worth. Several of Pouncey's injuries were due to bad luck. More then once he had players fall on his ankle/legs.

Pouncey may want to move on from the Steelers and the apparent injury curse that has plagued this team's Oline over the past several seasons.
