I am on record that I would have fired Colbert this off-season. It's hard to know who I would hire because GM candidates are not as available to see as coaching candidates. I know what qualities I want in a GM and being a life long scout or part of the "good old boys club" of ex-GM's floating around isn't what I'm hiring from.

I think Tomlin can deliver an over achieving season, but I would give him the rope to either hang himself or not, particularly with his coaching staff.

    Rooney's are the Rooney's.

Look, Colbert's not useless. He's a very good scout and pro personnel guy. He's exceptional at WR scouting and poor at O-line scouting. But he's just a scout in my opinion and the roll I think a GM has to play is much, much bigger than that.

I wasn't really in favor of the Tomlin hire, but that's water under the bridge. There is not ONE off-season where I am on record that we should have fired Tomlin. I disappointed a bit in his performance, but never to the level of termination.

In a lot of ways, it's the same with Colbert. I express my frustrations with him but I also understand continuity is worth something. This is the first off-season I would have fired him.

Note, I was on record as firing Arians one year before he was actually fired as well.

i just dont see how we are going ot have a great year and go deeep in the playoffs? why? to me we picked up about what we lost in FA this off season.. we got munch at OL coach .. so i grade our FA off season maybe a c+..... as i said and will say we could go 11-5 or 5-11 and i wouldnt be shocked.. we will lose at least 5.. we will win at least 5... the other 6 will be the make or break... my guess is we wont win all 6 or lose all 6 .. probably go more like 9-7 8-8 or 7-9 .. but how are people seeing the team that went 8-8 the last 2 seasons going deep in the playoffs.. what have we do to improve so much .. i hope im wrong.. love to hoist the 7th lombardi .. but i just dont see it ...

If I was a boss and I was evaluating Tomlin's performance, he has had 2 seasons of overachieving with the talent he has (2008 and 2010). He has one season that's a wash (overachieve in regular season only to greatly underachieve in postseason - 2011). His first season (2007) was statistically an underachieving season, but not by much and you might give him some leeway as a rookie with a learning curve (might). He has underachieved based on the roster in my opinion in 2009, 2012 and 2013.

    To me, that's his resume.

Do I blame Colbert for not giving Tomlin better rosters/players to work with? Yes. That's a different evaluation process.

All I know is with the roster as given him, I don't think Tomlin is doing as well as some here tout. As with Tom Coughlin, it's tough to separate successful seasons vs. unsuccessful seasons when the successful seasons result in a Super Bowl victory. How many bad seasons does one Super Bowl victory counteract for a coach in his evaluation? That's a question everyone probably answers differently.

As I said above. Since his hire, there is not one off-season I would have terminated his employment. He always seems to bounce back enough to say it'd be better to keep him than rock the boat and make a change (which might not yield better results - that is always a possibility).

But I will say if Tomlin has another underachieving season, I would strongly consider letting him go next off-season rather than continue to hang on with what started out as down/up/down/up/down/up and seems to be trending towards more downs.

I agree that he has had some seasons that left a lot to be desired but I guess I look at it differently. I always put more blame on the players than the coach. with injuries and what seemed to be some players who didn't give a crap its hard for me to blame the coach.

saying that you cant fire a bunch of players so the coach is ultimately held responsible. I think this is his last shot to turn it around this year. some of us were talking the other day and it seems that after their big contracts lately that ben, Timmons, and brown are the only ones who stepped up their play. ike and Woodley fell off. troy didn't stay healthy and Wallace didn't even want one here. or at least he didn't play like he did. its those kind of reasons that I cant blame tomlin.

I know some players who laugh every time that the media blames coaches for lack of effort or not having his team ready to play. they laugh because the rah-rah speeches and coaches who try to motivate them quit working in college. its all about the cash. some say if that's what it takes to get you to play hard and give your all the you will never make it to the nfl to start with. its an inner drive that cant be taught.

So you support paying $7 million to our third OT and then watching him ride the pine? That's the way you think we should do business?
