He wasn't a bad coach. He just was a pretty bad GM. IMO

I don't want a losing season, but I realize in order to even have a decent chance at a franchise QB you have to be drafting very high in Round 1. How many QBs have we had already since Ben retired, 5?

The Chiefs didn't have a top 5 pick when they drafted Mahomes, they traded up to pick #11 IIRC.

 

We already have a clipboard holder in Kyle Allen .

 

Generally speaking and of course a top pick guarantees you nothing. Just drafting in the 20's every year really diminishes your chances at a franchise QB. Wasn't 6 QBs taken early in Round 1 last draft. Still that guarantees nothing but a chance.

good call.....and this notion that we need a top 5 pick is nuts. PLENTY of strong QB's over the years that were not top 5 or top 10, for that matter.

Tomlin cannot nor has not shown the ability to develop a QB or an offense , for that matter.

 

Even that is not a guaranteed franchise QB. Overwhelming evidence that you need a perfect storm of front office talent, coaching staff, scouting staff, and the player. It also proves that the parity that the league likes to brag about is not as substantial as they think it is. The Browns, Commanders, and Lions have been perennial top ten in picks and have left football fields strewn with wasted QB's, RB's, Edge Rushers, LT's, DT's and CB's. Yet they continue to lose and find themselves drafting at the top year after year.

True and one thing that works in the Steelers favor over other franchises(or it should) is that the stability in the front office and coaching means that they are drafting according to an established plan. My personal opinion if Tomlin had a more ironclad philosophy it might make things better in drafting. It is always amazing to watch an owner higher a coach give them two years of drafting then firing that staff and hiring the flavor of the month in coaching whose philosophy doesn't fit his players and then starts the cycle all over again.

 

The GOAT was a 6rd pick, Purdy was picked dead last. Dont know why a lot of you think that you have to have a top 5 pick to get a franchise qb. Have you witnessed the failures in the last couple of yrs of top drafted qbs?

 

We had losing seasons between Bradshaw, and Ben..., and how many Qbs did we have between them??? How many Qbs are taken in the 1st round, and amount to nothing???

correct - and PLENTY of franchise QB's have been found beyond the top 5 pick, as Patty Mahomes most recently illustrates.

If they cant see, never will. There might be one or 2 drafted this year in top 12 as qb that will succeed. Lets tank so we can get a top 5 pick, horse -****. But i know nothing about football.

I lived in Baltimore most of my life, recently moved. They drafted Lamar. Was not a new Flacco, by any measure. Harbaugh was close to getting fired, gambled and put Lamar in. Then they went to build around him. Saved his career and the Ravens will compete for a while while Lamar is healthy.

Sure - we handle him, but he / they give fits to most of the league.

 

This… you also have to have the staff to coach qb to the next level.
