And what has Watt done in the playoffs to help the team get closer to the Super Bowl?

The practice squad accounts for about $3.5M. And the team routinely carries $10M into the season as a safety net for in season additions or any other backend costs. But the majority of incentives with Rodgers would be considered NLTBE (Not Likely to Be Earned), and in conjunction with their amounts would just be pushed to 2026 if he happened to earn them.

Dead money is largely irrelevant to the cap in the sense that you're using it - just because a player who is cut may generate dead money doesn't mean it negatively impacted the team's cap. Plenty of players create dead money if cut, but still represent a net savings for the team overall.

Just getting up to speed here. Does TJ's contract go through the end of this upcoming season? If so, does TJ become UFA at the end of the season without an extension? Is franchise tag next off season an option? Seems like now would be the time to trade if the Steelers want to get something in return vs him just leaving at end of the season. I suppose he could pull a Lev Bell and sit out the season too.

TJ has battled injuries and has disappeared a few times when they really needed him and seems to be on the downside of his career. 1 or 2 seasons of quality football seems to be about all he's got left. Heading into season 9 and his brother played 11 with similar injury story. Maybe trade to get something for him now or let him play out his contract this season, tag him next season, then cut bait?

Well he plays a big roll getting them there. Would be nice if the rest of the team could pull their weight so it’s not always all on him.

Agree to an extent. I could care less how much money the Billionaire Rooney spends but if they cave to him and give him a huge contract it likely hurts roster building for years to come.

Exactly what I was going to say.
I keep reading about people saying He is doubled in the playoffs, and I agree, but then shouldn't someone else be helping out . I mean If I'm taking on two guys people, shouldn't you be winning your one ,on ones???

No. He won’t stay. Reports on fb are that he just stormed into Kahn’s office and demanded a trade. That created a total ****storm and now Benton and Heyward have fooled suit. The season is over. No more non losing seasons. Tomlin has been fired and the mental midgets have started rejoicing

no i get that there is a savings and just how much saving depends on the player that is cut. the ideal savings comes from guys that generate 0 dollars when cut. scotty miller is one of those. skylar thompson. corliss waitman. those are some $0 guys but you do have to replace them too and add two more to the 53 man roster. those 3 alone are the top 51 as it sits if they are cut. so as i said there won't be a great deal of money left. we may end up with 7-9 mil. to play with before the season once everything is said and done.

You don't have to replace them and add - positionally they're already on the outside looking in. Thompson in the QB4, Waitman backs up Johnston, and Miller is the WR6 (they only kept five last year). And replacing anyone on the top 51 with someone below it is going to save money. Enough to cover the two you add at 52 & 53.

I made the mistake of going shopping with two of my neighbors once(both female). I needed a new suit and they needed whatever. So we’re doing our thing and one of them goes to try on a skirt. Now this woman she wasn’t ugly or fat. However, she just didnt have the legs to pull off wearing the skirt in question. Well I learned a valuable lesson that day. She stepped out of the dressing room and the one neighbor was fawning all over it.”it’s so cute” blah blah blah. I on the other hand did what I do and spoke my mind. It wasn’t harsh or demeaning. Just a simple yeah, no. Holy **** at the rage directed towards me for that. So gentlemen even if you’re not having or trying to have sex with a woman just tell her what she wants to hear. Life is far easier with little white lies

Waitman will more than likely be trade bait. If they can’t trade him he will be released and subsequently scooped up with a quickness

When you're the highest paid player on the team and a DPOY candidate, having a dominate game in the playoffs isn't too much to ask .

from what i can see it will be about 8-9 from the top 51 to add from the lower tier. those 3 count zero if cut and all of their cap hit at this point is savings with no dead money added. that was the point. they are amongst the top 51 right now. once you drop some others that currently count towards the top 51 they will have some dead money and then the guy moved into that slot will cost money, it is a saving but not all that much. we won't have tons of money to spend.

There's also a deeper dynamic to managing the cap. You're not wrong in that the above moves won't yield a significant amount of space, but part of balancing the ledger is not making certain moves if you don't have to. On top of what they comp when the roster is finalized they have contracts like Watt's and Freiermuth's that offer the ability to move money from this season down the road via extension or restructure. Patterson in all likelihood gets cut and saves $3M.

But they aren't going to pull the trigger until they have to. There's no sense in sending a bunch of money down the road if you have nothing in the present to spend it on.

It gets old with these guys, doesn’t it. He’s making 21 million a year and feels underpaid. That’s over a million a game. I work my ass off all year to make what he makes in a 1/2 of a quarter. I’ve been a Steeler fan all my but I think I lose more interest every season, esp with Tomlin at the helm

slapping the franchise tag on Watt would deal a fraction of the damage to the Steelers' finances. Based on the terminology still being used for franchise tags, Watt would be classified as a linebacker. Thus, the estimated franchise tag cost in 2026 would be $28.6 million, per Over the Cap—a fraction of what he would otherwise earn on a new extension.

But that's not the only thing the Steelers could do. If they so choose, Omar Khan and the front office could franchise tag Watt up to three times, according to the latest rules posted by Sports Illustrated. While each tag comes at 120 percent of the cost of the previous tag, this would still result in cap savings for the Steelers.

Not too much to ask Highsmith to make them pay for focusing on Watt either.

Highsmith isn't the one trying to be the highest paid defensive player in the league, one career sack in the playoffs for Mr. October Watt isn't good enough .

    This.

LT was legendary but he and the "Big Blue Wrecking Crew" weren't gonna get those 80s Giants teams over the hump by themselves. People tend to forget that New York had a quality Offense during those runs. If one wants to look more recently, the 2021 Los Angeles Rams are another example; namely Aaron Donald.

People questioned if Donald could ever get one despite his dominance. All he needed was some help. A Matthew Staffoed trade later and a Super Bowl Ring to top off his illustrious career.

AR II definitley needs to. That said, who's to say Daniel Martin Rooney won't be the same?! He is the presumed successor but to even assume that is very short sighted at this point.

Overall, the Rooneys do need to catch up with the times. This is getting ridiculous.
