The Steelers don't re-sign players two years out except for franchise QBs.

    They should rethink that.

Exactly when should they have signed Him

Maybe they tried it takes two…..

This is when they normally work on contracts and it works

And its going to cost a lot more now because of other contracts that keep getting signed while they continue to be set in their ways.

    No

    Absolutely not

    Quarterbacks maybe

Too many guys get new contracts and go on coast adding an extra year makes it worse

Their system works very well and creating one hypothetical scenario does not destroy the norm

If he wants a fair contract he will be signed

If he wants an unreasonable contract he can play this year and next year if warranted

No reason to rethink what works and works well

He’s a generational talent, it’s not like they’d have to revamp how they do things for every player thereafter, they can keep their antiquated system in tact if they wish.

Not if they don’t want it to cost more

    This isn’t the Godfather

Cleveland signed Watson to a foolish contract and that did not set a standard or affect any other contract

Tiffany need be and Im not suggesting this route they can keep Watt for two years and by then his use by date is up

This goes both ways. Re-signing a TJ Watt two-years out doesn't signal how they're to handle every upcoming free agent going forward.

Sometimes there's a better move than what you've traditionally done. The most successful companies recognize a core set of values doesn't restrict them to venturing outside the box when needed, any more than they force change for the sake of change.

Well, if he signs for less guaranteed money than Garrett, you’ll be right but if they end up paying Watt more, it was a bad business decision to not get it done sooner.

I’ve been on the top and the bottom of the ladder

The top has a better view

Although it is a little more responsible at the top

he's a multi millionaire. he doesn't have to do anything and it's not just up to the steelers and how they do business. he could sit in, sit out, sign, request a trade, get franchised next year or retire. his situation may be more about what he would prefer over what fans would like or the steelers would like. that's where the money part isn't as much of a bargaining chip. the ring and status may mean more. the money will come and has already been there for him.

Jacksonville isn't moving Trevor. As much as I would love to have him, that isn't happening. Baker is even less so; doubly so considering Pittsburgh had an opportunity to nab him via a trade back in 2022. Kurt could be it but by that point, I'd rather roll with Mason and let the chips fall where they may.

Cornerback remains the biggest drop off among all Defensive Positions. Average age drop off I believe is 27. At least with an EDGE you can get another two to three seasons out of him if that EDGE has signed that second contract. Corners?!

    Very hit or miss.

    Why not?!

At this point, might as well. Micah is going to get paid but how much longer will Jerry wait remains to be seen. I believe he did wait until zero hour to extend Dak. I could see the same for Micah.

This is from the time frame 2008-2018, and for the Pro Bowl, so grain of salt included.

I need to find the graphs, but other key skill positions tend to show roughly the same. Where analytics needs to be able to drill down is with the post age-28 years to see if there's a significant marker for which players tend to see more decline that others.

Not a particularly good graph to apply to Slay.

    Makes sense.

Cornerback is a notoriously brutal position.

Brutal, too, because you're more prone to be on an island, making your mistakes more noticeable.
