how great the steelers defense has been playing. They all talk about how great KC's D is but they are giving up more points and yards than the Steelers as of late. The only thing they are doing better is taking it away. That being said their TO margin in the last 10 weeks is +2 to the Steelers +6. Not really sure how our D gets 0 cred. Thoughts?????

I know some here on the board think it has something to do with a lower quality of opponent faced during the win streak. I don't necessarily agree, but I can understand the sentiment. IMO you can see how the defense has progressed over the past few weeks. We're getting big contributions from guys that were either injured or in lesser roles to begin the season. Burns has played quality ball since he was promoted to starter. Davis' game has really come on of late since he finally switched to S full time and took the job from Golden. Hargrave has been noticeable out there and ha filled in nicely for Heyward. Dupree has wreaked all kinds of havoc since he's been back....

It may not be perfect by any means, but our defense has been playing pretty well for a while now. We've been getting more "splash" plays via sack, fumble recoveries, and interceptions recently. We're not the best defensive unit in the league, but we're good enough to win it all I think. If we continue to get the splash plays and keep people out of the end zone in RZ situations like we have all year, then we will have a really good shot to win number 7.

    Simple: No name defense.

To us, players like Ryan Shazier are incredible. To the national outlook, he is incredible.... but only when he stays healthy.

Someone like Justin Houston is a household name league wide; Marcus Peters the same.

Pittsburgh's defense does not have that "star power" the way the rest of the league perceives. Kansas City is proven and does contain those marquee names.

Do not worry though. Pittsburgh will have those "names" soon enough.

Still think Steelers are 2 or 3 players away from a consistently good, top 5 defense. The emergence of Hargrave, Burns and Davis are big positive step in that direction.

People who understand are observing it. I was listening to Pat Kirwan the other day and he was commenting about how much better we are on defense now that we have Dupree and Harrison playing the edges most of the game. He also commented on Tuitt's development.

However, in defense of those who haven't figured it out yet, the Chiefs defense has been solid longer than ours. It's overall a very good, opportunistic unit. It's a defense that dumped Brady 45-7 back in 2014. It shut the Raiders (with Carr) down twice this season. We're improving, but this group of guys doesn't have that signature performance - yet.

Since week 11 our D is:

    Number 3 total qbr against
Number 1 in yards per game
Number 2 in yards per play
    Number 7 in rushing D.

It's safe to say why we are winning despite bens TO's.

Precisely. Pittsburgh's defense has been on the rise but the Cheifs have been good for some time; going back to even last season after that 1-4 start even.

As I stated in my post, Pittsburgh will get those "names" soon enough once signature wins take effect.

Perhaps because one of the most notable names on the defense, is an OLB coach

The guys on First Take (Stephan A. Smith and Max Kellerman) have been talking about the D and how they've been playing at an "elite level the last 7-8 games". Some people are noticing.

we're gonna have to win a shoot out to disguise our defense in KC
    because
it will be a surprise for the pats when we show them what the hell the defense is really all about

I agree, the defense has really showed up. What I'm surprised about how nonproductive our offense was as soon as they scored the 30 points. If I recall, our defense put 10 of those points in our offenses lap with turnovers. I doubt it was by design not to score more than 30 points because why, else would Ben be out there getting injured ?

D is playing great! A few lapses from time to time but overall above the line performance from such a young group.

And to think, I would have fired Coach Butler after the Dallas game.:lolol:

I am not ready to get overly excited about the Steelers defense just yet. Has it been better since the Dallas game? Of course. But they could not get off the field versus the Ravens, putting the pressure on the offense to get a game-tying field goal or game-winning touchdown. I do like the way they have played in the red zone, put more pressure on the QBs, and creating more turnovers.

From what I've heard from the sports gurus Butle, would not give our young guys too much at once but has been building up to different schemes, more aggressive techniques. If true, the results are working out nicely.

Keep in mind that no defense is infallible. Last year Ben and AB torched Denver's dominant defense to erase a 17 point halftime deficit. That was a defense that was built specifically to hold a lead by teeing off on the QB with elite edge AND interior rushers, and by taking away the opponents' 2 best receiving weapons with pro bowl corners.

No defense in this era will ever be completely dominate. The important thing going forward is not turning the ball over on offense and taking advantage of opportunities when you get them(ie: scoring when they get turnovers). I believe Matt Moore has more tough in him than Alex Smith. If Dupree and Harrison do what they did last week to Alex Smith, week 4 will be a repeat for the Steelers.

I think the quality of teams we have played was decent, but not great. Although almost every team has one good WR or RB. So even if we've played teams with a bad record doesn't mean it's an easy win. Like Indy and they have Gore and Hilton. Even though their backup QB played. We played the Giants with Odell Beckham who's one of the best WR's in the game. The Bills and LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins. So we've faced some good offenses and come out with wins.

I think we'll be fine Sunday on the defensive side of the ball. We have to match up with Maclin, Kelce, and Smith. Also Ware and West. Our run D shutdown Ajayi last Sunday so I think we'll keep Ware in check who's not as good of a RB. Our pass D is going to be called upon the most I think. If we can shutdown Kelce if he plays we'll win this game because we have problems with TE's.

All true except Dupree was not available to us in week 4.

Now that he is and better than ever, time to see if he truly can take the next step.
