    JackAttack...
I feel ya. My heart agrees completeley, and I would hope, maybe Timmons or Woodley, but they haven`t shown me that attitude yet, maybe because "Deebo" would rip their head off, if they tried to "out-bad-ass" him?
On the other hand, my head agrees with Snack, and DaStellars, that in today`s game, that attitude will hurt us more than help us.
Cryin shame, to me, Lambert was my hero, but times have changed, and attitudes like I love, will probably just lead to fines and suspensions, nowadays. :frustrated:
So I think we will just have to hope for the hardest (clean) hitting, and talented lb`s we can get, and I think we DO have those on our roster. :yeehaw:

I think we missed the boat, letting Thaddeus Gibson go. He was nasty at OSU, but we held onto a spot for Aaron Smith and sacrificed him in the process.

I realize that he hasn't really caught on anywhere else, but how many times have we found that guy (especially at linebacker) that the rest of the league couldn't develop or find success with. James Harrison is a great example. We cut him and so did the Ravens and look at his career since then. As well, many of our stars left and just couldn't find the same success at the same level for another team.

Hopefully that next LB with the nasty streak is on our roster...ready to step up to fill Harrison's shoes in the next year or so. :herewego:

I also think letting Gibson go was a mistake, but I don`t know that he would have been the "nasty" player the O.P. was looking for.
I also don`t think it was a mistake holding a spot for Smith, I just think we could have found someone else to let go. (Mewelde Moore, maybe, since he is gone, now, anyway), or one of several other lower-tier players.
I think Gibson will be good for someone down the road.

In hindsight, absolutely a bad decision holding onto him. He never played. Roster spot could have gone to some depth that was needed that year.

Hindsight`s always 20/20, but I still think with the possibility of him coming back, we should have kept him on the roster, just let a lesser player go.I know Gibson was a rookie, and we have plenty of lb`s, I just think he is at least as good as our current backup lb`s, possibly better down the road.
Let`s not hijack this thread with a seperate debate, o.k.? ;)

Not hijacking it, just saying that he was a good fit for this defense and would have been a beast. They knew he was getting looked at and took a chance and lost.

Worilds is an injury machine, Carter is looking better but I don't like his want to. He keeps talking about trying harder and hopefully being better. That stuff doesn't come out of a supposed "Nasty" LB.

K Greene clone would be nice! All motor and matter of fact with him.

Can we grab Vontaze Burfict if they try to slide him by on the PS? That would be hilarious if they did some stupid crap like that.

If Burfict wound up on waivers, this board would BLOW UP , whether we grabbed him, or not... LOL!

I am afraid he is not on the roster, but the only faith I have in
the Steeler scouts and scouting department is that they can evaluate LB's.
So there is hope that we will find him.

I still think Timmons has a chance to come into his own and when he does I believe he will be a force. Whether he is nasty or not will remain to be seen but I believe the play will be there. If they want I will go down on the field, talk the trash, be nasty and then let one of those guys back it up for me. I'm not afraid to do that!

This is why we shouldve gotten the lber from alabama instead of adams. We need a voice and attitude back on the defense.

You guys realize Harrison is still here or did I miss something. His knee has water and swelling and has just been scoped. He's been in this offense for a long time and isn't going to need to learn much of anything or to get reps the way many other players need to. His agent says he's in the best shape (except for this small knee correction) in a long time. I'm assuming the rest of his body and his cardio. Even if he's embellishing a bit, I'm still fine with that. I have faith this guy will be good AGAIN for us this year and maybe next. We def need his replacement but the sky hasn't fallen yet.

Yes we do realize it or at least I do can't speak for any one else but given his age and injury problems looking beyond the next two years is not a bad thing. Now I say two years because with players waiting in the wings and his extension presumably close to being over it is hard to see him being here much beyond that. I would love it if he was but if anything this off-season has shown me that some of the FO changes mean that a long career as a Steeler doesn't amount to much when it is time for the hard choices. I wanted Ward and Smith for one more season to send them out on top but that wasn't meant to be.

I think the discussion here isn't saying that Silverback is gone but rather discussing when it eventually happens and we all know it will, who is going to be there with that nasty edge to step in.

thorn, my thinking is not as much about JH as it is worilds. he's the one we have to make the decision on. i'm not sure they are totally sold on him being that other guy. at least i'm not. do we give him a big second contract? i'm not sure he's shown enough for them to do that? he's not the player that JH is. do they do it just because he's the next one in line? usually not the way we do things unless they have shown those flashes of being a playmaker. has he done enough to this point? :hmmm:

Absolutely Mac, I think this was the make or break camp for Worilds and while Butler and Lebeau's opinions will weigh heavily on what they offer him for his next contract,IMO. They have to think he has something otherwise why the nonchalant attitude about a wrist injury and not rushing him back.

Yeah, I know, but I barely knew who JH was until he slammed the turds fan into the playing turf. It took him a while to establish himself as a starter and a player to be reckoned with. the guy just might be on the squad but making noise when Harrison and Woodley are still here might be tough.

this does let them see other guys getting alot of action. they couldn't really have planned it better for how much it's going to help them evaluate a couple of guys, to see if they keep a couple of other guys. does robinson and carter and johnson show enough, that we could take a big chunk of the lb'ers money and redistribute elsewhere for next year? the LB'ing part of this defense has some high contracts in it. harrison, woodley, timmons, foote and worilds as a 2nd round pick, with his next contract about to go up from there. what will being tight to the cap next year do to this scenario?

I really think that the next "Nasty" LB might be able to be drafted after this season. The incoming rookies seem to fill the needs of the team so well that the Steelers should be more free to draft a few "best player available" types of players. If there is a Nasty LB coming out, I trust the organization to find them. I know that there will be needs to fill this year, just like any other, but it seemed that this draft was exceptionally need oriented. (for the Steelers)

Unless Jason Woirlds turns it up severa; notches there will be no
second contract for him large or small.

Not a LB but Heyward apparently has the take no s*** from anyone attitude and I think he will show the ability to back it up. Is he the next "Nasty" leader of this defense?

In his defence, he's sitting behind two of the best players in the NFL at his position, and when he's played he hasn't exactly stunk. He just hasn't blown anyone away. I think the same could be said of everyone sitting behind him on the depth chart, to be honest.

On the topic of "nasty" - I tend to agree that I'd rather have the strong, silent type (ahem) rather than someone being ferociously ineffectual.

I don't know that we necessarily have a nasty boy besides Harrison right now but I sure like to have one. I think of a Steeler lb as someone that desires to inflict as much punishment as possible. I love what I heard Jack Lambert say when talking about how soft football is now. He said he never wanted to be the guy that was helping his opponent up and patting them on the butt and telling them what a great play they just made. That's the Steeler lb that I LOVE! I loved when Harrison laid out Massoquai and just got up like "yeah. I hit you. So?" That's what I love about him is that he has NO compassion for his opponent whatsoever and that's what a Steeler should be.
