Who's the next "nasty" LB for the Steelers?

I've been a Steeler fan for a looooong time and it seems that we always have a linebacker on the team with a nasty disposition and who is the toughest guy in the room. It goes back to the 70s when Jack Lambert was that guy. We had a few lean years after that but then Greg "I wasn't hired for my disposition" Lloyd came onto the scene and ever since then, we've had the baddest man in the league at the edge LB spot. After Lloyd of course we had Joey Porter and now we have James Harrison. All of these guys were arguably the most feared linebackers in the NFL in their primes.

Now, where does the next guy come from? With this talk of Harrison's injury it's time to start thinking about that. Harrison is not getting any younger and with his back issues and now his knee we don't know how much time he may have left as a Steeler. Carter seems promising and we have invested some high draft picks in backers like Timmons, Woodley and Worilds, but none of those guys seem to have the nasty, tough guy disposition that some of the great Steeler linebackers have had. Would Carter be the type of guy to step onto the Ravens bus and challenge Ray Lewis to a fight in the parking lot? Would Timmons be the type of guy to slam a defensive back on the ground for chiding the kicker (i.e. Jack Lambert)? Would Lammar Woodley or Jason Worilds be the type of guy to patrol the 50 yard line at Heinz Field before a game trash talking the opposing team AND, more importantly, backing it up in the game (if you don't get kicked out of the game before it starts - haha)? Would Larry Foote or Stevenson Sylvester slam a Clowns fan to the ground in THEIR home stadium for running onto the field like a drunk idiot?

Is THAT guy currently on the roster or is he still in the college ranks? We NEED THAT GUY! The tradition MUST be passed on!!

I honestly don't see it on this current roster. It is extremely difficult to predict when and where that may come from.

Not on the roster....and if he is mean in college..you will hear he is a trouble maker and not a "steeler" type player.

He might be on the roster. If Harrison sticks around as a coach, scout, trainer, waterboy, or anything, I wouldn't put it past him to walk onto the field and slam down some fools.

I think Worilds was drafted as the heir apparent but that of course would be in jeopardy if he doesn't make the 53 man roster.

Not on the roster? Woodley is the next beast. The only thing holding him back is the commish.

Interesting topic Jack. I don't think he is on the roster yet, we have some very talented LB"s on the roster but no one who is great AND just plain mean like the ones you mentioned.

Woodley's a nice guy compared to the linebackers I mentioned above. He's a great player and a tough player, but he isn't the guy stepping onto the Ravens' bus looking for Ray Ray. I'm talking about guys who may have one or two screws loose and aren't afraid of ANYTHING.

Even if he were on the roster that can't do diddly cause goodell would fine or suspend them for even looking in the wrong direction.

We may not have a guy like that starting for us or in the pipeline, but I couldn't care less. What Lambert did is a great story and that will live on, but I'll trade a no BS taking, trash talking, punch throwing, crowd beloved Joey Porter type for a silent but superior James Harrison type every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. With 11 guys on the defense and the way players are these days, we'll always have vocal leaders. I'm not saying I want any of our guys to be meek, but I do want our guys to win games. And superior players win games. Continue to draft for that, like we have been.

When did we get rid of James "Silver Back/Deebo" Harrison? I know he had a surgery last year and is healing up now from something else but folks are talking like he's gone.

That guys doesn't SEEM to be here yet. But, to be honest, I barely knew who Harrison was til he slammed that browns fan. He came out of nowhere soon after. Maybe one of our boys are building a head of steam now.

PS - I have read that D. Poe is falling in the depth chart.

That sounds like Suh over in Detroit. That dude has a screw loose. Not sure that really translates in today's NFL like it did years ago. I would love to see Suh in the black n gold though.

Yeah but Snack that was just Porter. I think what jack attack is talking about is that type of mean, take no BS, I would rather spit on you than help you up, attitude that Lambert and Llyod seemed to brign to the team. I love those clips of Llyod walking to the scrum and telling a couple of cowboys( I think) to get the f@#K out of his guys face, or blowing up a play in the backfield and telling them not to run that stuff(4-letter version) here. You are right at times Joey trash talked to much but he backed it up as well and he had that I don't give rats backside what any one thinks because i play for the Steelers. I think if we lose Silverback then we lose that kind of nasty I am going to blast you if you touch one of my guys type player and there isn't anyone in the pipeline as you say yet, I hope they do get that player, that I'm a Steeler and I will punch you in the mouth type of attitude because as Jackattack said it is kind of like a tradition now.

WTH? The guy is not even going to be out for the season. The knee is a non-issue. He had a broken eye socket last year. Sheesh, his motor hasn't stopped, he gets held every play.

Meh. If it happens, it happens. Our real tradition is elite linebackers. We need to bring in the best ones we can find. If they have Lambert's attitude, all the better, but Lambert's attitude in Larry Foote's body isn't much. I'd rather have Lambert's skills in the body of someone quiet as a mouse. I'm not saying I mind badass-ness, but we shouldn't go looking for it. We should get the best players we can and let the chips fall where they may.

I think that's the best strategy for winning, although I admit I'm more of a fan of the quiet badass type like Harrison and Troy.

My bad, I think the next nasty linebacker will come from the small state of Rhode Island and have that small state attitude that he has to out perform everyone on the field. The topic was "who", I don't see anyone else naming names so I'll call it.

    Barkevious Mingo! From LSU!!!!!

    We can call him Ming!

all of em. :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: :stogie:

to be honest, we have some very good LB's here. i was fairly impressed with brandon johnson last week. i hope he builds on that and gets comfortable with this defense.

i'm not down on sly at all after last game , he's right there and did well in coverage. if he could just get a little under controll on his pass rush, he gets thru the line.

spence was all around the ball, that's a very good sign.

    carter is improving.

robinson , as i said, is a very nice find.

    ivy can play.

worilds, ?????? i like but am just not sure he's the real deal for us. i'm still very up in the air about the kid. this injury doesn't help that.

    JH,wood,LT, no problem.

larry? backup larry, i mean, is a great role for him.

we got plenty of nasty LB's.

Sean Spence doesn't have the size but if you watch his college plays, he definitely has a nasty and tough attitude on the field.

Well the odds are high that the future nasty LB will come from Kent State!!! HA HA!

And if you take all the "nasty" players into consideration they all come from slightly smaller schools, that probably adds to the chip on their shoulder.

What the heck though....how can you have a nasty hard hitter in today's league with today's rules?

I am not giving up on timmons. I think he has a mean streak in him. he is quiet, but when he gets a shot he takes it. Once he gets in one position and stays there not having to move to outside for a few games. I think he has been used in coverage alot because farrior had lost a step the past couple of years. I can see him being a nasty mlb in the future. maybe its just me hoping
