Who would have been happy with this arrangement?

I read today on the PPG that there was some actual consideration given to splitting the offensive coordinator duties, making Randy Fichtner the passing game coordinator and Sean Kugler the running game coordinator. This would have been the arrangement until Kirby Wilson could have come back to become the full time offensive coordinator.

Uh.....no! That would have been an absolute disaster IMHO.

They wanted to give Kirby that job bad huh, does anyone else think a RB assistant coach as offensive coordinator a crazy concept? If he was QB or WR coach for a year or two I'd be all for it, but he was never anything but a RB coach? Fitchner would have been way more qualified.

Fitchner needs to go if they have no confidence in him being offensive coordinator out of those 3 candidates.

I predicted this actually! I posted as much before the Haley hire. I basically think they accomplished the same thing, I don't see Haley here for a long time, he will either do good and get a HC offer or do bad and be let go. Either way, if they are that high on Wilson, I see him stepping in as OC down the road.

Edited: I should add, I think Haley will be here 2 seasons minimum unless he really blows the place up. I'm not implying he will be gone after this season. If he turns this unit into a high octane offense, I'll definitely want him to stick around, despite what I think of him.

But if he turns things around, other teams will once again start looking at him for head coach. Bad teams have short memories. Some desperate team would give him a shot. Then Randy could take over from there.

Let's not forget that he DID turn the Chiefs around in 2010 before the 2011 disaster, so a team that needs turning around will look at that.

I believe it would be a disaster as well. That would have gotten Tomlin canned, which Im really starting to wonder about how long or short that leash that Rooney has him on really is.

I never have understood the appeal and qualifications of Kirby Wilson either. They talk about what a great job he's done with our RBs but I don't think Mendenhall has been the kind of player we all envisioned when he was drafted. Redman is somebody that has overperformed but I'm not sure I give Wilson that much credit for that. Redman has shown flashes but really hasn't been given that much of a shot. The two games he started were a mixed bag. Played great in the start against Denver and basically was mediocre averaging about 3.5 yps in the other game he started this year. The article I read also mentioned the development of Carey Davis, Gary Russell, etc. Give me a break! The article was almost like they were desparately trying to sell someone as the OC and were grasping at straws. I hate that Wilson is going through this crisis and pray for a speedy recovery for him, but I for one would have been VERY DISAPPOINTED had he been named the OC!

I don't know.....i've been hearing rumors that Tomlin is not at all happy that the Rooney's let Arians go. Rumor has it Tomlin told Arians and most of the staff that he wanted Arians back in 2012, and Tomlin felt over looked when they didn't extend Arians contract. They're also speculating that Tomlin is upset enough to consider leaving.

It sure didn't look to me like Tomlin was upset at Haleys press conference. And these rumors are coming out of the cleveland area so...

Quite honestly if Tomlin did not have the intestinal fortitude to make a change at OC after BA continued to accept and facilitate underperformance from the offense, then maybe Tomlin needs to evaluate whether or not he should be the head coach of the Steelers. At times you have to make changes that are not comfortable to make. A lot of people are criticizing Rooney for being a "meddling" owner, but I for one am extremely thankful that he stepped in and made the move that all of us knew should have been made! Had it been up to Tomlin, apparently it would have been the status quo, an underperforming offense with a lot of high octane offensive weapons.

maybe just maybe, the only one promising kirby the job was tomlin. he also wanted BA back and that didn't happen either. keith butler, new HC in another year? john mitchell? DLB, when butler takes over at DC? we will find out more at the end of this year. he has one option year after that. many a head coach would love to step into this situation.
