January 3, 2015: Playoff loss to Baltimore, Bell hurt, Ben Tate started.

January 17, 2016: playoff loss to Denver. Bell hurt, Toussaint started.

January 22, 2017: playoff loss to New England. Bell hurt 1st quarter, reveals later he hurt himself prior.

Why does anyone on this board not want depth at RB this year?

A great contract? It had $10 million in guarantees. That's not a great contract by any means. The Steelers could have cut him after 1 year and only been out $10 million. Compared to David Johnson and Gurley, that's a really bad offer

How is that helping them this year? That 14 million in cap space could have went towards the defense..

That's a false report because they were trying to include the first year of the contract which is not guaranteed. If he was to get hurt in between now and the end of the season he would not get any of the 70 million except the 10 million that was guaranteed.

    https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2018/7...t-steelers-offer-guaranteed-money-free-agency

"The franchise tag is going to pay him a fully guaranteed salary of $14.5 million this year. Would you rather have that or a deal that only guarantees you $10 million? Even with the possibility of making up to $70 million over five years, the smart move is to go with the bird in the hand here, in a sport where careers are already short.

If Bell had agreed to this deal, the Steelers could have released him after this season. The team would be left with an unspecified amount of dead cap space for 2019, and Bell would walk away with less money than what he was guaranteed to make with the franchise tag and nowhere near the deal’s $70 million possibility.

Bell choose to take the guaranteed money this year and add it to the deal he’ll get as a free agent next year, giving him more guaranteed money than what the Steelers offer would give him."

I am not worried about them pics or his looks if and when he comes in he will be ready cause he has money to make. As for the whole drug thing it most certainly adds up, first off a hair test for weed last 6 months but who said it was just weed? It could be anything but this whole thing is weird and I believe Bell wouldn't tell his teammates he was coming in then don't show unless there was something else. jmo

Bell did not graduate. Many/most of them do not. Such a waste of free education.

Well we all know the Steelers are not big players in FA but we shall see if that holds true this off season when we have more cap space we have had for many years.

They didn’t know Bell was going to sit out the first 10 weeks. It’s easy to say they should have done x,y,z now.

It said rolling guarantee structure. Which means what exactly? How easy were the stipulations in the contract to meet? Was it workout bonuses instead of hefty performance bonuses, etc.

There’s a lot more than just guaranteed money in a contract. In the long run he lost a lot of leverage around the league for sitting out a year, because his replacement is tearing it up. You can make a valid argument that Bell was a product of his surroundings (no disrespect to Conner). He is an injury prone 27 year old RB who is one urine test from a year long suspension and will have not played football in over a year and a half by the time he suits it up for his next team. Not to a particularly good look.

Either way idc. Conner is looking just as good and seems to have his head on his shoulders in a way LeVeon doesn’t. This team won’t miss Bell one bit, and might even be better off without him.

Rolling guaranteed means that he would get the money assuming that he stepped on the field healthy at the start of the regular season. Sure there's a lot to a contract, but as the article (and anyone with God given sense) understands, it's the guaranteed money that matters the most. So there was only $10 guaranteed. Face it. They low balled him and he chose to sit out which was well within his full right to do. I can assure you he hasn't lost any leverage, because if these guys are smart at all in the players union the franchise tag will be eliminated all together and all their money will be guaranteed. How in the world in baseball do you have full guaranteed contracts and not in football??? Actually, the likelihood of a baseball player suffering a career ending injury in a single game is highly unlikely so i guess i do understand, but still.

Anyways, i can name 5 teams (Browns, 49ers, Titans, Texans, Jets) that could definitely use the versatality of Bell in the backfield, can afford to pay him, and don't have the number of superstars on their team that the Steelers do so its not an issue with paying him.

Lets just say he wants 5 yr 70 mil, 35 guaranteed. There's currently 6 teams that meet that profile and with the exceptions of the Colts ONLY ONE has a really good running back. All but one have a franchise QB (Titans) and you won't see the QB movement like you did last season. Likely the salary cap will go up again. He's way to versatile a back in running, blocking and catching and one year of sitting out doesn't mean that he wont be able to regain his previous form.

I can’t really see it as a lowball offer. The guaranteed money was lower than the typical team would offer, true, but I think it was in line with what Pittsburgh usually offers (although perhaps influenced by Bell’s history).
You nailed it. If the next CBA ensures fully-guaranteed contracts, we’re going to see an evolution in contracts. Shorter lengths, maybe with first rights of refusal,...

How does that cap space or draft pick help this year? The nfl is a win now league. That's why the rams are doing what they are doing and making all those splash moves. They are trying to get a ring before Goff is off his rookie contract.

U cant really see it as a lowball offer???!! ...

If its influenced by Bells history...what history are you talking about??

3x pro bowler (2014, 2016, 2017)...you talking about that history??

2x NFL first team (2014, 2017)....you talking about that history???

No less than 350 touches in any year hes played 10 games or more...over 400 last year.

    You talking about that history??

    ...and hes not being lowballed???

Arguably top 3 RB in the league since he got here

    ....and he's not being lowballed??

Todd Gurley has played two less years...45 million GUARANTEED!!! ...

    and hes not being lowballed???

If you say the Steelers dont pay out big contracts to RBS that's fine... that's their prerogative. It's too many superstars on the team. You cant pay them all...that's fine. They made their choice based upon supply and demand. That's the team prerogative....but dont be stupid. Dont be shallow. Dont embarrass yourself by looking at Bells body of work and refuse to look at 10 million guaranteed as a pure insult and then cop an attitude when he doesn't report...especially after you've attempted to run him into the ground and would have continued to do so had he reported.

Has no one ever heard of Ryan Shazier on here?? I'm just curious??

Well where are you going to get depth at that position if you dont have Bell?? You sound kinda ridiculous by basically contradicting your own statement with your next response.

What would have helped us is Bell showing up and earning his big payday. The Steelers don’t have a crystal ball. For them to go into the season hoping JC would perform as well as he has would be asinine. That’s what losing teams do. The Steelers played their cards correctly and come out winners overall.
