I recall in the days of Ward and Miller, they were so good at finding the soft spots in zones and were often fairly open. Neither were fast, they were just good at what they did. Where has that cunningness gone, and can it be retrieved? Is it still effective against today's defenses?

It's the same one that raised our red zone efficiency and allowed our qb to lead the league in yardage last year. Hes not the one dropping passes or fumbling the ball. Hes not the one that injured two tes or a franchise qb or the fb. He's not the one that fired the rb coach, hired Sherman as the wr coach or let the best o-line coach in the league leave. He had 3 days to put a kid that was essentially a 3rd string qb and an offense on the road across the country in a situation to win. He did. So just stop with the doesn't have a clue talk. That's like cutting off both your legs and wondering why you're not the state 100 yard dash champ.

Wow! Let’s make him our head coach!

Seriously, I agree with you that it’s too soon to chase Fichtner out of town with pitchforks, but I think that the game plan vs. San Fran had an element of fear to it. Also, even without Ben he uses empty sets and shotgun too much. I want to see improvement Monday.

I'm really getting sick of the common belief on this board that the OC is 100% responsible for our offensive issues. We have a coaching staff. If it was as simple as letting the OC and DC just writing up the GP and running it on Sunday then why have a HC and all these other so called expert / coaches on the team collecting a huge pay check? Game plans are created by the entire coaching STAFF...and the HC is the guy who makes the decision with what he wants done. Just because Tomlin has a defensive mindset does not mean he has no understanding of how an offense works. The buck stops with Tomlin and the GM. If the GM supplies the talent then the HC has to produce. There's probably some talent issues in the secondary and at LB - at least there was. I don't think that's an excuse anymore. Now the talent issue is at QB and TE. The rest of the team has no excuse for the disaster start. We are not the 2nd least talented team in the league. Yet we are the 2nd worst team in the NFL. Lucky for Tomlin the Dolphin's exist.

Good coaches win, the players change but the result shouldn't change too much. We continue to get worse year after year.

My friends you don't have to tell me, I have been a non Tomlin guy for years.
Our problem is we have a 2nd year qb with little or no NFL game experience
    who needs HELP.
!. Start with the overrated OL. A running game gives this QB a chance to be successful
there are no running lanes to speak of. They have STUNK IT UP all year long to date.
    2. No fault of Steelers, Mcdonald going down he is injury prone China Doll. This is why Steelers
signed TE this week. They had to, to give this young qb a weapon.
    3. Because our WR's are young and inexperienced, create routes that will give
these players a chance at more SEPARATION.
    4. All of these points fall under the responsibility of the OC and HC.
    5. For all you HR people Metric score for Tomlin and Fichtner 0-5 rating (1) under performed does not meet. We will see going forward if they can raise this metric score. LOL.

To find holes in zones you have to stretch those zones ...The way that is done is deep on both sidelines and deep in the middle ...After that you attack intermediate middle forcing the zone to sink towards the center this will open up a lot of space underneath to work almost any route you want ..IE The Pats

#1 Who is our deep threat ? #2 Who is the Intermediate threat ?

I don't think the OC knows .. I don't think the players know ... IMO the OC should be forcing that issue in practice...We cant be a well oiled Machine because we haven't even got all the parts sorted out yet ...

A couple of balls well placed deep in the zone can open things up and stretch the field. That’s the best way to score....surely better than having the beat off defenders......

I said it, in the off season. When everyone was talking about AB's departure. Losing munch would be the downfall of the offense. Not Bell ... not AB! I could even see it in the preseason games. Everyone was saying that he left because he wanted to go back home. I stated that he left because of the drama and tomlin. The unexpected death of our wr coach didn't help either. Killer B's was our last hope of sniffing another ring and now, that window/chapter is closed

Did not the OC have Ben for the first two games? And the offense looked the same as with the Mason. Good OC's, scheme to the strengths of his players. But only, if he knows the strengths of his players.

Not sure about getting open but Hines just caught every thing and always made something happen afterwards with a smile. He was a tank going forward.

Umm if Munchak could go home and do that some job, why wouldn't he? And probably get paid more.

Um , you make one of the best coordinators in the league an offer he can't refuse. Next man up, doesn't work for every situation.

Except he's not a coordinator... There's no reason to believe he would be a good OC.
