    How can you really judge success coming in with a little more than half a season to go. He would not have time to implement a new scheme, the injuries have already piled up. He might motivate better, or somehow magically find players that can cover in the middle, but he is not going to magically make suspect over drafted players better. There is a core here that at times actually looks decent. In 6 games they have as many turnovers as they had last year. I believe you can really build abound Minka, TJ, and Bush. Haden and Nelson when healthy can cover. A couple more pieces and this D is going to be legit (with a solid scheme), but you are not going to find that by changing everything mid year.

    The 4-3 Under; the "Seattle Defense" as it is called is not too different than the 3-4 Eagle Defense Keith Butler uses. In addition, unlike Butler, Quinn has had success as a Defensive Coordinator. Sure, Pittsburgh does not have the "Legion of Boom" but does have a nice group of Defensive Players to work with.

    If anything, having Bud Dupree and/or T.J. Watt operate in a three point stance is much better anyway. That maximizes their overall pass rushing capabilities. Add the fact that Tomlin is a 4-3 coach by trade and having Dan Quinn would not be a bad idea.

    Only three major questions remain;

    1.) Will Dan Quinn even be available by the time he is fired?!

    2.) Does Dan want to go back to being a Defensive Coordinator to begin with?!?!

    Most Importantly;

    3.) Would Pittsburgh really make that big a shake up?!?!

    :hmm:

    You do realize this was said on Septemebr 29th correct?! Keith has done much better. For that matter, much better than I originally thought.

    Yeah it’s also just as highly unlikely a new HC has a HOF QB, best WR in the game and a top 3 RB at his disposal to waste as well.

    Of course one person doesn’t decide everything but the HC has a lot of input. He also has control of game planning and preparation.

    As for the next HC having as much success as MT you are right. Let’s see MT came in taking over a team 2 years removed from a SB win. Having a franchise QB who was in the beginning of a HOF career. A defense filled with stars when they were allowed to play football. The next HC will not have all this but you will have that.

    BS ...players are supposed to execute and overcome all the obstacles that sub par preparation and game planning put in their way. We have had the talent to overcome some of these shortcomings. Now we don’t. When we prepare and plan accordingly with talent we win. When we try to win on talent alone we’ve had very inconsistent results. Now we have less talent and need to rely on preparation more than usual. I realize injuries are a major issue but do we always look prepared enough to win games? IMO....it’s no.

    How do fans know the preparation that took place? How do fans know the game plans? Every team in the league has plays that fail and succeed.

    It's certainly easier to recognize when players don't execute and make mistakes.

    They were prepared enough to win every game this season except one.

    There isn't a team in the league that always looks prepared. The other guys get paid too. That's the nature of professional sports.

    What we do know is this team was prepared enough to win a lot of games with this HC. The ownership understands that without the bias that some fans have. The ownership can also view the situation outside of the bubble of disappointment. That's why Tomlin is still the HC of this team.

    Ultimately it's the ownership that decides the fate of a team.

    The Head Coach is responsible/ accountable for everything the team does or fails to do. Period. Leadership 101

    That would be true in a situation like Oaklands...however, Tomlin has a GM (and an owner) that has a lot of say in who stays and who goes.

    Probability

    Tomlin was/is pretty damn successful sans his playoff record.

    Happens more than you think. Just look at the HOF qbs & their SB records. Alot of talent wasted by head coaches not named Lombardi, Noll, Walsh, Gibbs, Belicheat. These cream of the crop HCs are rare.

    Depends on your definition of successful. Sans playoff record? Isn’t that the goal to compete for championships? He’s had championship caliber teams that underachieved and fell short. Some of those losses embarrassing,honestly. There are basically two camps on Tomlin. Those that are satisfied with our results over the last 10 years and those who are tired of just having a non losing record to show for all the talent we wasted. I’m not afraid of change.

    Well, not if you listen to the apologists.

    MT doesn’t make the decisions.
    MT doesn’t pick the players.
    MT isn’t the OC
    MT isn’t the DC
    MT isn’t STs coach
    It’s not his game plan
    It’s not his scheme on D
    He’s not responsible for the locker room.
    Someone want to tell me exactly what he does? Anyone who wants to claim fans don’t know the game plan or how they prepared ,either aren’t watching the games or don’t want to recognize the problem. Wildcat 2 weeks in a row is just the most recent glaring example of lazy preparation. There’s so many other times this team came out looking like they never even practiced but that doesn’t fall in MTs jurisdiction either I guess.
