1 thing seperates them. Dwyer is now like 240 and fat. Morris is in shape and wants to play

There is no way Dwyer runs a 4.59 40 now.

Very similar physically yet very different in production. Both are 6th round selections, and are similar in age. Aside from the obvious, the offensive line, what is the major difference of these two? Second, how does Dwyer become another Morris?

    1. Heart/Discipline/Work ethic
    2. The system they play in.
    3. The lack of commitment to the run by our Steelers.
    4. Competition within the team.
    5. Undecided coach willing to settle on one back.

It's predominantly #2 and #3 (which are basically the same thing). The difference between Dwyer and Morris is personified by the difference between Haley and Shanahan.

Haley was brought in here to take our offense back to a run-first philosophy. Instead, we were 26th in the league in rushing (and 20th in attempts).
The Redskins LED THE LEAGUE in rushing (and were 3rd in attempts). It's what Shanahan does. He has done it everywhere he has been with makeshift running backs that he has molded into stars. Haley hasn't shown an ability to create that kind of success with the run game (another reason to be curious as to why HE was brought in to re-establish the ground game).

It's a little bit #4 and #5. Morris went out and blew past everyone ahead of him on the depth chart. Dwyer failed to do that. Granted, I think Mendenhall and Redman are better than, who, Hightower and Royster? But I don't think Dwyer is very good. I think he's an average NFL back. Personally, and I'm probably in the minority here, but I like Redman better than anyone on our roster to carry the football.

#5 hands down. Any RB will tell you they need the touches to get into any kind of rhythm. Tomlin's 4 RB approach is one of many reasons the Steelers are sitting home or on the golf course on Saturdays or Sundays right now.

I would prefer Todd Haley 2013. Wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if Tomlin was fired and Haley promoted to HC. The top things missing on this team is discipline and focus and we won't ever have that if Tomlin continue his "fist bumpin" ways. With that said...I can think of many other coaches I would prefer over Haley...but Haley would certainly be my pick over Tomlin. Coaching is like parenting. Your kids are not your friends...they are your kids. You players are not your friends...they are your players. You can be a successful players coach as long as you instill discipline and focus.

Blame Haley all you want...but its awful hard to establish a successful run game and be even close to top 10 in the league in rushing or attempts when you can't even figure out who your running back is on this team in week 15 of the regular season. This team needs a #1 RB and a second for 3rd down or change of pace. What we don't need is four different RB's getting 7 carries each during a game. Maybe pre-season when you are trying to find out what you have....certainly not week 15 when you are fighting for a playoff spot.

Yes, but in KC he had Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles. We don't have that here.

Good thread, good replies. I believe strongly that having a big time running back is going to solve a lot of the problems with this time, and should be the #1 player to add for next year. I'm just not sure that any on the current roster can fit that description.

Haley didn't rotate his RB's just for the sake of rotating them. He had a speed guy in Charles and a power guy in Jones and he used them as such. He didn't just randomly rotate them in and out of the game, he used them in the correct situations and as such, both succeeded.

When Haley came to Pittsburgh he was raving about Mendenhall, how good he thought he was and how he was looking forward to him getting healthy so that they could work together. He made a few other positive statements throughout the season about Mendenhall. Based on his comments, it appeared he wanted Mendenhall as the lead back. That seemed to be the case until his second injury and then ending up in Tomlin's dog house. He never got another chance.

I believe the only reason he didn't get another chance is because of Tomlin. No way a guy who praised him numerous times would sit him on the bench in place of Dwyer and Redman, two plodders.

The O-Line got much better this year. Mendy would have shredded defenses getting the typical block, at the line. That would have taken pressure off the passing game (which is struggling, also), and propelled the Steelers into the playoffs.

Funny how under BA, everything was his call, Tomlin is a hands off coach, doesn't interfere with his coordinators but now, he's Captain Ahab, interfering and compromising Haleys authority. How do you know that Haley didn't sour on Mendy and his attitude? In fact, with Haleys demeanor I can totally see him sitting Mendy or at the very least, in agreement with Tomlin over it. Hell, Haley didn't even put Boldin in the game during a crucial drive in Arizona! The famous blow up on the sidelines and you are going to tell me he wouldn't sit Mendy?

I will say Trent Williams their LT is a total BEAST! If we had a guy like that on our team it would do wonders....

I don't know about the rest of their line, but I'm willing to bet overall they are better run blockers....

The run/option freezes LBers and forces the DL to maintain gap responsibility putting them at an disadvantage.

Comparing Morris's success to Dwyers is like comparing apples and oranges. Both round fruit but from different trees.
