What real coaching looks like

Very true! However, Tomlin won early with great talent that was already in place (players and coaches). Nearly any coach with half a brain would have won with what he was handed! Now look at the last 8-10 years with his fingerprints everywhere...can anyone seriously argue this is a good coach!? We are about to see what a roster with little talent and no direction looks like...Pathetic!! And yes, he is largely responsible for this current roster as well. He sure does talk real good though!!

So we keep MT not because he can’t do his job like coaching,control a locker room, let’s practices get out of hand and etc. But we’ll keep him because of the Rooney rule which is BS. If a coach can’t do the job regardless of his color get rid of him.

 

He is not being kept by that Rooney rule, he's being kept by the "only 3 coaches in 50 years" arbitrary internal Rooney rule. Tomlin would still be safe even if he was white.

 

If Haskins has more upside and potential or worth, why didn't he dress for games? He's been around the team long enough to figure out what he needs to do to be successful, yet he didn't, no?

 

Because he doesn't. Everyone who thought he was good coming out of college was full of ****. Ohio State and USC quarterbacks usually suck in the NFL. It's science.

But Troy P took LeBeau's Defense to another level. For that matter, he, along with a young Big, were the final two pieces needed to nab that "one for the thumb". LeBeau was great long before Troy no doubt....

Because Mason had more experience in the Steelers offense. Haskins just came to the team this past year. Experience matters for coaches.

We'll see how Haskins matures and progresses.

IMO Haskins has more talent and upside than Rudolph. If the Steelers are not sold that Haskins or Rudolph can use their talents to execute the Steelers offense at a high level then the Steelers will need to consider other options at QB.

 

I'm a steelers fan, not a chiefs fan. Not sure a nail biting loss in the AFC championship is really an example of bad coaching, especially after winning the SB the previous season. LOL Hardly comparable to a team that has not won a game in 10 out of the last 11 post seasons.

No one is calling out Tomlin for 1 bad game or 1 bad season. A great coach can have a bad game or even a bad season. Heck they might even have a few bad seasons if the whole resume is dominated by post season wins. My judgement on Tomlin is not just antidotal. It's the entire picture painted over a long period of time. It's the collective results we have seen for a decade. You cannot say 10 years is not enough time to make a judgement on a coach. Frankly I think 5 years is enough time to cast judgement.

Which ever way you slice it there's no excuse for the lack of results in Pittsburgh. The talent was here. There's been more than enough time to build and rebuild. Where's the results? Where's the improvements? We lucked into the playoffs due to playoff expansion and the Jags beating the Colts. Even bad teams can find success once in a while which is why you don't make conclusions on coaches or teams based on 1 win/loss or 1 good or bad season.

In the last 10 years we have 5 seasons with 9 wins or less (with a HOF QB, WR, and great RB) 9 out of 10 seasons resulted in zero post season victories. The 1 season with a post season win ended by getting throttled by the Patriots in embarrassing fashion. The last 4 post season games resulted in ass whoopings. Gave up 42,48,45, and 36 points in each. That's called being out coached. Not losing by last second FG's in the AFCC. Don't forget our HC is a defensive coach so he owns it even more. Dig into the details and you see zero progress from the running game. Were we dead last in the league w/ a 1st Rnd draft pick running the ball? Penalties, drops, broken plays, mental mistakes, and off field issues have plagued this team for a very long time. The HC is responsible for the discipline and preparation of the players. This is not a well coached team and you can't even argue it. Especially when you're ranking near dead last in the NFL in running the ball and stopping the run. Good coaches have more post season success, especially when they had great talent to work with.

 

I don't think he's our coach because of the Rooney rule. That's a reach. The team has a track record of continuity. He was hired for his personality, as was Cowher. Our entire MO has always been consistency and reluctance to make changes. If BC's personal life didn't end his coaching career he'd probably still be our coach. This approach obviously has it's pros and cons. Largely it's been a very successful recipe and I'm ok with it as the results speak for the selves. That said you can still be objective and I think the last 10 years speak for them selves.

Very few coaches have the skill to stick around and be successful over a 10 or 15 year period. Tomlin certainly has not shown to have that skill as a coach. He had a great start taking over a great team. He deserves credit for that. Just like players you can expect coaches to make mistakes but they have to learn from them. They have to show progress. This is a team in desperate need of a culture change. Since Tomlin aint going anywhere I sure hope the new coaches that come in bring a culture change. If they don't we can look forward to another 8 or 9 win season if we are lucky. Tomlin has been given an opportunity to rebuild the team more than once and it has yet to result in post season success. Now that ratings and ticket sales are plummeting I have to think the ownership has lost patience. I suspect if we don't make a run next year it's over with for MT in Pittsburgh.
