In the past it was playing soft zone and allowing teams like the Pats to pick us apart. But we used to be impossible to run against back when we had Big Snack.

What is the achilles heel of the 2018-2019 Steelers D?

Opposing QBs with arms and Opposing RBs with legs.

In all seriousness, though, it's coaching. These players just can't be this bad. If they were, they wouldn't have even played DIII ball.

Steelers starting 11 on defense contains 6 first round picks (Heyward, Watt, Dupree, Burns, Haden and Edmunds) and 3 second round picks (Tuitt, Davis, Bostic). 9 of 11 defenders were 1st or 2nd round picks yet we have the worst defense in the NFL.

Do we need 11 first round picks on D to even be an average defense?

Tomlin/Butler don't know what they are doing. Seriously. This defense should at least be average, it's abysmal from constant communication breakdowns + missed tackles.

While believing/trusting anything the TV commentators spout is difficult at best, how many times have we heard the Color Commentator say about the Steelers this year: "That Defense looks confused out there"!

Reminds me of the famous ancient philosopher: "Confusion says - Duck who fly upside down have quack up".

Cover 2 with 2 guys deep who offer no help not even on deep balls .... Is why I will continue to stick with putting more speed back there in Cover 1 ... At worst we get 1 more guy in the box not standing in the outfield as the ball rolls past them like a T ball player ...

A couple of patches of extra long grass has more value than our 2 Deep guys...

You forgot depth at all those positions, also.

It starts shortly after Steelers send the Punt Team on the field and ends just as the opponent's Extra Point clears the uprights. Other than that, pretty solid.

That small area between the hashes seems to present lots of problems.

LeBeau wasnt past his time, he had nothing to work with. The proof of that is what he did with the Titans, not great but better than the Steelers. Tomlin is no where close to the master mind defensive guru that he thinks he is. Drafting is horrid. Javis Jones is a prime example. Picking Edmunds #1, he will be ok but not a #1, especially when the RB options were deep. The Rooneys better wake up, there is no pride in keeping a coach that sucks.

It's hard to overlook the obvious. Shazier. After he went down so did the Steelers defense in free fall form. He was pretty much coaching them while on the field. Now they have nobody to do that and it has now been left up to the sidelines to pull it altogether and it's not working whatsoever.

Discipline is a strong second. These guys make one play and all of a sudden they become showboat cowboys. That actually goes for the offense as well. It's the most frustrating way to watch the Steelers fall apart the way they have.
