I was watching the day 4 OTA's video on the homepage and Wes was the last guy they interviewed before the end of the video and was surprised by his size. Not his height since I knew he was tall going in but he seems to have packed on some muscle. I remember hearing some rumors about possibly moving him to tightend has anyone heard anything more on this? I can see him as a tall pass catching TE in the mold of a Winslow and not the typical blocking TE they usually have after Heath on the depth chart. He looks like a big target and I hope he makes the initial few cuts because I'd like to see the guy get a chance to play. Maybe be another diamond in the rough type of player.

Wes Lyons is almost 6'-9". And he probaby weighs close to 260 now that he's changed to a full time TE.

He still has a tough road ahead of him to make the roster, but that's a big person.

Nice RZ size for sure. And we all know we struggled last season in the RZ (although I put most blame on BA for that).

Yeah it looked like he had packed on the muscle that is for sure. So they did make the move to have him be a full time TE, nice.

Could be a dangerous weapon if everything pans out. I hope he isn't using Lymas as his catching coach!

Problem being, while I like Lyons from what I saw of him before, I doubt he would be high enough up the depth chart to get used in those situations. Still, TE is like RB for us at the moment - one of those positions that's going to be interesting at camp, and in a good way.

I think the only position that won't be interesting in cam is QB and both Safety spots. Sure there are more players who are secure in their starting rolls, but I mean units. Virtually every other unit has very interesting competitions on this team. I don't recall another off season like this in the last 10 years. I really only started to pay this kind of close attention to off season and camp stuff about that long. Since then I enjoy training camp and pre-season almost as much as the regular season. I like the 4 game pre-season thing. It gives me plenty of time to witness what I had been reading about each player and the team ample time to make the decisions they need. I'm not so sure a new format is good for anyone except more casual fans. :herewego:  :herewego:  :herewego:  :herewego:

i remember when teams didn't have a longsnapper too, but that has become a norm. it wouldn't suprise me if more specialty receivers are used or kept for such situations.

Yes he can....And the way Haley Loves Miller and the way he Loves a big WR ,I think he is the surprise roster spot winner this season...

It seems interesting to me that they moved Johnson to FB only?I think they plan on 4 RB'S ....Redman and 2 more runners and a FB.....I also think we will keep just 5 WR'S....IMO this leaves 3 spots for TE'S, Miller gets 1 for sure and the other 2 are really up for grabs IMO.....IMO either Pope or Saunders will be cut to leave a Redzone package for Lyons.....

Haley likes a huge target and hee like s TE'S because of the Gap system....As I stated in a thread about Wallace guys who can block help the Gap system work.now uf there big and can catch plus put their hand ib the dirt or split out ,,,they have a great chance to fit in.....Lyons is such a guy IMO....

My bet is odd man out trouble man Saunders.....

You could be right, but I bet if Lyons sticks then the odd man out will be Pope. I know Pope is Haley's boy, but the team loves Wes' potential, and unless they care a lot more than I do about his suspension, will prefer him over Pope. Anyway, why wouldn't Haley like Saunders just as much? I think he'll love him once he gets to know him.

pope is nowhere near a lock. he is also not a great blocker or receiver. he had 5 false starts last year and 3 of them were drive killing. another thing lyons has going for him is the knowledge of being a WR. he very well could be kept as the 5th WR or 4th TE however you want to slice it. using him as such would allow for certain packages to be installed where he plays as the 5th wr or the pass catching TE in the redzone or whatever you want to call the position. alot will depend on clemons showing what he has in camp. lyons would make for a very versitile guy in this form. i'm not sure i'd be dumping saunders just yet either.

Find a coordinator in the league that doesn't want a tall target in the redzone. ;-)

I haven't seen it mentioned, but I imagine a big part of Pope's role is helping translate Haley's terminology to the team. It's not uncommon for coaches to bring along veterans who are familiar with their terminology and playbook. Just sayin'.

He could also lineup behind the line on defense to try and block FG's. asuming he can jump.

Saunders being suspended is a joke. He was starting to come on a bit. I dare say that if Heath wasn't such a solid TE, we might have both Saunders and Lyons as locks for spots.

@Psycho _ watch that it might get flagged if a Harbaugh complains about it!

I don't think he has a shot to make the roster.

I think the organization knows some of the situation around Wesley Saunders suspension and will give him another shot. And I don't see any way he beats out Miller or Haley's boy, Pope.

Johnson or Johnson will be the FB.

And I would even put Paulson ahead of Wes Lyons if we decide to carry 3 TE's for 4 weeks until Saunders comes back (I think we'll go with 2 TE's and 1 FB until then).

I have to disagree with you this time Del.....Mainly because Lyons didn't just get fat...He put on muscle and gained a lot of weight ....Someone had to tell him to bulk up for a move to TE....Plus in the limited stuff I saw and heard about him he is a great blocker and a fairly good route runner...

IMO the Team thought he was a fair WR but no where near polished enough to get a roster spot as a WR,however his blocking ability along with his height would make him a great fit for a TE position if he could only bulk up.....He did that and I think that will carry a lot of weight with the Team IMO....

Do you have any sources for this blocking ability he has gained? He put on 20-25lbs but at 6'8" he's still a twig and will probably struggle with leverage. My bet is if Paulson shows anything Pope is gone. He's not known for his blocking ability, his receiving skills are ok, and he's been a penalty machine.

Dude, making a couple of blocks as a WR and blocking as a TE aren't even close to being the same.

Of course they are if those blocks where against LB'S.....And they where....Actually they where harder because he had more space to cover to make the blocks....
