I like the pick. He plays hard. I hope he evolves into good depth. He's got some skills.

Special teams contributor from day 1. And hopefully a solid rotational piece who can play inside and outside.
In 2 years, if healthy, he should be a starter.

Can he quickly stop TE's and such running short routes that turn into 25 yard bulges?

    Nice read...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nf...erbig-joins-brother-with-steelers/ar-AA1ax3aa

When Nate Herbig signed as a free agent offensive lineman with the Steelers he said he was going to get in Steelers assistant GM Andy Weidl’s ear that his brother was ‘an absolute stud’ and the Steelers needed to draft him. They did on Saturday.

“I can’t really explain to you, I’m at a loss for words,” said Wisconsin outside linebacker Nick Herbig upon going to the Steelers in the fourth round as you could still hear shouting and cheering in the background at his house. “This is all I ever dreamed about. Now I get a chance to play for the Steelers, a legendary organization and I get to play with my brother. That’s all I could ask for.”

It was also reported he trained sometimes with TJ. That does not hurt if he gives a good report lol

What does this mean for what the overall plan is at OLB where do they want Nick at? Are they planning on moving him off the ball or trying to keep him on the edge? If they want him at edge, does this mean Leal will transition to the DL room and be able to train for one job or do they want them both at edge and see what a rotation would be? So many questions.

Herbig was a guy that I started watching late in the process. I think there’s a legit >50% of he sticking as a rotational backup edge who gives us quality snaps. His tape would have probably had him drafted early-mid Day 2 if he were 15 lbs. heavier. If the plan is to move him inside, the physical traits are there for that as well, and from what I’ve seen I would bank on him having the mental ability to handle the switch. I bet we love him on special teams this fall.

I was listening to Steeler Nation Radio and the OLB Coach was on and he said they see him as an OLB right now and thats where he will be and joked until he fails coaching him up and then he'd move inside. But its because they run the same type of defense in Wisconsin as they do in Pittsburgh and they see him doing well in the system at OLB. He said his short arm measurable was just a number and the guy is just a football player and knows how to get to the QB with 11 sacks and shed blocks and get to players in the backfield with 30 TFL that caught the Steelers eyes.

He can start out as rotational depth for certain but the concerns of him holding up against the run are very much real. His effort, Football IQ, grit, dedication, desire and perseverance though are not to be faulted. Try hards like him are worth keeping around as they do find some place on the roster. I would imagine him being slowly integrated as a ILB where I believe his true home is... but that is going to take some time.

    B grade for me.

Exactly the reaction I want from every…single… draft pick!

This is the mentality that will make this team A TEAM!!!

Hope Herbig turns out to be a legit #3 OLB... and possibly a #2 someday.

Lawrence Timmons played both OLB and ILB.... it's been done before in the Tomlin era. He subbed for Harrison when he was suspended and Woodley when he was hurt. Timmons wasn't as good of a OLB as he was an ILB... but he was good for a game or two. If Herbig could play both... it would be awesome.... like Leal is doing with OLB and DE.
