Round 4, No. 135 overall: Kevin Dotson, G, Louisiana

My take: After the retirement of Ramon Foster and departure of versatile backup B.J. Finney, the Steelers needed to add depth on the interior of the offensive line in the draft. Because they signed Stefen Wisniewski in free agency, there isn't necessarily a need to draft an immediate starter -- but adding competition for Wisniewski doesn't hurt. They checked that box by drafting Dotson, making him the first player drafted who wasn't invited to the NFL combine. Dotson, who did compete in the Shrine Bowl, is a durable lineman who never missed a game after his redshirting his freshman year. He played tackle and guard, but primarily played guard the last four years. He said he's most at home in the interior with his power and agility. Offensive line coach Shaun Sarrett called him a "people mover," and said it's a realistic expectation that he can come in and compete for the starting left guard spot.

The other selections so far are growing on me. This one, taking Dotson over Biadasz, was a mistake.

Seems to me the Ravens are taking this draft more seriously than we are. What else is new?

We may have a winner! Let's hope so!

    KEVIN DOTSONG, LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Steelers selected UL-Lafayette G Kevin Dotson with the No. 135 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Dotson (6’4/310) was a captain and four-year starting right guard at Louisiana who earned first-team All-American honors as a redshirt senior. He graded out as PFF’s No. 1 overall interior lineman with elite marks as a run blocker but still went uninvited to the NFL Combine. On tape, he stands out as a big and powerful presence, although he looks like a limited athlete with questionable balance. Dotson’s size, leadership, and on-field production make him an intriguing backup with starting potential, but he will already be 24 years old as a rookie.

I just mean I think the Rats are making the better draft selections lately. Granted they're taking more hyped names but still.

They just have more picks, they are trading back while we are trading up (Bush) or trading for players during the season (Minkah and Vannett)

They also traded former first round TE Hurst to Atlanta for a second in this draft and they are experts at manipulating the comp pick formula.

Much as I do not like the Ravens I really do admire their draft strategy. They are building tremendous depth

I took a few minutes to watch his App State game. The power when going 1 on 1 vs. the guy lined up opposite him is very evident. In a phone booth he bullies defenders. He didn’t look very smooth in space though.

Arguably the best Run Blocking Interior Offensive Lineman in the entire class. Outside of his age, his limited athleticism will be something to monitor but he does offer some nice value as a road grading lineman. I do not expect him to beat out either Feiler or Stefen but he is another emergency option should something happen to either or.

I would not be surprised if he is the Day 1 starter at LG.

Assuming they keep Feiler at RT, I think Dotson has a real chance to take the job.

In that one game that I watched he kind of reminded me of a younger Ramon Foster

That comes with responsible management of assets. You save picks for deep drafts rather than throw them away for half a season of a second rate TE when you are using a 3rd string QB.

Yes the Vannette trade is regrettable looking back. They really could have used that pick yesterday

We are in good shape. With Wisniewski added and Dotson not to mention Keenoy and Montano and hassenauer. All center capable. Montana can play guard too. Coyle, Grey, Banner, Chuks. We have a nice group that was quietly added without much notice.
