I was talking to a friend of mine a couple of weeks back who is a HUGE Buckeyes fan and Shazier came up. He follows Buckeyes football very closely and said this guy is the total package. Great player on the field and great person off the field. My friend hates the Steelers and I told him that it would be something if one of his beloved Buckeyes ended up with the NFL team he hates the most. Well, look what happened, lol. I had to call my friend and rub it in last night.

I know he hasn't played a down in the NFL yet, but...

In my opinion, Ryan Shazier is the best defensive player we have drafted since Troy Polamalu. He has Timmons' athleticism (probably better) and Polamalu's instincts. At 6'1 237, he may be considered a bit small (I don't know if I agree with that), but that is really the only knock on him. As I said in another thread, I wouldn't be surprised if Shazier is just as if not more productive than Khalil Mack. I considered Shazier a Top 10 prospect and never understood why the mainstream draft sites didn't have him ranked higher.

CJ Mosely is 6'2 and 237, nfl.com has Patrick Willis listed as 6'1 and 240.

Exactly, Bowman is 6'0 240, etc.... To me, Shazier's size is not an issue.

I could have swore I seen a few people saying shazier was too small and they wanted Mosley, when they are basically the same size.

The Steelers did say he probably needs to get a little bigger. Shazier is the same size as Timmons was when he got drafted.

Take a look at Shazier at his pro day with his shirt off and then tell me he's too small. The guy is RIPPED!

I have not watched a ton of tape on him, but my biggest concern on him is not when he is in space, it is when he is covered up. Can he get off of blocks from guys who are 315 to 330? If he can, I have no problem with this pick.

that's where our safeties come into play. troy, shark and Mitchell. if he's the guy that's then taking up blockers, just like the DL does for the LB'ers, then these guys are some of the best when it comes to making the tackle, and they can get there fast.

shazier can also get to the ball before those 315-330 lb. guys can touch him. speed baby. speed kills on defense and we have added some. up front, in the middle and at the back of our D.

I think the size concerns stem from his playing weight of around 220 lbs. But he's 237 now. It's not one of those, "Oh gee he'll have to put on weight and who knows how that will affect his speed" things. He already put on the weight and STILL ran in the 4.3s. He did it. It's over. Catch up already, people! I'm glad the Steelers did.

I'm pretty excited about the pick. I know a lot of people, including myself, weren't expecting it to work out quite this way, but I really think Shazier is going to prove to be a great pick in the years to come.

Is Shazier available for all of training camp? Don't OSU guys sometimes have to turn up late?

As of last year, OSU is on the regular schedule. He should be there for all of it, OTAs and everything.

Love this line from the Trib. Not something I would have expected to hear from Shazier's father:

"“Ryan has an indescribable passion for the game,” said the elder Shazier, who serves as team chaplain for the Miami Dolphins. “He was bred and trained to be an assassin on the football field.”"

Larry Foote played at 6-0 234, James Harrison was short at 6 ft but heavier around 248, they can put on muscle weight but they cant put on height.........
