BUT SHOULD IT MATTER? Can the bad backup qb play effect the chances of the young guys on offense? Can we get any real answers without the stars?

To borrow a phrase from Coach Tomlin, "I'd have a hard time caring less . . . " about our preseason W/L record.

Winning breeds a winning mentality. Playing football you always want to win regardless if it's against your own players or in preseason games. I never liked Mike Tomlin philosophy per se during the preseason. You might want to at least say you want to win the games but of course you want to evaluate your talent. It's probably the reason we start so slow during the regular season. For the last few years the first regular season game looks like a preseason game

I look at the score when the starters come out....
Once the back ups are in, I look more at technique and execution

I've been poking fun at the Lions all week so why not again they year they went 0-16 they were undefeated in the preseason. I agree with blackandgoldpatrol, first string win the match ups and everyone else show what you are learning

If that is the case. Can we just forfeit them all and go into the season fully healthy?

I don't think Tomlin has ever said he didn't care if they won during the preseason.

The 'phrase' I borrowed from Tomlin was merely, "I'd have a hard time caring less." I was referring to our W/L record. I honestly couldn't care less if we go 0-4 during the preseason. When he made that comment it was in reference to somebody from the league criticizing the way our players were tackling (about the time Harrison was getting fined right and left for hits to the head).

We almost lost 5 last season. The only win came against Green Bay, I think. I just hope to see the starters play well, then I just root for the guys trying like heck, and hope they put forth a winning effort, and then I pray for good luck on injuries.

See Green Bay last year, when Steelers lost Pouncey, and the Packers lost Jordy Nelson for the season.

Oh boy, you're fairly new here, you've missed some doozy debates over preseason record.

I'm of the belief that the win/loss record couldn't have less of an effect on the outcome of the regular season. When your starters play so little of the snaps, it's hard for me to get upset about wins and losses.

Preseason is and always will be an evaluation tool for the new players. Game 3 of preseason is a tune up for the starters.

I've mellowed out as I got older... As I a kid I could've swore it was the pre determining factor hahahahaha.
Nice for the young ins to feel a W, but in the end the only thing that matters is staying healthy and finding the next diamond

To care about wins and losses in preseason is just very naive. Like, dobbler-33, it's something I cared about when I was a kid but, as you get older, you understand the insignificance of it.

My girl bought be a ticket for tomorrow night's game and I passed on it. I have no interest in dealing with the drive, the traffic, the weather(?), etc, to watch a bunch of guys who won't even be on our final roster go through the motion against the other teams' scrubs.

I remember one of our strong seasons (perhaps our Super Bowl-winning 2005) that our first-team offense didn't pick up a single first down in the preseason.

The '72 Dolphins were 3-3 in the preseason, the 2008 Lions, who went 0-16 finished the preseason 4-0, the 2009 1-15 Rams were 3-1 in the preseason, the 1-15 1989 Dallas Cowboys went 3-1.

    Pointless.

I don't think the record really means anything as most have stated ...I do think you want to play winning Football, as some of these so called scrubs will almost certainly be called on during the season to help us win games ....Getting them in Stadium experience is very valuable,it is also a very good tool for the Coaches to see how they perform for final roster decisions...

There you go over-hyping what you feel is the importance or lack of to a part of the season and how the team can best use it or not.

I don't think the record means much, but Pittsburgh did finish 0-4 in 2013 and looked horrible doing it. Then we started the season 0-4. If we look good and lose, I think it's fine. Obviously, if we look bad and lose, that's where I worry.

Preseason is about evaluation of depth. Winning is just a bonus.

Like most, I don't care about wins and losses in preseason. However, the way we play is important. What happens consistently in preseason can often be the canary in the coal mine, and we need to make changes quicker in response to what happens in preseason games. Last year in the preseason we had a huge issue letting opposing TEs run uncovered all over the field. Forward to week 1, and we leave Gronk uncovered all night. The problem was there for all to see, but it didn't get semi-fixed until later in the season.

With 90 players in camp 37 will be cut so pre season games are their only chance to earn a roster spot, line coaches like to get their starting lineup in for a few snaps to see if their technique has carried over from the prior season, and no doubt our secondary needs as much playing time as they can get, and 3 QBs have to fight it out to get a job because 1 of them will be cut, and only 1 will be a backup to Ben, so i'm going to pay close attention to the rookies and the rest of the camp no names to see who is impressive enough in 4 games to make the roster in the final cut, the score doesnt mean anything but any win is always nice .....

It's moronic to go into a season with no options behind Ben. It is almost guaranteed Ben will miss a game or two. That's when you need your back up to win games. The difference between making the playoffs and not always comes down to a game or two.

After watching tonight's game, does anyone one seriously want to convince me the score of these games is important to either team?
