Not that I disagree with you (actually agree with many points) but using that logic would you have paid $262.5M for a QB that never won a playoff game (never even played in a playoff game, 3 yrs younger than Watt).

Why isn't anyone posting about Minka and his 18 million/year salary?
We have the players in place to move Minka.

Watts will be a shell of his former self by the time the Steelers have a team that can get out the AFC. Think about this Kenny Pickett will retire with more Super Bowl rings than TJ Watts.

Disagree. Elite players often begin producing early on, and their teams benefit from them outproducing their rookie contracts. Watt had 13 sacks and six forced fumbles in his second season - yet it would be another four years before he accounted for over $8M against their cap. Suffice to say the team banked a lot during his first five years. Watt is still producing at an exceptionally high level. Even if they end up overpaying for his last couple of seasons they still come out ahead, or at worst break even.

I agree some what with you, but as we have seen with Ben the last 5-8 years he couldn't get us over the top either.

Said this at the end of another sorry playoff game last season and was called a troll. lol
If you can get a first and a 3rd for Watt I would do it in a second.

Yes he is an all time great player, but he is not helping the team get over the hump.

Does Watt have a no trade clause or not in his current contract? If he does that will severely limit who we trade him too and ultimately his trade value. I don’t blame him for requesting a trade if he does. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pickens does the same. If we would trade him at this point you have to commit to the rebuild and stock up on picks. I believe he would still command a 1 and 2 at least.

I never thought we would be that team to trade away star players but we have messed up the QB position so bad and have seemingly been running in place for how long now.

I think I just read a kindergarten essay. I’d have to give it a D- only because nobody is allowed to fail anymore. It really could have been a C grade if the title wasn’t so misleading. This really has a chance to be an A+ though, if it were Pimply Dan written in disguise.

Yeah, and all the entire Patriot dynasty with Brady at QB. Defense won those SBs more than Brady did.

I'm not sure I understand how this pertains to the point I was making. I was speaking solely to the value proposition for a team that drafted and retained an elite player through the entirety of their career.

i feel the same...i hate the thought of him not being a steeler...by far my favorite player on the current team, and one of my all time favorites...but, the steelers are not going to a SB anytime soon..Tomlin wasted the best years TJ had to give us, and he desrves to play and have a chance at a ring. no hate on him if he desires to do this. plenty of hate for Tomlin, tho

I know there are 2 Ireland's but I hope the whole country is taking pride in Rory Mcllroy becoming the 6th player in history to have won all 4 Majors. He has won 3 times this year taking the 5th Major as I call it, The Players.

    Now, back to football.

If not for TB's D making 4-5 huge stops he'd have never got #7.

That's the owners and how the market reacts to their idiocy and panic. There are fight now 5 positions that command the market, QB, LT, Edge, WR, and C, you can argue about different position, but I would say they are player generated...I.E a DB, TE, is so good they establish their own market, the QB position is so sparce that guys who have never won a PO game are getting highest in the game contracts (nest man up) because the team feels they are good enough to build around and try and find one better. I get what Thor said, over produced 1st contract, but he was paid with the highest contract (at that moment), the market changes each season, do we start adjusting a contract each year to keep a play the highest paid? That's ridicules of course, but for me the same can be said if we over pay at the end of a career to 'equal out the underpaid years'. TJ will likely get a great contract, no problems, but with any player I think you have to look realistically where the team is at, what you are trying to accomplish, and how you get there. TJ may indeed be a huge part of that plan in a 3 year window, and no current edge you would draft is going to accomplish what he does, but if you got 2 to 3 higher ranked picks (probably not) you have to look at the overall structure of your team, strategies matter. Under MT this team will always be D loaded, but look at many teams that are true SB contenders, and the O is priority. Until we realise that an 80-20 cap split (just my made up number) is not going to get you where you want to go.

Watt knows he will never win a championship with the clown car show run by Tomlin. I hope he gets out of Pittsburgh and gets on a team with a realistic chance of winning it all. He deserves it for his fierce competitive spirit.

Strategies do matter, and like I said, Watt is still a top five EDGE. Say what you will about the stagnant rut of non-losing seasons they're in, the org expects to be in contention for the playoffs every year and Watt gives them the best chance of doing that at a price they can afford to pay. An extension would likely take him out to his age 35 season He probably won't be top five for the latter part of it, but he wouldn't need to be. But they would front-load it like they did with his current contract, allowing them to get out of the last two years without incurring much in the way of dead money.
