I know it's really hard to find time to track down game tape and sit and watch it, and as a result we forge opinions based on other people's opinions or a couple of highlight reels. I thought compiling real game film here might make it easier for people, as well as give us a thread to discuss each player. Hopefully by looking at these instead of highlight reels, we can get a more accurate picture of what these guys bring to the table. I love highlights, but only when I want to get pumped about a player, not when I want to really learn. Anyway, it's another thing to do to help last us through the summer.

I hope you find the time to watch some and let us know what you think!

    My thoughts:

    Pros

-Accuracy seems good from 0-12 yards. They do so much "little stuff", designed screens and extremely short passes, he's used to hitting receivers in stride from short distances.
-Good pocket awareness. Feels pressure, usually good about moving to the right places in the pocket.
-Is not a total statue and not afraid to run, or QB sneak. Smart about sliding when he runs.
-Seems like mostly good decisions on who to throw to. Throws the ball away well. Can't find much fault with him there. Overall seems like an intelligent player who knows what he's doing.

    Cons

-Accuracy beyond 10 yards is iffy at best, and often terrible. No deep game. Hit perhaps 3 receivers in stride on deep balls on all the tape above combined.
-Not athletic by NFL QB standards. Won't outrun anybody except slower linemen.
-Talented receiving group did more bailing out than screwing over. Everybody except that #19. Man, that guy really suc:eek:

Overall, even with all that great stuff I said about him, I'm not happy with this pick. I know smarts are the most important thing for a QB, and "Joe Montana didn't have a great arm," blah blah blah. But this guy just doesn't look like he can get it done. Maybe the idea is that he's not a project, but strictly backup material, who will come in when Ben goes down, hand the ball off, do some short passes, and not turn it over. Sort of Charlie Batch stuff. But you just can't be a real quarterback in this league if you can't make the big throws. I mean, 3rd and 8, I don't trust this guy to make a throw. And that's at the college level. How's he going to do it in the NFL? I know he can learn, get better, but... at throwing? You could be the smartest QB in the world and still be worse than Bruce Gradkowski if you can't throw an accurate pass.

I really hope this guy gets it together. Here I am saying he won't make it because he can't make even moderately difficult throw against mediocre competition. But I can't predict the future. His college offense is wonky. Maybe Haley's will help him turn on the light.

I should clarify and say that considering he hasn't even started his rookie training camp yet, it'd be pretty stupid to give up on him. I have plenty of hope for the guy because he has good tools. I'll be excited to watch him in preseason. I just won't be terribly surprised if it doesn't work out is all.

His decision making is why he dropped in the draft, was making poor decisions in big moments. And strange that you have him not being able to make throws over 10 yards because that is one of his positives according to some of the profiles out there, he can make all the throws. However what he has been doing in camp so far backs up your evaluation. I wasn't pleased spending a 4th round pick on a QB but from some of the things I have learned about him afterwards, he seemed like a guy that could be pretty good. So far though he hasn't been impressing anyone in camp. I normally have a lot of faith in our FO but outside of TB & Ben, they don't have a good track record with QB's.

Not to make light of the thread, but my point in the Tom Brady video is just to show what a great attitude and great coaching can do. I would say that Landry Jones has better raw tools than Tom Brady or Joe Montana, but those two ar arguably the best two QBs of ALL TIME. I'm not comparing Jones to either of them, that would be ludicrous, but if he comes in with a can-do attitude, responds well to top-flite coaching AND the switch really goes on with this kid at some point he could develop into a very good NFL QB. Then again, he could be the next Kent Graham or Jim Miller.

Thanks for sharing your insight on some of the young guys, Snack. I'm enjoying it.

the kid still threw for near 17,000 yards with a 63.6 percentage and near 2,200 attempts and 123 TD's to 55 interceptions. that not to shabby however he's getting it done.

i truely think this kid ran the offense todd haley wants ben to run.

Hmm, I guess we finally have some proof that me watching 30 minutes of tape is better than all the scouts in the world working for 4 years. :dancing:

This is the ONLY tape I've seen on him, and it's the only thing I based my opinion on. I didn't even read any scouting reports on the guy. All I saw was that some pundits love him, others hate him. However, I did make sure to include two bowl games, and games from each of the last three seasons, because everyone said you have to go back to '10 and '11 to see why he was originally thought so highly of. To me he looks good for stretches at a time, then throws an interception. Or if he doesn't throw an interception, he throws an inaccurate pass that Stills/Brown made a nice play on. In that particular tape, I saw him make plenty of good decisions. His receivers were getting open, and he was navigating the pocket and getting the ball out on time. Seemed like when he was turning it over or just throwing any deep ball, inaccuracy was the problem.

Take the INT at 3:30 of the Iowa State game, for example. I bet a lot of people would look at that and say it was poor judgment because he didn't see the safety, and got baited. I say throwing it to Stills was the right idea, but it was thrown too short, too far inside, and too low. If he bombs that far, outside, and high, it's totally in play. Stills is wide open. He's 2 yards ahead of the CB. If Jones puts that on the 20 yard line, halfway between the numbers and sideline, and not on a rope, I don't think the safety can get to it. Worst case, it's not an easy INT and he'll have to battle Stills. It's easier to see on the replay.

What do you think from watching, BF?

If there's one thing Spaeth has proven, it's that being really big doesn't make you a big target. I was reminded of this fact re-watching the Jets game that Heath missed a couple years ago. But hopefully Brown will be a legitimate threat.
