Vince showed up at camp toting the strap a couple years ago, and he has regressed ever since.

He went from 8 sacks to 5 and his snaps didn’t go up, they went down by 41. Then last year his snaps were cut more than half and only had 3 sacks.

Still has more than anyone since 2017

wrong blast. 734 in 2017. 743 in 2018. 4.5 sacks in 2018 with more snaps. Also 13 less tackles with more snaps. He had 2.5 sacks last year, and no the snaps were not cut more than in half of the year before. He had 743 in 2018 and 396 last year.

    PFF has him logged as:

    2017
    785 snaps
    8 sacks
    6 hits
    89 hurries

    2018
    744 snaps
    5 sacks
    6 hits
    8 hurries

    2019
    379 snaps
    3 sacks
    7 hits
    9 hurries

Snaps went down every year and a significant amount from 2018 to 2019. Not more than half, maths be hard sometimes but still the obvious point was a big drop off in snaps is why he ended up with only 3 sacks.

Vince is overpaid but I disagree with you on how poor he plays and to get back to Thorns question of what his roll is, it’s getting after the QB, he’s good at that and better at run defense than he gets credit for. Not good enough for what he is paid though.

Pro football reference has it different. PFF takes into account special teams snaps. So no math isn't a problem.

Ok, he went from 119 pass rushing snaps to 59 from 2018 to 2019. Thats more than half.

The math quip was a dig at myself.

PFR has 70 blitzes in 2018 and 24 in 2019. Defensive snaps went up in 2018 with nearly half the sacks and less tackles in more defensive snaps played. As I said (nearly) half the production in sacks from his big season of 2017. 8 to 4.5 in 2018 and from 4.5 to 2.5 in 2019. A lot less blitzes in 2019 but still almost 400 snaps on defense last year.

I was explaining why he only had 3 sacks last year which isn’t bad for how little he was used. No matter how many different ways the stats are listed, he had less opportunites last year.

Also none of this changes the fact that he has the most sacks since 2017 for an off the ball LB. 8 or 5, both good sack totals.

Looking at the overall work of Vince Williams, he's serviceable in certain situations, but he's no threat.

Agree, there is no team afraid to run at VW98. But right now he is the best we have. Everyone was enamored with the return of "the run game" in the NFL but then again people want to cut ILBs that cannot defend the pass when the same ILB's strengths are rushing the passer and taking on the run game.

Lets get a true NT to help the run D.....never happens..You hate VW98 that is obvious. But the team regularly overpays for guys that stay with the team. Get over it....it will happen again to some other sub prime player.

VW98 fills a role, as much as you hate it, a defense needs those role players. Just like hockey.

Does your hate stem from the player or the contract?

The contract first. Over rated next. He does nothing to make our defense better. My problem is they can't get rid of him because of the contract. They knew when LJ Fort took over for him and then barron, now we have to play him until UG3 can take the spot over. Hopefully sooner rather than later and no I don't have to get over it. He is a weak link in an evolving defense.

I am wondering this as well. Why UG3 has not seen more action is confusing to me. That said, Vince will be needed against teams like Baltimore and Tennesee (eventually).

When Vince is on the field he makes plays, plain and simple.

not in pass coverage. Anyone in the NFL can get a sack of they are untouched rushing the passer. It doesn't make them good. Neither of our linebackers are very good in coverage. Neither should be covering wide receivers ever. That's on butler.

Very well? He's given up 2 TDs in pass defense. He is ranked 196th in tackles. If every team had 4 linebackers starting and vw was dead last amongst those starters he would rank 128th. Bostic is top 10 with 2 sacks just like vince. LJ Fort ranks above vw. We have gotten so used to average of below average play at that position we think it's good. It's a linebackers job to make tackles. No he is not playing very well. Everyone will get on me for just hating on vince but the numbers are not there. Running up in a hole to be blocked is not good linebacker play. 4 tackles a game average is not very well. A TD in 2 out of 3 games given up in coverage is not playing very well. I'm sorry my friends but I don't agree. We can do much better.

LOL. No my friend just wanting better play from the position. I'd be fine if he was a backup making backup money as he should be. He is one of the worst starting linebackers in the league production wise but not money wise. We are back doing with him what we tried for nearly two years to get away from. I also don't think he helps us or Bush be better.
