Agree! Eliminating the draft would be absolutely stupid! Even with the level playing field created by the salary cap, many teams would be at a distinct disadvantage. The draft is one of the greatest things about the NFL and a fan favorite so I don’t see it ever happening. I disagree on not being able trade draft picks though.

I just hope the NFL does not turn into the NBA with the trades and players manipulating their way off of a team. I wouldn’t mind however adjusting the draft to more of a lottery like the NBA. It prevents the consistent bottom feeder teams from being garaunteed to draft top three ever year or a team supposedly tanking for a QB. With the franchise QB such an important element within the NFL and becoming ever more important I can definitely see teams tanking for a generational talent.

Hell I don't think there should even be comp picks... how the heck do Ravens wind up with an extra 3rd round pick every year it seems like? It is bad for parody when you think about it.

In the 90s and early 2000's the Steelers really needed the comp picks because we never resigned anybody. I don't know if Steelers were strapped for cash or they were just cheap back then, but we have no problem signing FA's today. Is it really needed?

I personally don’t believe the Ratturds should be allowed to participate in the draft so…

How are the Steelers cheap when they year in and year out spend up to or near to the cap?

I'm talking about in the 90s and early 2000's when they let all their FA's walk. After Heinz Field was built suddenly they were able to resign a few guys and it has consistently gotten better since then.

I don't know how old you are if you remember that or not?

I do. So the NFL did not get a salary cap until 1994. Before that the Steelers were constantly one of the lowest payrolls in the league mainly due to the fact that Pittsburgh is such a small market. Unlike the Penguins who spent themselves into bankruptcy before the NHL salary cap trying to keep up with the large markets, the Steelers choose to be financially responsible. Once the salary cap was implemented the Steelers spent what they could until the NFL fully implemented equitable revenue sharing by the end of the 90's. That period of 1994 - 1999 the Steelers spent what they could without going in the red which is the proper way to run a business. And yes, since the Rooney's were not the only owner of the Steelers they were required to make a profit and pay the other owners/investors.

The NFL and NHL saved their respective sports in Pittsburgh by implementing a salary cap and proper revenue sharing. Not to go off topic but its why until MLB does the same thing the Pirates will always be in the bottom 10 in spending.

I remember when Rooney was giving an interview while the Penguins were going through their bankruptcy in the early 2000's and during the NHL lockout, he said that if it wasn't for the NFL salary cap and revenue structure the Steelers would never be able to compete in the current NFL against large markets.

TLDR, no, the Steelers were not cheap...they were keeping their business out of debt.

Yeah, that is the cause of it then ... but 94-99 Steelers were crying poor and that led to the comp pick system being introduced. But it seems that we really don't need it now because we have the cashflow.

Yeah it helps us out, but if parody is the goal in 2022 do we even need it anymore? 3rd round comp picks is just crazy man. 3rd round pick is worth a lot. There is no way to truly calculate that.

I totally hear you on MLB. It is kinda worse with Soccer overseas. There is so much soccer being played and so many leagues, but the teams with little money don't really have chance. And once you make it to Champions League you are just making even more money so success just compounds success.

Thats why I have to laugh when people still to this day say the Rooneys are cheap. They say the same thing about Nutting. No they are just prudent business people. The MLB will never be interesting to me unless they implement a salary cap for the reason.
