I have to say his play this season has been better than expected, he's tied for the team lead in sacks with 6. It's a good thing they didn't sign Donta Hightower in FA, Vince is cheaper and healthier. Vince is well aware of his doubters who didn't think he could replace Timmons, he brings it up on social media.

I have to say that, while I was never in favor of replacing Vince all together via the Dont'a fiasco (always anxious of former pats players anyways), I was also concerned that Vince's limited athletic abilities would hinder Pittsburgh's defensive capabilities.

Glad I was wrong on the athletic front. He still is no Ryan Shazier. To his credit though, who is? (Deion Jones has the speed to match but that is it). Vince is a very nice compliment to Ryan. Vince and Ryan are like "Thunder and Lightning".

Here is hoping he continues to not only maintain his steady play but aim for greater heights. :smiley1:

Give me a player with athletic limitations and a BIG HEART over an athletic freak with NO HEART any day!

To whom are you referring to via the latter of that statement?

No one in particular, but we've seen quite a few athletic freaks in the NFL over the years who seemed to have it all. Good size, great speed, strength. But when push came to shove, they just didn't have the heart, the drive, the determination to build a successful career. Justin Gilbert was one good example. Seemed to have it all from an athletic perspective but no heart. VW may not be the most gifted athlete, but he leaves his heart out on the field every single week.

To Justin's credit, had he been drafted by us, I believe his story is quite different.

"The Factory Of Saddness" has been proven to be a career destroying place. Players like Tashan Gipson and Joe Haden are considered exceptions and not rules.

Maybe. The quality of the organization around you certainly helps. But in the end, heart and talent show up no matter the organization. Look at players like Joe Thomas and Joe Haden. I think both of those guys have a tremendous amount of heart. Haden's not the fastest guy and his speed coming out of college was a weakness (according to most scouts), but he had a lot of heart. How hard did it have to be for those two guys to go onto the field every single week knowing they were probably going to take a good old fashioned butt whipping?

All the more reason I did say Haden was an exception and not a rule.

All I am saying is that Gilbert did quit on himself but I still wonder what could have been had Pittsburgh drafted him.

Seems to be what most have a problem with Big Red as well, but I digress.

We'll never know, but the Steelers have had their share of high round busts as well. See Jones, Jarvis.

Not to the extent of the Browns though.

Been on the Vince bandwagon since we drafted him. Always felt he was underrated around here.

Good to see him deliver in the starting role :applaud:

I've always wondered if Pitts brought Hightower in just to drive his price up for New England and try to impact their cap space.

Always loved VW98, glad he is doing good as a starter.

I didn't think VW could fill the role as a starter, and I have said it in other threads man was I wrong. He has been playing good and I am happy to eat crow. Keep it going 98........

Timmons time was up. Cement shoes in coverage. Glad the Donta Hightower thing didn't pan out.
Williams is a lunch pale player and cap friendly. You need these types of players. He mans the position well...

I never understood the pursuit of Hightower. They had invested in an extension for Vince Williams, but they were going to sit him? Or maybe move Shazier outside?

I thought maybe they were going to use Donta outside, someone here planted that idea in my head and the more I thought about it and the situation, the more I thought thats what they were going to do. Or move him around a lot.

Yeah I saw that today Heyward has 7, still impressive for a ILB to have 6 at this point in the season.

I would put Hines Ward in that category of a guy with athletic limitations, but he had a big heart.

I really enjoy watching Vince play. He plays with so much heart every play. I really think his play motivates others on our defense to play as hard as he does every play.

    That's not really saying much.

If Shazier could tackle properly, he'd win DPOY. lol

I like that fact that Williams is signed for 2 more seasons after this one at a friendly salary cap number.

Steelers gave him a shot, he and he hasn't disappointed.

Going to need that space for Shazier, he's going to make a lot.

Not his strongest suit. But, the guy is a game changer with turnovers he creates, often at critical times in the game.
