i think he is going to do great replacing Timmons in this defense. Williams is explosive and an extremely hard hitter. He is going to add to the nasty factor in our defense that imo they finally started to show again last year. We lost the nasty factor there for awhile. That hit you in the mouth mentality. I blame Goodell but that's another discussion. I think he defense actually got upgraded today when you look at the two of them right now.

I disagree that Williams will be an upgrade over Timmons.

I'd say he's equal to 2015-2016 Timmons, but will never be Timmons circa 2008-2014

i saw more range in the coverage game from williams last year than ever before. he did have offseason shoulder surgery i saw somewhere. not sure if it was just a clean up or what. timmons was pretty special for a lot of years though. he will be missed as are all previous stars.

I have faith in both VW98 and Dirty Red. That said, a pick will need to be made in the first 3 rounds if no FA is targeted.

    Some targets...

Reddick or Cunningham in rnd 1
McMillan or Walker Jr in rnd 2
    E. Lee in rnd 3
and one of my sleepers Reeves-Maybin. all over the board because he missed most of last season with injury. Under the radar and may be had in later rounds??

The Steelers are idiots if they draft a ILB in round 1, they gave Vince Williams that contract now let him earn it.

Williams doesn't need to be a superstar as long as Shazier can finally stay on the field. He just needs to play solid football and do his job, which he's more than capable of doing

They don't let Timmons walk unless they know they have someone comparable to replace him. It wasn't a $20 or $30 million deal, it was, all told, $11 mil over two years. If they believed Timmons would leave that big a hole, they would have ponied up.

In my view leaving Timmons on the field in sub packages was a two-edged sword last season. Yes he had the experience, leadership and ability to line up teammates, but he was also very limited in space. My hope is that VW will come off the field in sub packages, and we'll get quicker.

From what they paid williams 6 mill 3 years they evidently didnt value him very much either, williams wont lead the defense in tackles like timmons has been doing for years, so they have their poor mans inside backer, good luck with that this year.....

Timmons is going to be missed IMO. The window is closing fast, and Timmons deal was not crazy.

Good point.....maybe Tomlins loyalty lead to keeping Timmons on the field more than he should of been. A extra safety can be used in those sub package situations.....Obi anyone? or JRMaybin later in the draft?

I think it was probably 1) comfort that he knew the assignments (his and his teammates'), and 2) a question who on last year's roster he would put on the field in place of Timmons at the time. The 2016 roster didn't really have a more viable option - Golden? Thomas? VW? Tyler? The extra safety and alternate LB options weren't great last year. We need help in those areas.

Now Reddick becomes an option for sure in rd 1. Vince will start but there is no depth behind Shazier (who gets hurt often) and Vince.

I dont think he will equal timmons 15 and 16 seasons because those two years timmons led the defense in tackles...

What's going to be scary is what our ILB depth looks like once Shazier gets his usual injury.

I still disagree. I believe Timmons at 30 is still a more athletic and better player than Williams. Timmons was a player that did it all. Timmons probably had a better year last year than Williams will ever have.

Vince is a back up and pretty good special teams player. The only way he will see the field as a starter is if the Steelers can't find a better replacement.

With the loss of Timmons the Steelers also lose depth and a rock solid starter that rarely missed any time due to injury.

Vince is better than a back up. He'll take over and he will do well there. Solid player.

I still expect them to draft a ILB in the mold of Shazier who eventually will take the reigns.

The Steelers won't be looking for a better player, the plan all along was to transition the job to Williams, hence his contract and the fact that the Steelers showed no interest in re-signing Timmons.

    Someone brought up tackles before.

    Over the last 2 season
    Snaps:
    Timmons 1057+950=2007 snaps
    Williams 191+268=459 snaps

    Tackles:
    Timmons 114(78 solo)+119(77 solo)=233(155)
    Williams 47 (37 solo)+ 46(34 solo)=93(71)

    Last 2 seasons summary
    Timmons
    .11 total tackles per snap
    .07 solo tackles per snap
    Williams
    .20 total tackles per snap
    .15 solo tackles per snap
