This is going to be a good year for us to trade down in the 1st round. The Patriots are starting to really show the results of Belichick trading down and getting extra picks in recent years. There's going to be a lot of value in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, would be nice to slide down a few spots and get an extra 3rd rounder

Too early to tell, but I would probably like any of these guys in the 2nd....

    Nate Orchard OLB Utah
    Kevin Johnson CB Wake Forest
    Alex Carter CB Stanford
    Hau'Oli Kikaha OLB Washington
    Anthony Harris S Virginia Tech
    Malcolm Brown DT Texas
    Jordan Phillips DT Oklahoma
Ameer Abdullah RB Nebraska (go big red lol)

Ton of players that are 2nd rnd worthy that I didn't even mention. Seems like its the best round to draft.

A RB in the 2nd no way, too many needs on defense.

That is my Nebraska plug for this year. :applaud: Last year, I wanted WR Quincy Enunwa in the 7th, but he went to the Jets. Later found out he got an assault charge sometime during the season - yikes!

Next year, I'll push for WR Westerkamp and WR Pierson-El in two years. If they declare, that is.

You can find a good RB in the 5th rd or later.

sure you can but not at the level of the top guys generally. we have seen that here for years until we spent a draft pick on bell. dwyer was a 6th. redman was an UDFA. mendy was a 2nd. so if that's the case we might as well hang on to harris, perkins and archer as our backups. if you want a quality guy you spend a draft pick to get one. bell isn't going to hold up forever with all the touches he gets. he's gotten hurt in each of his first two years.

We don't need another franchise RB. We need better role players to spell Bell, and fill in if he gets banged up again. You can get those players later in the draft - and even after the draft ends. In fact, there are some franchise backs who didn't even get drafted. You can also find quality backup backs in free agency without breaking the bank. We did that last offseason, but just happened to grab one who developed a whiney attitude problem.

    Oh BTW - Mendy was a 1st, not a 2nd.

yea, my bad limas was the #2 that year.

as I said it just depends on what the team wants. it also allows other teams to get quality RB's. it depends on if they go BPA too.

all I know is we had a major drop off when our franchise RB went down. it sent this whole high powered offense into a tailspin. you can play it several ways if your the coach or GM. do you prolong the life of your offense with two good backs splitting the carries or one good back and a shorter career and a big drop off the older he gets. a RB's shelf life in the NFL isn't very long and we are going into year 3 of bells. just sayin.

They have a franchise back in Bell they can't afford to spend a high draft pick on a backup. Andre Williams of the Giants was like a 5th rd pick last season, and ended up starting. Defense wins championships, that's what they need to concentrate on.

they have been drafting defense and they are not getting a lot of bang for their buck. we have 3#1's and a #2 at LB and a 1 and 2 at DE. it's not like they haven't been drafting defense. you don't let your offense go just to flood your team with defense in the draft.

They have 3 Pro Bowl skill players on offense, they need to find some on defense. I'm not saying ignore the offense but this should be a draft that's geared towards fixing the defense.

Yep, they need a guy they can plug in if Bell goes down and not scrap the whole offensive game plan. We all just witnessed this, he doesn't have to be as good as Bell, just versatile like him.

I haven't spent too much time evaluating prospects, and likely won't, but one of the few RB's I've checked out is high on my wish list:

    Buck (Javorius) Allen, USC

Watching film on him reminds me a lot of Bell. If we want someone that may be able to perform well in all three phases like bell can, and don't want to invest heavily in doing so, Allen may be it.

I agree, we need someone that can come in and not have the gameplan altered because Bell is out. Apparently Josh Harris isn't that guy, since Tate came in off the street and supplanted him with 3 days of practice.

I think the problem is that we went from a franchise back to JV players. We completely skipped over having legit backup caliber backs available because we did nothing to replace Blount, who would have been the natural 1st and 2nd down fill in guy had he not been a <insert bad word>. We don't need to draft another franchise back to back up our franchise back. We need a group of backup role players who can, on a committee basis, do much of what he does. Those guys are available later in the draft and for minimal dollars via free agency.

I'm a USC fan, and have watched Allen play the last 2 seasons he's a good downhill runner. If he's available in the fifth round then draft him.

this is the reason why I don't think we can overlook one of these good RB's in this draft.

Up to two game suspension looms over Le'Veon Bell, and the Steelers, who are 0-4 without him

The Steelers lost all four career games they've played without Le'Veon Bell since drafting him in 2013. They're likely to be without him for a game, possibly even two, in 2015.

This road is a dark one, but one that's familiar to the Steelers.
"What will happen if Le'Veon gets hurt?"
Replace "if" with "when" and "hurt" with "suspended," those are the only material changes to that looming offseason concern from 2014 to 2015.
Last year, the team solidified Bell with a capable back-up. They just didn't seem to give LeGarrette Blount the impression he was strictly a back-up. A financially prudent course of action will be to draft a running back, and have that player compete with the Josh Harris's and the Dri Archers of the team.
That's similar to what it was in 2013 when fans talked themselves into getting excited about the Jonathan Dwyer vs. Isaac Redman battle of running back supremacy.
Dwyer didn't make the team, and Redman was benched early in the year, only to force the team to bring Dwyer back. The result, with whomever they put in there, was three straight losses to start the 2013 season. They even lost the first game Bell played, Week 4 against the Vikings in London.
The team settled down to win eight of their final 12 games, and they tacked on 11 more wins in 2014, all with Bell healthy and productive.
He was injured in the second half of Week 17, didn't play in the team's wild card round loss to Baltimore, running the team's record to 0-4 without their featured runner.
The league will at least consider a suspension for Bell, and at most, will ban him for two games. A ruling given down from the courts recently gives NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell all he'd need to render a decision on his fate. It seems reasonable the Steelers would request notice of that ruling ahead of free agency so the team can properly prepare for another stint without Bell.
Decisions they'd make in free agency may affect the draft as well. Finding a running back who can come in to start two games may be difficult to do in the later rounds. Even with the assumed improvement of 2014 undrafted free agent Josh Harris, the team will have to bolster the depth of the position at least for training camp.
If Bell is absent two games this year, it will be a significant reduction for the Steelers' offense, and as we've seen lately, a lesser likelihood of winning. That suggests the need to bring in a veteran who's able and prepared to do his best Bell impression in one or two games, maybe more, in 2015.

I wouldn't be to upset if we took another dip into the mich. st. pool as we did for bell. Langford in the 4th could be a solid pick I think.

Any Rb must be able to accept that he will not be running the ball/playing a whole lot. Must be able to catch passes and most important must be able to pass protect. I hope we go thru FA or late rounds for this pick.
