Do people really care that he went to Temple?

Guys like Matakevich make it on the team for reasons. Reasons that may not be clear to you. I doubt it's because he is a fan favorite.

serious question because I don't know.

Yeah, he's been super on STs. Until someone is better he has that particular spot as he should.
Some players are only ST beast and nothing else but they're needed.

I don't care if the player went to BFE university as long as he can play football.
Dirty Red maybe on the outside looking in. Crowded ILB corp that could be cheaper than Dirty Red.

Nah, your just making things up here. Most of us don’t care where he went to school. If it’s not Pitt or Penn State it’s irrelevant. And for either half that went to Pitt or Penn State, the other half is irrelevant. ;)

Edit, other than James Conner, Pitt is irrelevant. Go PSU.

I’m a Dirty Red fan...... I could care less where he played his college ball but am very glad he’s a Steeler.

Red is extremely football smart. His pre-snap reads and in play diagnosis is his strength and he’s a technically sound tackler. If he had Shazier or Bush’s or even Gilbert’s athleticism he would be a first ballot HOFer but he doesn’t . He is a liability in coverage. But if you put him in a 4-3 Base and made him the “Mike”( Not Tampa 2) he would flourish.

All that said he is the Best STer we have and you DONT improve a Unit by removing its best part but instead replace the liabilities first. If he gets defensive snaps it HAS to be as a “Buck” in run support and there he will not only hold his own but play well.

Please provide evidence of his football intelligence, including his pre-snap reads and in-play diagnosis.

Also, please provide evidence that he is the Steelers' best special teams player.

    Thank you.

The only thing that was made up about him was the bit about people liking him because he went to Temple. I'm as big a critic of Matakevich as anybody on this site and I was the first one to question that assertion.

Yes, thats what I was referring too. I don't have much thoughts about him one way or the other. He's depth.

I imagine that he appeals to fans because he fits the blue collar mold but it has nothing to do with where he played.

Same guy who argued that Bostic would be cut during training camp last year and Matakevich would win the starting job. Pure nonsense.

I thought that was him. That Bostic was a huge disappointment and Matakevich still ended up starting only one game all season, in place of Williams, should have told him something, but clearly it didn't sink in.

The problem with that is under the Tomlin regime it's hard to know if it's a player's limitation that keeps them from getting more playing time or Tomlin's reluctance to change something purely based on how he feels.

That isn't to say it is happening in this case but the pattern has repeated it's self time and time again during his tenure.

Also complicating things are media printing things that might not necessarily be true such as so and so player didn't practice well that's why they didn't get more snaps.

We are cool, but just like the Steelers I am going to defend my home town team to the max.
I am happy for PSU when they win. but there not in the same league as Pitt when producing SUPERSTARS. never have never will be. Hail to PITT.

Good morning. 8 HOF vs 6. That’s not exactly a different league? And it has been a very long time since Pitt has been at the same level as Penn State. But, I will root for Pitt as long as they aren’t playing the mighty Lions. We Are.

The Steelers have been hurting at inside linebacker since Shazier's injury, yet Matakevich has one start in that time. The signed a guy off the street and made him a starter by the time the playoffs started that year. I get the doubts about Tomlin and Butler, but I think you're stretching it a bit far in this case.

Our GM was pushing the narrative of Matakevich as late as last year. Does anyone find that troubling?
