The bigger issue here is they don’t have revenue sharing in the MLB so small market teams will never be able to compete with larger market teams like the Yankees or Red Sox. Every once in awhile a small market team will be competitive but over the long haul they generally take a back seat to the big market teams. It really hurts the league overall but when the league is essentially operated by and caters to teams like the Yankees you won’t see any changes. As a result you are right Skenes will be here for a few years then the Pirates will trade him to somebody like the Yankees. We are essentially a farm team for the big market teams.

I think the Miami Marlins were the last low payroll team to have a miracle. I'd be lying if I didn't say it is at the back of my mind.

MLB does revenue sharing somewhat. Teams have to throw in 50 % of their income to share among all 30 teams.

It really is a shame. Great way to destroy a sport. Its a big reason why the MLB will always take a backseat to the NFL. Greed always ruins everything,,, in this case its the greed of the big market owners. The other thing is the MLB is oversaturated in that they have so many games and the season is so long that not every game matters. It really devalues the intensity of watching a single game. That is something the NLF has always had over all of these other major professional sports leagues, however the NFL is now becoming so greedy they want to extend the season. Its going to get to a point where they will be in the same boat of not every game mattering much and in particular now having games on Sundays, Saturdays, Thursdays and Mondays at a certain point you devalue the product. They are going to further devalue the quality of the product as more and more players get hurt with an extended season you barely recognize the team at the end of the year compared to the beginning of the year with the quality of the play severly lacking. Then what does the NFL do to compensate for this.... they try to legislate injuries out of the game further ruining the quality of play and the game. You go back and look at some 70’s and 80’s NFL football even into the early 2000’s and the quality of play, hits, tackles etc. is significantly better than todays NFL. Its getting to the point I feel like we are watching a fast break in basketball anymore.

Thats why all the money is put into QB’s, WR’s, LT’s and Edge players now its all about the pass. I like the fact the Steelers are zigging while everyone else is zagging. Build up a powerful run game because nobody is designed to stop the run anymore and alot of these guys aren’t even really proficient at tackling anymore. Those players are cheaper to come bye too to build up your teams meaning, RB’s, guards, centers etc.

Reed was a Free Safety, His job was to cover. And he was great at it.

Troy was a Strong Safety. He could stop the run, blitz, cover and make plays that were jaw dropping. LeBeau gave him free rein.

He was a special once in a lifetime talent. Reed was not.

Nobody would argue Ed wasn't great. But Troy was something special. Like Barry sanders we will probably never see another player like him doing all the crazy things he did and being the ultimate game disruptor.

On a side note he's also the only player to ever stop a player from scoring on a 100% effective play. Just ask Pat McAfee

Not the same. It still provides a massive advantage to the big market teams. Do they have a salary cap in mlb?

Tough to ask me as a Steelers fan.

Now, I know how great Reed was at what he was assigned to do and he has stats to back it up. Troy too.

But it’s unfair because I/we likely watched much more of our guy.

Did they both have major affect on how offenses played = yes.

Were they both game wreckers = yes.

But I personally remember waaaay more actual all time highlight worthy plays that will be played over and over of Troy than Reed.

    Troy
    Spectacular interceptions - Check
    Spectacular returns - Check
    Spectacular tackles - Check
    Game Winning plays - Check

    Reed
    - Spectacular interceptions - I’m sure but cannot recall one.
    - Spectacular returns - I’m sure but cannot recall one.
    - Spectacular tackles - Not that I remember.
    - Game Winning plays - I’m sure but cannot recall one.

Ravens fans might have completely different answers on their recollections of Ed Reed. But I bet they know most of Troy’s most spectacular highlights of lots of types of football plays.

I'm not talking about MLB. I'm talking about the owners of the Pittsburgh Pirates. If an owner of a small market team is the richest man in the world, that small market team is allowed to spend 500 million dollars to buy the best team. Robert Nutting is making good money on the 48% pool all teams put into. Pirates payroll under 100 million because Bob does not play for the best players but he could if he desired to but Bobby boy is a businessman not a baseball man.

I’ll take your word for it. I don’t know much about the MLB. As long as people keep going to the games he will keep being cheap. I don’t know how much they make in tv revenue or merchandise but if the stadium is full I guess it doesn’t really matter to the owner.

First of all, a lot of you guys get it, they were different positions. If Troy had been a FS who spent less time up closer, I'm sure he would have had a lot more interceptions than he had. Likewise, I don't expect Reed to have as many highlights at the line of scrimmage.

Not that I watch a lot of him, but one that stands out to me as a massive difference between Reed and Troy is Santonio Holmes' touchdown in the AFCCG. The 65 yarder. It takes Holmes about 10 seconds to get to the end zone from the time he catches the ball, and in all that time, Ed Reed doesn't make a move to get him. He plays it "safe" by running backwards for a while, even though he had ample opportunity to get by Nate Washington, who wasn't even looking. Then he straight up runs away when he sees Heath Miller coming. I mean literally, he changes directions so hard that he takes himself out of the play. Don't get me wrong, I might do that too, but I'm not in the NFL and calling myself the greatest. Then, only when he's removed himself completely from the play, he makes a half-assed attempt to get Holmes, who makes it to the end zone easily.

I know Reed laid some big hits, but that's different from being a consistently physical player.

It's only one play and I haven't done more research, but can anyone imagine Troy just escorting a receiver into the end zone without ever making a move, so he wouldn't get hit?? And in the game that takes you to the Super Bowl??

Reed like Dion Sanders get all the love because of the interceptions and splash plays. It’s unfortunate people don’t value tackling and sound football at the same level as some of the other stuff. Like you said they played very different positions. In my mind Troy was a more dynamic player that impacted the game alot more. Troy also had some amazing game changing plays against the Ravens. I can’t remember Reed having much of an impact against us. Bottom line I would choose Troy 10 out of 10 times over Reed to be in the Steelers.

The best way to truly evaluate Ed Reed is to look at a Minkah last year. Minkah is a Free Safety as was Ed Reed. We essentially asked Minkah to play all over the place last year and in particular string safety or more in the box to make up for the injuries in the ILB room.

Minkah wasn’t the same player. His impact and splash plays were way down and his body did not hold up to the pounding of playing in the box. I think if you would have asked Ex Reed to play SS you would have had a similar situation as Minkah last year.

On the flip side if you were to ask Troy to play FS I think he would have performed remarkably well. It just goes to show you how remarkable of an athelete Troy was. He was fast enough to cover the whole backend of the field and physical enough and strong enough to consistently play in the box.

For that I definitely feel like he was the better Safety of the two.
