And to be quite honest, I'm not so sure Tomlin doesn't give Troy a pass in training camp as well. It just seems he has a lot of "days off" during the summer. Just a theory but this guy hasn't been completely healthy in over two years. :hmmm:

I don't think that's it at all. I think his body is just wearing down from his all-out effort at everything he does, and he has just reached his internal clock for recovery. Same thing happend to Bob Sanders, a similar style and size player who faded out once he hit his 30's.

Aaron Smith would never leave the facility, took part in all the supervised S&C programs, and still ended up the same way as Troy - a part-time player for his last 4 seasons as his body just couldn't handle the stress anymore.

The only thing that could help these guys, steroids, would be 100% shunned by both as they both are model citizens and wouldn't even consider putting that crap into their system. Every body responds differently to stress, which is why guys like Ray Lewis, Hines Ward, and Donald Driver can play well into their late 30's at a high level injury-free, while guys like Sanders, Polamalu and Smith fade away. Genetics is a HUGE factor in all this stuff.

Garret Giedmont couldnt help Troy any more or less than Mr. Marinovich could.

It's time for Troy to focus solely on his acting career, he'd be head and shoulders above where he's at on the football field the last couple seasons...

He's looked like a slow, midget linebacker the last couple of years, not the athletic and dynamic playmaker we all grew to love his first few years in the league.

Troy is done. He isn't what he used to be and now he can't even stay on the field.

I agree that Troy should retire after this season. My question is, who ya gonna get to replace him. You can't just advocate dumping a future HOF player and claim that anyone would be better.

Troy could help this team by helping coach others. He will likely never heal to 100% from here on out. It will be 1 week on the field followed by 2-3 weeks off.
The guys filling in for him are doing an adequate job but will never be Troy. Not sure anyone would be. Obviously our philosophy on LB's works. We need to adopt the same mentality at other tough positions.
The speed of these younger receivers and our CB's inability or lack of jamming them hard off the line leads to a foot race with a number of jump balls.
Backs at 5' 10" just do not seem to fit in this scheme any longer healthy or not.

Agreed. That Marv Marinovich kinetic workout stuff doesn't seem to be working very well.

Obviously, noone. The question remains, Who are you going to replace him with? You? Bobby Biz? Some mystery free agent? If it's going to be through the draft, wait until after the season before you run him out of town like a common pygmy.

I never said to run him out of town in the middle of the season.

No one is going to "replace" Troy, the guy was a freak of nature. We'll end up being a more conventional secondary with whoever we end up getting.

    Mundy aint it

I agree. No one is this thread is advocating running him out of town mid season. I even said so in an earlier post. But he seems to be focused on who is going to replace him to the point that its almost hi-jacked the thread.

The facts are that no one knows 4 games into this season who will be available in FA or the draft at the end of this season. But that shouldn't stop the discussion about TPs future with this team given his cap price ($10M/yr) and his declining skills and injury liability. Its a valid and legitimate discussion.

And even if you want to entertain his question, the answer really is ANYONE. Even the much maligned Ryan Mundy is a better option than TP who has become completely unreliable at this point.

Can we take Mundy's calf and give it to Troy?

    I agree.

Its highly unlikely that you'll find an exact replacement for him. But there are surely going to be options out there.

And I think we could also be having this discussion about Harrison too. Time will tell, but he's also getting older with nagging injuries and a high cap number. Hopefully his injuries are past him and he can give a few more years at a high level. With Troy though, Im really starting to think that that is not the case.

I really do think that it's time that we start to expect to have to do it without Troy. If the injuries were just this year, I wouldn't feel this way, but he has missed way too much time over the past SEVERAL years due to injury. Today, it seemed like the defense was prepared for it - and I think that's what LeBeau is going to have to do from now on. Prepare as if he won't be ready, and be happy if he is. I would much rather have a secondary that has practiced and game-planned for a team that does not have Troy in the lineup than to try to do the same things they do WITH him.

Troy is probably one of my favorite Steelers. He's a good citizen and seems to put the team ahead of himself. He has good perspective. However, I do not like it that when he does step into a game, there's a good chance he won't make it through.

I have always had Troy`s back, in these discussions...
Sadly, I think the day might have finally come, when it`s time for him to hang it up.
Can`t do that mid-season, but, I think he has just finally sacrificed his body, to the point where he has nothing left to sacrifice.
What I am wondering, is, could Dick LeBeau, maybe design a better defense, if he isn`t constantly counting on Troy to come back?
If he finally admits, that Troy is done, can he just move on, and find a way to stop the offense, without Troy?
    Here`s hoping!
